English Explanation

Judges 21:20 is part of the closing events of the Book of Judges. The verse describes a specific instruction given to the remaining men of the tribe of Benjamin. The Israelites had previously fought a devastating civil conflict against Benjamin, and afterward they realized that the tribe was in danger of disappearing completely from Israel. The people therefore sought a way to provide wives for the surviving Benjamite men so that the tribe could continue.

The verse says, “And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.” The phrase “lie in wait” means to hide or remain concealed while waiting for an opportunity to act. In the immediate context, the Israelites had developed a plan connected with the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh. Young women would come out to participate in the celebration, and the Benjamite men were instructed to take wives from among them.

This passage must be understood within the difficult historical and moral circumstances of Judges 19–21. The events described here are not presented as a simple model for ordinary family life. Instead, they belong to a troubled period in Israel’s history when the nation was experiencing severe internal disorder.

The Background of Judges 21

The tribe of Benjamin had nearly been destroyed because of the conflict described in the final chapters of Judges. The Israelites had gathered together against Benjamin after a terrible crime committed at Gibeah. The resulting war caused enormous loss of life.

After the battle, the Israelites mourned because one of the tribes of Israel was close to disappearing. Judges 21:6 says that the children of Israel were grieved for Benjamin their brother. They did not want Benjamin to be completely removed from Israel.

However, the Israelites had previously made an oath that they would not give their daughters as wives to the men of Benjamin. This created a serious problem. Benjamin had surviving men, but there were not enough women among them to establish families and preserve the tribe.

The people therefore looked for another solution.

“Go and Lie in Wait”

The words “Go and lie in wait” describe the method they planned to use. The Benjamites were told to conceal themselves near the vineyards. The following verses explain that this was connected with the annual feast at Shiloh.

The plan was for the Benjamite men to take wives from among the young women who came out to participate in the celebration. In this way, the Israelites attempted to preserve the tribe of Benjamin without directly breaking the oath they had made.

The passage shows how complicated the situation had become. An earlier oath had created a problem, and the people attempted to solve that problem through another unusual arrangement.

The Importance of the Vineyard

The vineyard mentioned in this verse is significant because it provided a place where the Benjamite men could remain hidden. Vineyards were common agricultural areas in ancient Israel, and their vegetation could provide concealment.

The instruction was therefore practical within the plan being carried out. The men were told where to position themselves and what to do when the appropriate moment came.

The verse itself is short, but the surrounding passage gives it its meaning. Reading Judges 21:20 alone can make the instruction seem mysterious. Reading it together with verses 19–23 makes the purpose of the command much clearer.

The Larger Message of Judges 21

The final chapter of Judges repeatedly emphasizes the disorder of Israel during this period. The book ends with the famous statement:

“In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” — Judges 21:25

This closing statement helps readers understand the broader atmosphere of the book. Judges records a period in which Israel repeatedly struggled with disobedience, conflict, violence, and social disorder.

Therefore, Judges 21:20 should be approached as part of that historical narrative rather than as an isolated instruction to imitate.

At the same time, the chapter demonstrates that the Israelites recognized the importance of preserving Benjamin as one of the tribes of Israel. Although the tribe had suffered tremendous losses, they did not want it to disappear completely.

A Lesson About Consequences

One important lesson from this passage concerns the consequences of decisions. The Israelites had made an oath, but that oath later created a difficult situation. Their attempt to solve the problem required a complicated plan.

This reminds readers that decisions made during emotionally intense circumstances can have consequences that are difficult to manage later. Wisdom requires considering not only the immediate situation but also the possible effects of our choices.

A Lesson About Community

Judges 21 also reveals the importance of community. Benjamin had become separated from the other tribes because of the conflict, but the Israelites eventually became concerned about its survival.

The people recognized Benjamin as “their brother.” This language is important. Even after severe conflict, Benjamin was still part of the nation.

The chapter therefore contains a complicated picture of conflict, responsibility, restoration, and the preservation of a community.

“And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards.”

آیت میں “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards” کا مطلب ہے کہ بنیامین کے مرد انگور کے باغوں میں چھپ کر مناسب موقع کا انتظار کریں۔

“In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
