English Explanation

This verse comes from the closing chapter of Genesis and describes the burial of Jacob, also called Israel. After Jacob died in Egypt, his sons carried his body back to the land of Canaan, according to his earlier request. His burial was not merely a family ceremony; it was deeply connected with God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their descendants.

Jacob had lived for many years in Egypt, where Joseph had risen to a position of great authority. Egypt had provided a place of safety and preservation for Jacob’s family during the famine. Yet Jacob did not want Egypt to become his final resting place. Before his death, he made Joseph promise that he would be buried with his fathers in Canaan. Genesis 49 records Jacob’s instructions concerning the burial place.

The phrase “his sons carried him into the land of Canaan” emphasizes that Jacob’s sons honored their father’s final command. The journey from Egypt to Canaan was significant because Canaan was the land associated with God’s covenant promises. Jacob’s family had temporarily settled in Egypt, but their ancestral burial place remained in Canaan.

The verse then identifies the exact place of burial: “the cave of the field of Machpelah.” This was the family burial site purchased by Abraham. The passage carefully records its history so that the reader understands that this was not an ordinary burial ground. Abraham had acquired the field and cave from Ephron the Hittite, in the presence of the people of the land, with Mamre nearby.

The burial place had already become associated with several generations of the patriarchal family. Abraham and Sarah were buried there, and Isaac and Rebekah were also connected with this family burial site. Leah, Jacob’s wife, was buried there as well. By being buried in Machpelah, Jacob was placed alongside the people from whom the covenant family had descended.

The detail concerning Abraham’s purchase is especially important. Genesis repeatedly emphasizes that Abraham legally acquired the field and cave. This demonstrates that the burial place was a recognized possession rather than merely land temporarily occupied by the family. The location therefore became a tangible reminder of the family’s connection to Canaan.

There is also an important spiritual theme in this verse: faith in God’s promises can continue beyond one’s lifetime. Jacob died in Egypt, but his final request pointed toward Canaan. His burial expressed confidence that God’s purposes concerning the promised land would not disappear simply because the family was temporarily living outside it.

The verse also teaches the importance of honoring parents. Jacob’s sons did not disregard his wishes after his death. They made the considerable journey from Egypt to Canaan and carried out his instructions. Their actions demonstrate respect, family responsibility, and faithfulness.

Another significant lesson is that Scripture pays attention to historical and geographical details. Names such as Machpelah, Ephron, and Mamre are included because the biblical account connects spiritual promises with real people and places. The passage therefore presents Jacob’s burial as a genuine historical event within the continuing story of the patriarchs.

Finally, Genesis 50:13 stands near the conclusion of Genesis. The book began with God’s creation of the world and continued through the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Jacob’s burial brings the patriarchal story toward its conclusion while simultaneously pointing forward. God’s covenant promises were larger than any individual patriarch’s lifetime. Jacob died, but God’s purposes continued through his descendants.

“For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah…”
