English Explanation

This passage comes from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 2, during the visit of the wise men who came seeking the newborn King of the Jews. When the wise men arrived in Jerusalem, they asked where the child who had been born as King of the Jews could be found. King Herod and the religious leaders gathered to discover the location of the promised Messiah. The chief priests and scribes answered that the child would be born in Bethlehem of Judaea because this was written by the prophet.

The place mentioned in this verse, Bethlehem, carries deep historical and spiritual importance. Bethlehem was a small town in the region of Judaea, but God had chosen it as the birthplace of the promised ruler. The prophecy referred to the words spoken through the prophet Micah many years earlier. Although Bethlehem appeared insignificant compared with larger cities, it became honored because of the great event that would take place there.

The statement “for thus it is written by the prophet” shows the connection between the promises of the earlier Scriptures and their fulfillment in the life of Jesus. Matthew emphasizes that the birth of Jesus was not an unexpected event but part of God’s plan revealed through prophecy. The location of His birth was significant because it demonstrated that God’s promises were being fulfilled exactly as foretold.

The phrase “And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda” teaches that human importance is not always measured by size, wealth, or reputation. Bethlehem was a small place, yet it became one of the most remembered towns in biblical history. A location that seemed ordinary became extraordinary because of God’s purpose.

The verse continues by saying, “for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.” This refers to the coming leader who would guide and shepherd God’s people. The description points toward Jesus as the promised Messiah, the one who came to bring spiritual leadership, hope, and salvation.

This passage also teaches the importance of trusting God’s promises. Generations had waited for the fulfillment of the prophecy, and the birth of Jesus showed that God’s timing and plans are reliable. The message encourages believers to remember that God can bring great purposes from humble beginnings.

Another important lesson is that God values obedience and faithfulness rather than worldly status. Bethlehem was not famous because of its power or influence; it became famous because it was chosen for a divine purpose. In the same way, individuals can have great value when they follow God’s plan and live according to His guidance.
