Revelation 1:1 — The Revelation of Jesus Christ

Bible Verse — Revelation 1:1

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.”
Revelation 1:1 (KJV)

Introduction

Revelation 1:1 is the opening verse of the Book of Revelation and introduces the central purpose, message, and divine source of the entire book. It tells us that the revelation ultimately comes from God, is given through Jesus Christ, communicated through His angel, and delivered to His servant John. The verse also explains why this message was given: so that God’s servants could know about things that must come to pass.

The opening words, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ,” are especially important. The word “revelation” means an unveiling, disclosure, or making something known that was previously hidden. The Book of Revelation therefore presents a message that God wanted to make known rather than something that John discovered through his own wisdom.

This verse establishes a clear chain of communication: God → Jesus Christ → His angel → John → God’s servants. The message is therefore presented as having a divine origin and a specific purpose.

Detailed Explanation of Revelation 1:1 — English

1. “The Revelation of Jesus Christ”

The verse begins with the words, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ.” This phrase can be understood in two closely related ways: it is a revelation concerning Jesus Christ, and it is a revelation communicated through Jesus Christ.

The Book of Revelation focuses strongly on Jesus. Throughout the book, Christ is presented as the victorious Lord, the Lamb, the King, and the One who ultimately triumphs over evil. The opening verse therefore immediately directs the reader’s attention to Him.

The word “revelation” comes from the idea of uncovering or making something visible. In biblical context, it refers to God making known truths that human beings could not discover by themselves.

This is important when reading Revelation because the book contains symbolic language, visions, angels, judgments, kingdoms, heavenly scenes, and prophetic events. The purpose of the book is not simply to create mystery or fear. Its purpose is to reveal God’s message and ultimately point believers toward the victory and authority of Jesus Christ.

2. “Which God gave unto him”

The next part says that this revelation was something “which God gave unto him.”

This shows that God is the ultimate source of the message. The revelation did not originate from John’s personal imagination. John received what was communicated to him.

The wording also shows the relationship between God and Jesus Christ in the communication of this revelation. The message proceeds from God and is given to Jesus Christ so that it can be communicated to His servants.

For Christians, this emphasizes that biblical prophecy should be approached with reverence. Revelation is not merely a collection of human predictions. The verse presents it as a message originating with God.

3. “To shew unto his servants”

God gave the revelation to Jesus Christ “to shew unto his servants.”

The purpose was to show or make known something to God’s servants. This is significant because the message was not given merely for curiosity. It was intended for people who belong to God and desire to understand His purposes.

The word “servants” also reminds readers that Christian faith involves both relationship and obedience. God’s people are called to listen to His message and faithfully follow Him.

Revelation is therefore not simply a book for predicting future events. It is also a call to faithfulness. As the book continues, believers are repeatedly encouraged to remain faithful even during difficult circumstances.

4. “Things which must shortly come to pass”

The verse then refers to “things which must shortly come to pass.”

This statement introduces the prophetic character of Revelation. John is going to receive visions concerning events connected with God’s purposes and the future.

The word “shortly” has generated considerable discussion among Bible readers. It can communicate the idea of events that are approaching or that will take place without unnecessary delay from the perspective of God’s prophetic plan. Different Christian traditions interpret the timing and fulfillment of Revelation differently.

It is therefore wise not to force every symbolic detail into a specific modern event without strong biblical evidence. Revelation should be interpreted carefully by considering its language, symbolism, historical setting, and the message of the entire Bible.

The central message is that history is not outside God’s control. The events described in Revelation ultimately move toward God’s purposes and the victory of Jesus Christ.

5. “And he sent and signified it by his angel”

The verse continues by saying that Christ “sent and signified it by his angel.”

The word “signified” is important. It carries the idea of communicating through signs or symbols. This helps explain why the Book of Revelation contains so many powerful images.

John sees things such as lamps, stars, seals, trumpets, beasts, crowns, a dragon, and other symbolic pictures. These images communicate spiritual and prophetic truths.

Because Revelation uses symbolism, readers should avoid assuming that every image is intended to be understood in a completely literal physical sense. The symbols must be examined within their biblical context.

The use of an angel also demonstrates another part of the communication process. God communicates His message through Jesus Christ, and the message is conveyed to John through an angel.

6. “Unto his servant John”

Finally, the verse identifies John as the recipient of the revelation.

John describes himself as Christ’s servant. This is a humble description. He does not present himself as the source of the message or as someone who possesses special authority because of his own wisdom. Instead, he identifies himself as a servant who received and recorded what was shown to him.

John’s role is important because the remainder of Revelation consists of the visions and messages he received.

This opening verse therefore prepares us to read the entire book as a prophetic message communicated to God’s people through a carefully described chain of revelation.

Main Lesson from Revelation 1:1

The most important lesson of Revelation 1:1 is that God is revealing His purposes through Jesus Christ for the benefit of His servants.

The verse encourages believers to approach Revelation with faith rather than speculation. Its message is ultimately centered on Jesus Christ and God’s sovereign purpose.

Revelation should not be read merely as a timetable of frightening future events. It is a message about God’s authority, Christ’s victory, the call to remain faithful, and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s purposes.

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.”

God → Jesus Christ → Angel → John → God’s servants

1. “The Revelation of Jesus Christ”

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ”

2. “Which God gave unto him”

“Which God gave unto him”

3. “To shew unto his servants”

4. “Things which must shortly come to pass”

“Things which must shortly come to pass”

5. “And he sent and signified it by his angel”

6. “Unto his servant John”

Revelation 1:1 introduces the entire Book of Revelation as a divine message from God, communicated through Jesus Christ and His angel to John for God’s servants.
