Jude 1:6 Explanation (English)

Jude 1:6 is one of the most powerful verses in the New Testament concerning God’s justice, the accountability of spiritual beings, and the certainty of divine judgment. The Apostle Jude reminds believers that even angels, who were created with great honor and authority, were not exempt from God’s judgment when they chose rebellion over obedience. This verse serves as both a warning and an encouragement. It warns against pride and disobedience while assuring believers that God is perfectly just and will ultimately judge all evil.

The verse begins with the words, “And the angels which kept not their first estate.” The phrase “first estate” refers to the original position, authority, or condition that God gave to these angels. They were created as holy beings to serve God faithfully. Instead of remaining in the place God assigned to them, they chose rebellion. Scripture indicates that these angels abandoned the purpose for which they were created. Rather than honoring God, they rejected His authority.

The next phrase, “but left their own habitation,” emphasizes that these angels willingly departed from the place God had prepared for them. Their rebellion was not accidental or forced upon them. It was a deliberate decision to reject God’s order. Throughout the Bible, obedience to God brings blessing, while rebellion brings judgment. These angels became an example of the serious consequences of abandoning God’s will.

Jude then declares that God “hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness.” This vivid picture symbolizes divine restraint and judgment. The “everlasting chains” do not necessarily describe physical chains like those used on earth but represent God’s complete authority over these fallen angels. They cannot escape His judgment or overturn His decision. The expression “under darkness” portrays separation from God’s glorious presence and the condition of awaiting final judgment.

The final phrase, “unto the judgment of the great day,” points toward the future day when God will judge all evil completely and perfectly. Although these rebellious angels have already experienced punishment, a final judgment still awaits them. This demonstrates that God’s justice operates both in the present and in the future. No act of rebellion against God remains unnoticed or unaccounted for.

This verse also reminds believers that privilege does not guarantee security apart from faithful obedience. The angels possessed immense power and heavenly status, yet they fell because of their rebellion. Likewise, every person is called to remain faithful to God rather than relying on personal achievements, knowledge, or position.

Jude places this example alongside other examples of divine judgment in his letter. His purpose is to encourage believers to remain steadfast in the truth while exposing false teachers who were leading people away from God’s Word. Just as God judged rebellious angels, He will also judge every form of persistent evil and deception.

For Christians today, Jude 1:6 teaches several practical lessons:

  • God is completely holy and just.
  • Rebellion against God has serious consequences.
  • Spiritual privilege should never produce pride.
  • God’s judgment is certain and cannot be escaped.
  • Believers should remain faithful to God’s truth and calling.

This verse should not merely create fear but inspire reverence for God. His justice is balanced by His mercy, demonstrated throughout Scripture for those who sincerely repent and place their faith in Him. Jude’s warning encourages believers to live lives marked by humility, obedience, and faithfulness.

Ultimately, Jude 1:6 reveals that God’s authority extends over both heaven and earth. Nothing lies beyond His sovereign rule. Evil may appear to prosper for a time, but God’s final judgment is certain. This assurance gives believers confidence that righteousness will ultimately triumph because God remains the perfect Judge.

یُوداہ 1:6 کی تفصیلی تشریح (Urdu)
