English Explanation

Revelation 15:5 presents another important scene in the heavenly vision given to the Apostle John. The verse says that John looked and saw “the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven” opened. This statement connects the events of Revelation with the holiness, presence, covenant, and righteous judgment of God.

The expression “after that I looked” shows that John is continuing to receive a series of visions. Revelation frequently uses this type of language because John is being shown different scenes that reveal God’s purposes. In the preceding verses, John saw those who had gained victory over the beast standing by the sea of glass and praising God. They sang the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb, declaring that God’s works are great and marvelous and that His ways are just and true.

Now the scene moves from the worship of God’s people to the opening of the heavenly temple. This transition is significant because what follows involves God’s righteous judgments upon the earth.

“The temple”

The word “temple” points to the dwelling place and holy presence of God. In Scripture, the temple is associated with worship, holiness, divine authority, and the presence of God among His people. The heavenly temple represents the reality of God’s holy dwelling and His sovereign rule.

The opening of the temple demonstrates that what happens next comes from the authority of God. The judgments described in Revelation are not random events or uncontrolled acts. They are presented as part of God’s righteous purpose.

This should encourage believers to understand that God remains sovereign even when the world appears chaotic. Human beings may experience injustice, persecution, suffering, and uncertainty, but Revelation repeatedly points back to the throne of God.

“The tabernacle of the testimony”

The phrase “the tabernacle of the testimony” has strong biblical significance. The tabernacle in the Old Testament was the place associated with God’s presence among Israel. The testimony was connected with the covenant and the testimony of God’s law.

The language in Revelation therefore reminds readers of God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His revealed character. God does not change His standards of righteousness according to human circumstances. His judgments are consistent with His holiness and truth.

The word “testimony” can also remind us that God’s revealed truth bears witness to who He is. His character is not hidden from those who seek Him. Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as holy, righteous, merciful, faithful, and just.

“In heaven”

The phrase “in heaven” is especially important. John is not describing an earthly temple in this verse. He is being shown a heavenly reality.

The heavenly setting emphasizes divine authority. The judgments that follow are connected with heaven, God’s throne, and His righteous government. The message is that history is not ultimately controlled by earthly rulers, political powers, armies, or human institutions. God remains Lord over all creation.

This truth is particularly important in the context of Revelation. The book describes powerful earthly systems and opposition to God, but those powers are never presented as ultimate. Their authority is temporary. God’s authority is eternal.

“Was opened”

The final phrase, “was opened,” introduces what happens next in the vision. The opening of the heavenly temple reveals that something is about to proceed from God’s presence.

In the following verses, seven angels come out of the temple with the seven last plagues. These plagues represent the completion of God’s wrath and judgment described in Revelation 15–16.

The opening of the temple therefore creates a solemn atmosphere. God’s holiness is being revealed, and His righteous judgment is moving toward its appointed completion.

For believers, this passage carries both a warning and a source of hope. It warns that God takes sin, rebellion, and injustice seriously. At the same time, it assures God’s people that evil will not continue forever. God sees what happens on earth, and His justice will ultimately be revealed.

Spiritual Lessons from Revelation 15:5

One important lesson is that God is holy. The heavenly temple reminds us that God is not like human rulers. His authority is perfect, and His judgments are righteous.

A second lesson is that God’s judgment has a purpose. Revelation does not portray divine judgment as arbitrary. The surrounding passage emphasizes God’s righteousness and truth. His judgments are consistent with His character.

A third lesson is that God remains in control. Even during the terrifying events described in Revelation, heaven is not confused or powerless. The heavenly temple is opened, and the events unfold according to God’s authority.

A fourth lesson is that God’s testimony remains true. Human beings may reject God’s truth, but rejection does not make His truth false. God’s Word continues to bear witness to His holiness and righteousness.

Finally, this verse encourages believers to live with reverence. Knowing that God is holy should affect the way we worship, speak, make decisions, and treat others. Revelation is not merely a book about future events; it is also a call to faithful living in the present.

“And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:”

“And after that I looked”

“The temple”

“The tabernacle of the testimony”

“In heaven”

“Was opened”
