English Explanation

1. “I went down to the bottoms of the mountains”

Jonah begins by describing how far down he had gone. After being thrown into the sea, he sank into the depths. The expression “bottoms of the mountains” gives a picture of the deep foundations beneath the sea.

Jonah was not simply experiencing an ordinary difficulty. He believed he had reached a place where human strength could do nothing. The sea surrounded him, the waters overwhelmed him, and escape appeared impossible.

The language also reflects Jonah’s spiritual and emotional condition. He had run away from God’s command, traveled in the opposite direction, and eventually found himself in a situation completely beyond his control.

Sometimes a person’s circumstances can feel like Jonah’s experience. Problems may seem to become deeper and deeper. One difficulty can lead to another until there appears to be no way forward. Jonah’s prayer reminds us that reaching a low place does not mean that God has stopped working.

2. “The earth with her bars was about me for ever”

The word picture becomes even stronger here. Jonah describes the earth as though it had bars around him, like the bars of a prison.

A prison with locked doors represents something from which a person cannot escape through his own power. Jonah felt trapped. The sea had become his prison, and death appeared to be his destination.

The phrase “for ever” expresses the hopelessness Jonah felt at that moment. From his human perspective, there seemed to be no future. He could not see how his circumstances could change.

Yet this was not the end of Jonah’s story.

This is an important lesson in the verse: what looks like the end from a human perspective may not be the end of God’s work.

Jonah could not break the bars surrounding him. He could not swim to safety. He could not save himself. His deliverance had to come from God.

3. “Yet hast thou brought up my life”

The word “yet” marks the great turning point of the verse.

Jonah had gone down, but God brought him up.

Jonah had been surrounded by the sea, but God provided a means of preservation.

Jonah believed he was moving toward death, but God brought his life back.

This contrast is central to Jonah’s prayer. His circumstances were terrible, but God’s power was greater than his circumstances.

The phrase “thou hast brought up” gives God the credit for Jonah’s deliverance. Jonah does not claim that he rescued himself. He recognizes that God acted on his behalf.

This is one of the strongest themes in Jonah 2: God is able to rescue a person from circumstances that seem completely beyond human control.

4. “From corruption”

The word “corruption” can carry the idea of the pit, destruction, decay, or the grave. Jonah believed that he was near death, but God preserved him.

The great fish itself was an extraordinary means of preservation. Although Jonah was inside the fish, he was alive. What might have appeared to be another frightening part of his experience was actually connected to God’s deliverance.

Jonah’s story teaches that God’s methods of rescue may not always look the way people expect. Jonah probably would not have chosen to be swallowed by a great fish, but God used that situation to preserve his life.

Sometimes deliverance does not immediately look comfortable. God’s work may begin in circumstances that seem frightening, confusing, or difficult to understand.

5. “O LORD my God”

Jonah ends this statement by addressing God personally: “O LORD my God.”

This is significant because Jonah is not speaking about a distant or unknown God. He is calling upon the God whom he knows.

His prayer demonstrates renewed recognition of God’s authority and mercy. Earlier in the book, Jonah attempted to flee from God’s command. Now, from the depths, Jonah is turning his attention toward God.

The phrase also expresses relationship. Jonah recognizes that God is the One who has authority over the sea, the earth, life, and deliverance.

Spiritual Lessons from Jonah 2:6

God can reach us in the deepest places

Jonah went down into the depths of the sea, but he was not beyond God’s reach. The verse reminds readers that physical circumstances cannot place someone outside God’s ability to act.

When life feels overwhelming, this passage offers a message of hope: the depth of the problem is not greater than God’s power.

God can bring hope into hopeless circumstances

Jonah saw himself surrounded by “bars.” He felt imprisoned and unable to escape. Nevertheless, God changed his situation.

This does not mean every difficult circumstance will immediately disappear. Rather, Jonah’s experience demonstrates that hopelessness is not necessarily the final chapter.

Deliverance belongs to God

Jonah’s words emphasize God’s action. “Thou hast brought up my life.”

The verse therefore encourages humility. When deliverance comes, Jonah recognizes its source. He does not boast about his own strength.

Difficult experiences can produce spiritual reflection

Jonah’s prayer came during one of the darkest moments of his life. His circumstances forced him to reflect on God, his actions, and his need for mercy.

Trials can become occasions for serious reflection. They can cause people to recognize their dependence upon God and reconsider the direction of their lives.
