Detailed English Explanation & Theological Commentary
1. Introduction and Contextual Background
The Epistle of James offers some of the most practical and ethical teachings in the New Testament. In James Chapter 2, the apostle addresses a serious issue within the early Christian community: partiality and favoritism. Believers were giving honor and preferential seating to wealthy individuals while ignoring or scorning the poor.
In response to this spiritual moral inconsistency, James presents verse 8 as a golden standard of Christian conduct. He refers to the commandment to “love thy neighbour as thyself” as the “Royal Law” (nomos basilikos in Greek). By invoking this law, James makes it clear that true faith cannot coexist with prejudice, partiality, or social division.
2. Why is it Called the “Royal Law”?
James specifically chooses the adjective “royal” (kingly) to describe this commandment for several key reasons:
-
Decreed by the King of Kings: This commandment originates directly from God, the Supreme Sovereign of heaven and earth. When God gave the law in Leviticus 19:18 and when Christ reaffirmed it in Matthew 22:37–40, it carried the full weight of divine authority.
-
The Sovereign Rule Over All Relationships: Among all ethical laws governing human interactions, this law reigns supreme. It serves as the overarching principle under which all other moral guidelines operate.
-
The Law of the Kingdom of God: Those who belong to the Kingdom of God are governed by the law of love. To live as a royal citizen of God’s Kingdom is to act with unconditional love toward all human beings.
3. “According to the Scripture”: Old Testament Roots and New Covenant Fulfillment
When James cites “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself,” he is quoting directly from Leviticus 19:18 in the Old Testament Scriptures. Jesus Christ famously declared this command as the second greatest commandment, equal in importance to loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:36–40, Mark 12:31).
The Apostle Paul reinforced this same truth in Romans 13:9–10, writing that love is the fulfillment of the entire law. Loving one’s neighbor naturally prevents a person from committing adultery, murder, theft, lying, or covetousness. Thus, James reminds his readers that this command is anchored firmly throughout all of God’s inspired Scripture.
4. Defining “Neighbour” and “Self-Love”
To fully obey this commandment, two crucial concepts must be understood:
-
Who is my neighbour?
In Christ’s parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), Jesus broadened the definition of “neighbour” beyond immediate family, friends, or fellow countrymen. A neighbor is anyone in need with whom we come into contact, regardless of their social status, wealth, ethnicity, or background.
-
What does it mean to love as “thyself”?
Human beings naturally seek their own well-being, safety, comfort, and respect. Loving your neighbor as yourself means extending that same care, respect, protection, and kindness to others. It is an active, practical commitment to seek the ultimate good of others just as naturally as we seek our own.
5. Practical Application: Faith in Action
When James says “ye do well,” he commends those who genuinely practice this command. However, the immediate surrounding text (James 2:9) warns: “But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin”.
This teaching challenges believers in daily life to:
-
Eliminate Discrimination: Reject discrimination based on economic status, race, social standing, or outward appearance.
-
Practice Active Charity: Fulfill practical needs—feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, and helping the suffering—rather than offering empty words (James 2:15–17).
-
Reflect God’s Character: Act as living examples of God’s unmerited grace, mercy, and impartial love toward all humanity.

(Background and Context)
(Why it is called the Royal Law)
(According to the Scripture)
(Practical Application)
