Genesis 4:23-24 introduces Lamech as a man who represents the growing violence of early human society. He is the first person in Scripture recorded as having two wives, and his words show a heart influenced by pride and revenge.

Lamech begins by calling his wives to listen carefully: “Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech.” This repeated command emphasizes that he wants his actions and words to be noticed. He is not quietly confessing a mistake; rather, he is making a declaration of his power and reputation.

The phrase “I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt” indicates that Lamech killed someone who had injured him. The exact circumstances are not explained in the passage, but the important point is Lamech’s response. Instead of seeking justice or showing humility, he celebrates his violent action.

The reference to Cain is significant. Earlier in Genesis, Cain killed his brother Abel and was marked by God after committing the first recorded murder. God showed mercy by protecting Cain from being killed in revenge. Cain’s punishment was serious, but God prevented uncontrolled human vengeance.

Lamech takes the idea of Cain’s protection and twists it into a statement of superiority. He says, “If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.” His words show arrogance. He claims that anyone who harms him will face far greater revenge than anyone who threatened Cain.

Lamech lived in the early generations after Adam and Eve. The world was becoming increasingly affected by human wrongdoing. The descendants of Cain developed cities, tools, music, and other cultural achievements, but spiritual corruption also increased.

This passage shows that human progress in knowledge and civilization does not automatically produce moral goodness. People may develop skills and abilities while still struggling with anger, selfishness, and violence.

Lamech’s speech is also important because it shows the development of a culture of revenge. Instead of recognizing life as valuable and seeking justice, he celebrates his ability to harm others. His attitude becomes an example of how sin can influence human thinking.
