Genesis 49:15 — English Explanation
Genesis 49:15 presents an interesting picture of Issachar. The verse contains both positive and challenging ideas. It speaks about recognizing good things—rest and pleasant land—while also describing the willingness to carry a burden and become subject to tribute.
“And he saw that rest was good”
The first part of the verse says that Issachar saw that rest was good. Rest here can communicate the idea of a peaceful, settled, and comfortable condition. It suggests an appreciation for security and relief from hardship.
Rest is not presented as something inherently wrong. Throughout Scripture, rest can be a good and valuable gift. God Himself established patterns of work and rest, showing that human beings need appropriate periods of recovery and peace.
In the context of Issachar, however, this appreciation for rest may also indicate a preference for a peaceful and settled life rather than a life characterized by constant struggle or warfare.
The lesson can be applied more broadly: people naturally value peace, stability, comfort, and a secure place to live. These things can be blessings, but the desire for comfort must be balanced with responsibility.
“And the land that it was pleasant”
The verse next says that Issachar saw the land as pleasant. This indicates that the physical land associated with his inheritance was attractive, productive, or desirable.
The idea of pleasant land can include fertile soil, favorable surroundings, and a comfortable environment. A good land provides opportunities for agriculture, settlement, and prosperity.
Issachar therefore recognized the value of what was before him. He understood that the land was worth having and that a settled existence could bring benefits.
This part of the verse also reminds readers that material blessings are not automatically wrong. Good land, food, shelter, peaceful surroundings, and productive work can all be valuable gifts. The important question is how a person responds to those blessings.
“And bowed his shoulder to bear”
The wording then changes from comfort to burden-bearing.
To “bow his shoulder” is a picture of someone placing a load upon his shoulders and accepting the responsibility of carrying it. The expression communicates submission, labor, and willingness to bear a burden.
This does not necessarily mean that Issachar was weak. Rather, it describes a people who accepted a demanding responsibility. The image is similar to an animal being placed under a load: the shoulder is lowered so that the burden can be carried.
There is an important lesson here. A pleasant situation does not eliminate responsibility. Even when life provides peaceful circumstances, people still have duties that must be carried.
A person may enjoy rest, a good home, productive land, or financial stability, but these blessings can also bring responsibilities. True maturity involves being willing to carry legitimate responsibilities rather than seeking comfort without effort.
“And became a servant unto tribute”
The final phrase says that Issachar “became a servant unto tribute.”
In the language of the KJV, “tribute” can refer to a burden, forced labor, or an obligation imposed upon someone. The phrase therefore suggests subjection to labor or tribute.
This gives the verse a more serious dimension. Issachar’s desire for a peaceful and pleasant existence was connected with accepting a position involving labor and obligation.
The passage can be understood as a warning about the price of comfort. Sometimes people may accept burdens or restrictions because they value security and peaceful circumstances more than independence.
At the same time, the verse should not be reduced to the idea that every form of service is negative. Scripture frequently presents faithful service and responsible labor as honorable. The concern here is the particular condition of becoming subject to tribute or forced obligation.
The Main Spiritual Lesson
Genesis 49:15 can therefore be understood as a picture of comfort, responsibility, labor, and submission.
Issachar saw that rest was good. He recognized that the land was pleasant. But enjoying those benefits involved carrying a burden.
The verse encourages readers to think carefully about the relationship between comfort and responsibility. A comfortable life can be a blessing, but the pursuit of comfort should never become so important that a person willingly sacrifices truth, freedom, responsibility, or faithfulness merely to remain comfortable.
There is also a positive lesson about work. Life requires people to carry responsibilities. Families, communities, occupations, and spiritual commitments all involve duties. A person should not expect every blessing to come without effort.
Genesis 49:15 ultimately invites reflection on the choices people make when they are given an opportunity for peace and prosperity. It asks us, in effect, whether we are using our blessings responsibly or allowing our love of comfort to determine our priorities.
Genesis 49:15 (KJV)
“And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.”
“And he saw that rest was good” — “اس نے دیکھا کہ آرام اچھا ہے”
“And the land that it was pleasant” — “اور زمین کہ وہ خوشگوار تھی”
“And bowed his shoulder to bear” — “اور اس نے اپنا کندھا بوجھ اٹھانے کے لیے جھکا دیا”
“And became a servant unto tribute” — “اور خراج کے لیے خدمت گار بن گیا”
