English Explanation

Genesis 49 records one of the most significant moments in the life of Jacob, also called Israel. Near the end of his life, Jacob gathered his twelve sons and spoke to them individually. His words were not merely ordinary farewell statements. They described important aspects of their future and, consequently, the future of the tribes that would come from them.

The opening words of Genesis 49:28 say, “All these are the twelve tribes of Israel.” This identifies Jacob’s twelve sons with the twelve tribal families that would form the nation of Israel. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin were the sons through whom the tribal identity of Israel developed.

The verse then says, “this is it that their father spake unto them.” The statement points back to the preceding section of Genesis 49, where Jacob had spoken to each son separately. His words covered different subjects. Some sons received words concerning strength and prosperity, while others received correction or predictions about difficulties.

This is important because the word “blessed” in this passage should not necessarily be understood as meaning that every statement Jacob made was a simple prediction of comfort or material prosperity. Jacob’s blessing involved declaring the future and speaking significant words over each son. Some statements contained encouragement, while others revealed consequences connected with past conduct.

For example, Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn, but his earlier misconduct affected the position he would occupy. Simeon and Levi were also confronted with the consequences of their violent actions. Judah, by contrast, received a particularly significant declaration concerning leadership. Joseph received an extensive description of fruitfulness and prosperity, while Benjamin was compared to a ravenous wolf. Genesis 49 therefore shows that Jacob’s blessing was individual and specific, not identical for every son.

The final phrase is especially meaningful: “every one according to his blessing he blessed them.” In other translations, this idea is expressed as blessing each son with the blessing “appropriate to him” or “suitable to him.”

This teaches an important spiritual principle: God’s purposes are not identical for every person. Different people may receive different responsibilities, opportunities, abilities, and forms of service. One person’s calling should not become the standard by which another person’s life is judged.

Jacob’s words also demonstrate that family history matters, but it does not operate independently of God’s sovereign purposes. The sons had different personalities and different histories. Their actions had consequences, yet God continued His covenant purposes through the family of Jacob.

Another important feature of this verse is its connection with the covenant promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The twelve sons were not merely twelve individuals; they were the beginning of a people through whom the promises concerning Israel would continue. The verse therefore connects Jacob’s final words with the larger biblical story.

Main Lessons from Genesis 49:28

  • God sees individuals personally. Jacob addressed each son according to his particular situation.
  • Blessing does not always look identical. Different people can have different responsibilities and purposes.
  • Character matters. The history and actions of Jacob’s sons were reflected in the words spoken over them.
  • Words can carry lasting significance. Jacob’s final words concerned not only his sons but also the tribes that would come from them.
  • God’s covenant purposes continue across generations. The twelve sons became the foundation of the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • Correction can exist alongside blessing. A biblical blessing is not necessarily a promise that there will never be difficulty.
  • God’s purposes are larger than one generation. Jacob was thinking beyond his own lifetime toward the future of his descendants.

The verse therefore serves as a summary of Jacob’s final prophetic blessing. It reminds readers that the twelve sons had different stories, different characteristics, and different futures, yet together they formed the twelve tribes of Israel.

“All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.”

“All these are the twelve tribes of Israel”

“every one according to his blessing he blessed them.”
