English Explanation

Revelation 16:9 presents a powerful and serious picture of humanity during the judgments described in the book of Revelation. The verse says that people were “scorched with great heat.” This refers to the judgment associated with the fourth bowl, described immediately before this verse. The sun is given power to scorch people with fire. The suffering is severe, yet the most striking part of the verse is not simply the physical pain. It is the response of the people who experience it.

Instead of turning to God in repentance, they blaspheme the name of God. The verse therefore teaches an important spiritual lesson: suffering does not automatically produce repentance. A person may experience circumstances that reveal human weakness and dependence upon God, yet still choose rebellion rather than humility.

“Men were scorched with great heat”

The expression “great heat” describes an extraordinary judgment. Revelation uses vivid symbolic and apocalyptic language to communicate the seriousness of the events surrounding the final judgments. The fourth bowl judgment affects the sun, causing intense heat to fall upon humanity.

The passage should not be treated merely as a description of physical disaster. John is showing the seriousness of humanity’s condition when people persistently reject God. The judgments demonstrate that evil has consequences and that God’s authority cannot ultimately be ignored.

Throughout Scripture, God’s judgments are connected with His righteousness. God is not presented as acting randomly or without purpose. Revelation repeatedly emphasizes that God’s judgments are connected with His holiness and justice.

“And blasphemed the name of God”

The response of humanity is particularly tragic. Instead of recognizing God’s authority, the people blaspheme His name.

In biblical language, God’s name represents His character, authority, reputation, and identity. To blaspheme God’s name is therefore to speak against Him and treat His authority with contempt.

This response reveals the hardness of the human heart. The people understand that the plagues are connected with God’s power, yet instead of responding with repentance, they become even more hostile toward Him.

The verse provides a warning about the danger of allowing rebellion to become deeply established in the heart. When people continually reject truth, correction, and God’s authority, their hearts can become increasingly resistant to repentance.

“Which hath power over these plagues”

The verse specifically acknowledges that God has power over these plagues. This statement is significant because it makes clear that the judgments are not outside God’s authority.

The people know that the plagues are associated with God’s power, but knowledge alone does not produce repentance. A person can recognize God’s existence and power while still refusing to surrender to Him.

This is an important spiritual lesson for readers today. Biblical faith is not merely intellectual recognition. Genuine faith involves trust, humility, obedience, and a willingness to turn away from sin.

“And they repented not”

These words form one of the most serious statements in the verse.

“They repented not.”

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. In Revelation, repentance is repeatedly presented as the proper response to God’s warnings and judgments. Yet these people refuse to change.

The tragedy is that the opportunity to respond rightly is confronted with deliberate resistance. Their suffering does not soften their hearts. Instead, their rebellion continues.

This teaches that external circumstances alone cannot transform a person’s heart. Hardship can reveal what is already within us, but true repentance requires a willing response to God.

The verse therefore encourages readers not to wait for a crisis before seeking God. People should respond to God’s truth while they have the opportunity rather than assuming that they will automatically become spiritually receptive later.

“To give him glory”

The final phrase explains what the people refused to do: “to give him glory.”

Giving glory to God means recognizing His greatness, authority, holiness, and rightful place as Lord. Humanity was created to honor God, but sin turns people away from that purpose.

In Revelation 16:9, the people experience God’s judgment and know that His power is involved, yet they refuse to honor Him. Their refusal demonstrates the depth of their rebellion.

The verse therefore contrasts two possible responses to God: repentance and glorification of God, or rebellion and blasphemy.

A warning about hardened hearts

Revelation 16:9 is not simply a description of future judgment. It also provides a spiritual warning for the present.

A hardened heart does not develop instantly. Repeated rejection of truth can gradually make a person less responsive to correction. When God exposes sin, the appropriate response is humility and repentance.

The verse reminds believers that God’s authority deserves reverence. It also encourages people to examine their own hearts. When confronted with wrongdoing, do we become defensive, or are we willing to turn back to God?

The importance of repentance

One of the central lessons of Revelation is that God calls people to remain faithful and turn away from evil. Revelation contains warnings about judgment, but it also repeatedly emphasizes God’s call to repentance.

Repentance is not simply feeling bad about wrongdoing. It involves a genuine change of direction. It means acknowledging sin, seeking God’s mercy, and choosing to walk according to His truth.

Revelation 16:9 shows the opposite response. The people suffer under judgment but still refuse to repent. Their example warns readers about the spiritual danger of stubbornness.

Hope for those who turn to God

Although Revelation contains difficult descriptions of judgment, its larger message points toward God’s ultimate victory over evil and the establishment of His righteous kingdom. The warnings are therefore meant to be taken seriously.

For Christians, this verse can encourage a life of humility, faithfulness, prayer, and obedience. Instead of waiting for difficult circumstances to force spiritual reflection, believers can continually seek God and give Him glory.

Revelation 16:9 teaches that recognizing God’s power is not enough; the proper response is repentance, humility, and giving glory to God.
