English Explanation
Revelation 19:2 is a powerful declaration of praise because it announces that God’s judgments are true and righteous. The verse follows the dramatic judgment of Babylon, symbolized in Revelation as “the great whore.” The heavenly multitude recognizes that God has finally judged a corrupt system that had influenced the earth, encouraged spiritual unfaithfulness, and caused suffering among God’s servants.
The central message of this verse is that God’s justice is perfect, trustworthy, and morally right. Human beings may sometimes question why evil continues or why wicked people appear to prosper, but Revelation presents a future moment when God will bring every matter into righteous judgment.
“True and righteous are his judgments”
The opening statement gives the foundation for the entire verse. God’s judgments are described as both true and righteous.
“True” means that God’s judgment is based on reality and truth. God does not judge according to appearances, rumors, political influence, wealth, or human popularity. He sees the complete reality of a person, institution, or system.
“Righteous” means that His judgment is morally perfect. There is no injustice, corruption, favoritism, or error in His decisions. Human courts can make mistakes, and human justice can sometimes be influenced by power or money. The judgment of God, however, is presented as completely just.
This should give believers confidence. Even when injustice appears to dominate the world, God has not lost control. His justice may not always appear immediately, but Revelation assures readers that evil will ultimately face judgment.
“He hath judged the great whore”
The “great whore” is symbolic language used in Revelation for Babylon and the corrupt system associated with it. Revelation 17–18 describes Babylon as a powerful influence characterized by immorality, spiritual corruption, materialism, pride, and opposition to God.
The expression should not simply be understood as describing one individual woman. In the prophetic imagery of Revelation, a woman can represent a larger spiritual or societal reality. Here, “the great whore” represents a corrupt power that has drawn people away from faithfulness to God.
The imagery of sexual immorality also carries a spiritual meaning. Throughout Scripture, unfaithfulness to God is sometimes compared with adultery or fornication. Therefore, the language points beyond physical immorality to spiritual unfaithfulness, idolatry, corruption, and rebellion against God.
The judgment of Babylon demonstrates that no corrupt system is permanent. A power may become wealthy, influential, impressive, and apparently unstoppable, but it remains accountable to God.
“Which did corrupt the earth with her fornication”
The verse explains why judgment came. Babylon had “corrupt[ed] the earth with her fornication.”
This corruption can be understood as a broad influence that encouraged people and nations to abandon righteousness. Revelation presents Babylon as something that seduces the world through its power, wealth, luxury, false values, and rebellion against God.
The lesson is important for believers today. Evil does not always appear frightening or obviously destructive. Sometimes corruption comes through attraction, prosperity, popularity, pleasure, or promises of success.
Revelation warns believers not to measure something by its outward appearance. A system may look successful while being spiritually corrupt. True success is ultimately measured by faithfulness to God rather than wealth, influence, or worldly recognition.
“Hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand”
The final part of the verse focuses on the suffering of God’s servants. Babylon is portrayed as responsible for persecuting and killing God’s people. God now brings justice on behalf of those who suffered.
The word “avenged” here should not be understood as encouraging personal revenge. Scripture consistently teaches believers to leave ultimate vengeance and judgment to God. Instead, this statement emphasizes divine justice.
God remembers the suffering of His servants. Their pain was not meaningless, and their deaths were not forgotten.
This message would have been especially meaningful to early Christians who experienced persecution. Revelation assures suffering believers that God sees what happens to them and that evil will not have the final word.
The same principle can encourage Christians today. When believers experience injustice because of their faith, they may feel forgotten. Revelation 19:2 reminds them that God sees the whole picture. His justice is certain, even when its timing is beyond human understanding.
The relationship between justice and praise
An important feature of Revelation 19 is that heaven responds to God’s judgment with praise. The judgment of Babylon is not presented as an uncontrolled emotional reaction. It is celebrated because God’s righteous character has been revealed.
The verse teaches that genuine worship includes confidence in God’s justice. Christians praise God not only because He gives blessings but also because He is righteous and will ultimately confront evil.
This provides a balanced understanding of God. His love does not mean that He ignores evil. His mercy does not mean that injustice will continue forever. His righteousness means that evil will eventually be exposed and judged.
A lesson for Christian living
Revelation 19:2 also calls believers to examine their own relationship with the world. Babylon represents a corrupt influence that competes with loyalty to God. Christians are therefore encouraged to avoid allowing materialism, pride, immoral values, greed, or worldly power to become more important than faithfulness to God.
The verse is ultimately a message of hope. God remains sovereign. Truth will prevail. Righteousness will triumph. Those who have suffered for their faith are not forgotten, and corrupt powers cannot escape God’s final judgment.
“For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.”
“True and righteous are his judgments”
“He hath judged the great whore”
“Great whore”
“Which did corrupt the earth with her fornication”
“Hath avenged the blood of his servants”
