English Explanation
Revelation 13:5 describes the authority, speech, and limited period of activity given to the beast. This verse is part of the prophetic vision in which John sees a beast rising with extraordinary influence and power. The verse emphasizes three important ideas: the beast’s arrogant speech, its blasphemy against God, and the limited time allowed for its authority.
“There was given unto him a mouth”
The wording “there was given unto him” is important. It indicates that the beast does not possess unlimited authority independently. Its ability to speak and exercise power is described as something that is given or permitted.
This teaches an important biblical principle: even when evil appears extremely powerful, it remains under the ultimate sovereignty of God. The beast may act with great authority, but its authority has boundaries.
The phrase “a mouth” draws attention to the beast’s communication. Its words are not presented as ordinary political speech. They are powerful, arrogant, and hostile toward God. Revelation repeatedly shows that words can reveal the spiritual character of a ruler or system.
“Speaking great things”
The expression “speaking great things” refers to proud, boastful, and extraordinary claims. The beast presents itself with an attitude of superiority. Its speech reflects ambition, self-exaltation, and a desire to receive authority that belongs properly to God.
The Bible consistently warns against pride. Human beings may become impressed by political power, wealth, military strength, influence, or impressive achievements. Revelation reminds believers that greatness in the eyes of the world is not necessarily greatness in the eyes of God.
The beast’s speech represents the dangerous combination of power and pride. When authority is joined with arrogance and rebellion against God, it becomes a source of oppression and deception.
“And blasphemies”
The verse goes further by saying that the beast speaks “blasphemies.” Blasphemy means speech that dishonors, insults, defies, or falsely exalts itself against God and what is holy.
The following verses in Revelation 13 explain that the beast uses its mouth against God and His name. Therefore, the issue is not simply that the beast speaks proudly; its speech directly challenges divine authority.
This provides a spiritual warning for believers. The world may celebrate people who speak confidently and make enormous claims, but Christians are called to measure every claim against the truth of God.
Revelation also warns that impressive speech can become a tool of deception. A person or system may appear convincing, influential, and powerful while its message is fundamentally opposed to God.
“Power was given unto him”
Again, the verse says that power “was given” to the beast. This expression reminds readers that the beast’s authority is permitted rather than absolute.
Revelation does not teach that evil will ultimately defeat God. Instead, it presents a period in which evil is permitted to exercise considerable influence before divine judgment.
This is an important source of hope. When believers see injustice, persecution, deception, or rebellion against God, they may wonder why God allows such things to continue. Revelation answers partly by showing that evil has a limited period.
God remains sovereign even when evil appears dominant.
“Forty and two months”
The verse gives a specific period: forty-two months.
Forty-two months equals three and a half years. This period appears repeatedly in biblical prophecy in related forms, including “a time and times and half a time” and 1,260 days.
The important message is not merely the mathematical length of the period. It is the fact that the beast’s authority has a divinely limited duration.
The beast does not continue forever. Its authority has an appointed boundary.
This is one of the great themes of Revelation: evil may have a season, but evil does not have the final word.
A Limited Time of Evil
Revelation 13:5 can be especially meaningful to Christians experiencing persecution or living in difficult circumstances. The verse acknowledges that evil can become powerful and influential. It does not minimize the seriousness of opposition to God.
At the same time, the verse places a limit on that power.
The forty-two months remind believers that God’s purposes cannot be permanently defeated. The beast can speak, deceive, oppose, and exercise authority for a period, but its authority is temporary.
This gives Christians a reason to remain faithful rather than becoming overwhelmed by fear.
The Danger of Arrogant Power
Another lesson from this verse concerns the relationship between pride and power. The beast’s authority is accompanied by boastful and blasphemous speech.
Human history provides many examples of rulers and institutions becoming corrupted when power is treated as absolute. Revelation presents an extreme prophetic picture of this danger.
The Christian response should therefore include humility, discernment, and faithfulness. Believers should not automatically admire authority simply because it appears impressive.
True authority belongs ultimately to God.
Encouragement for Believers
Revelation 13 is a serious chapter, but its purpose is not simply to frighten readers. It calls believers to spiritual discernment and endurance.
The beast may have a mouth, authority, influence, and a period of permitted activity. But none of these things mean that the beast is equal to God.
God remains sovereign.
The limited forty-two-month period is therefore significant. It shows that the apparent triumph of evil is temporary. God’s final purpose will prevail.
For Christians today, the practical lesson is to remain faithful to God, resist deception, avoid spiritual compromise, and remember that worldly power is temporary.
When evil appears powerful, believers can remember that God sees the whole picture. What looks overwhelming for a season does not determine the final outcome.
