Revelation 12:4 Explanation in English
Revelation 12:4 presents one of the most striking symbolic scenes in the Book of Revelation. John sees a great dragon whose tail draws a third part of the stars of heaven and casts them to the earth. The dragon then stands before a woman who is about to give birth, waiting to devour her child immediately after the child is born. The verse communicates a powerful picture of spiritual opposition, evil, and the attempt to destroy God’s redemptive purpose.
The imagery in this verse should be understood within the larger vision of Revelation 12. John is not simply describing an ordinary physical dragon or an ordinary woman and child. Revelation frequently uses symbolic images to communicate spiritual and prophetic realities. Later in the chapter, the dragon is explicitly identified as “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan” (Revelation 12:9). Therefore, the dragon in verse 4 represents Satan and his opposition to God and His purposes.
The Meaning of the Dragon’s Tail
The verse says that the dragon’s tail “drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth.” This is highly symbolic language. The stars can represent heavenly beings, and many interpreters understand this imagery as referring to the rebellion and fall of angelic beings associated with Satan.
The expression “third part” emphasizes the great extent of the dragon’s destructive influence, while also showing that evil does not possess unlimited power. The dragon may cause tremendous damage, but God remains sovereign over His creation.
The imagery also reminds readers that spiritual rebellion is a serious reality. Scripture consistently presents Satan as an enemy who opposes God and seeks to deceive and destroy. Yet Satan is never presented as equal to God. God remains the supreme ruler, and the final victory belongs to Him.
The Dragon Stands Before the Woman
The second major image is the dragon standing before the woman who is ready to give birth.
The woman in Revelation 12 is a symbolic figure connected with God’s covenant people and the divine plan through which the Messiah comes into the world. The immediate context points toward the birth of the promised ruler, and the child is later described as the one “who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron.”
The dragon’s position is significant. He is not simply observing the birth. He is waiting to destroy the child. This portrays Satan’s opposition to God’s plan of salvation.
Throughout biblical history, evil repeatedly attempts to resist God’s purposes. When God works to fulfill His promises, opposition arises. The story of Scripture contains many examples of attempts to stop God’s purposes, but none of them can ultimately defeat Him.
“To Devour Her Child”
The phrase “to devour her child as soon as it was born” reveals the destructive intention of the dragon.
The child represents the Messiah, and the imagery points toward the conflict surrounding Christ. The Gospel accounts describe attempts to destroy Jesus shortly after His birth. Herod, for example, sought to kill the young child Jesus, resulting in the slaughter of children in Bethlehem. From the perspective of Revelation’s symbolic vision, this earthly hostility is connected with the larger spiritual conflict between Satan and God’s redemptive purpose.
The important message is that God’s plan cannot be destroyed by evil.
The dragon is powerful, but he is not victorious. The child survives the attempt, and Revelation continues toward the ultimate defeat of Satan. This gives believers confidence that God’s purposes remain secure even when evil appears powerful.
Spiritual Conflict Behind Human Events
Revelation 12:4 also teaches an important biblical principle: there can be a spiritual dimension behind visible earthly events.
Human beings may see political conflict, persecution, violence, deception, or hatred as isolated events. Revelation invites readers to recognize that the Bible describes a larger spiritual conflict between God’s kingdom and the forces of evil.
This does not mean that every difficult event should be assigned a specific spiritual explanation. Instead, the verse teaches that Christians should understand history within the larger reality of God’s sovereignty and Satan’s opposition.
The dragon wants to destroy what God is bringing forth, but the dragon cannot ultimately succeed.
God’s Sovereignty Over Evil
One of the most encouraging lessons from Revelation 12:4 is that evil has limits.
The dragon casts stars to the earth and waits to devour the child, but the narrative does not end with the dragon’s success. The following verses reveal that the child is caught up to God and His throne. The dragon’s intentions therefore fail.
This is an important theme throughout Revelation: evil may appear frightening, organized, and powerful, but it remains under God’s ultimate authority.
For Christians facing persecution, temptation, fear, or uncertainty, this message is deeply significant. The presence of opposition does not mean that God has lost control. God’s purposes continue even when circumstances seem to suggest otherwise.
A Lesson About Christ’s Victory
Revelation 12 ultimately directs attention toward Christ’s victory. The dragon attempts to destroy the child, but the child is preserved. The chapter later describes a heavenly conflict and the defeat of the dragon.
Therefore, Revelation 12:4 should not primarily produce fear. It should encourage faith.
Satan is presented as an enemy, but he is also presented as a defeated enemy whose final judgment is certain. Christ’s authority is greater than Satan’s power, and God’s kingdom will ultimately prevail.
For believers, the passage encourages spiritual alertness. Christians should recognize that evil is real, deception is dangerous, and spiritual opposition exists. At the same time, they should not live in despair. The central message of Revelation is that God and His Christ have the final victory.
