Detailed Explanation in English

1. “But this thou hast”

The verse begins with the words, “But this thou hast.” Jesus is pointing to something good that remained in the church at Ephesus.

Earlier in the message, Jesus had identified serious concerns about the church, especially that it had “left thy first love” (Revelation 2:4). Yet He did not overlook the things they were doing correctly.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: God sees both our strengths and our weaknesses. A church or individual may have areas that need repentance while still being faithful in other areas.

The Ephesian believers had demonstrated discernment. They were not willing to accept every teaching or practice simply because someone presented it as spiritual.

2. “That thou hatest the deeds”

The specific thing Jesus commends is that they “hatest the deeds” of the Nicolaitans.

Notice that the verse says “deeds,” not people.

This distinction is important. Biblical opposition to sin should not become hatred toward human beings. Christians are called to love their neighbors, pray for others, show mercy, and seek truth. At the same time, they are not expected to approve of practices that contradict God’s commandments.

The Ephesian church apparently understood this distinction. They rejected practices they believed were sinful without abandoning their responsibility to live according to God’s truth.

This is an important lesson for Christian life today. Love does not require approval of everything. A believer can treat another person with kindness and dignity while still disagreeing with a particular action or teaching.

3. Who were the Nicolaitans?

The Nicolaitans are mentioned in Revelation 2:6 and again in Revelation 2:15.

The Bible itself gives relatively limited information about this group. Because of this, later Christian writers and interpreters have proposed different explanations concerning their identity and teachings.

Revelation 2:14–15 connects the teaching associated with the Nicolaitans with practices comparable to the error of Balaam, particularly the encouragement of compromise involving idolatry and sexual immorality. Therefore, the clearest biblical context associates the Nicolaitans with teachings and practices that encouraged spiritual compromise.

It is important not to claim more historical detail than Scripture provides. The central point of Revelation 2:6 is not to provide a complete history of the Nicolaitans. Its central point is that the Ephesian believers refused to accept their deeds.

4. “Which I also hate”

The final words are especially striking:

“Which I also hate.”

The word “hate” here expresses God’s complete opposition to sinful deeds. It should not be interpreted as permission for personal bitterness, cruelty, or hatred toward people.

Throughout Scripture, God is presented as righteous and opposed to evil. His holiness means that He does not treat sin as something insignificant.

This gives the verse a serious message: Christians should not become comfortable with practices that Scripture identifies as sinful simply because those practices become popular, socially accepted, or attractive.

At the same time, believers should examine themselves carefully. The verse is not an invitation to become obsessed with identifying other people’s sins while ignoring their own.

5. The connection with spiritual discernment

Revelation 2:6 follows Jesus’ commendation of the Ephesian church for testing those who claimed to be apostles but were not.

This creates a broader theme of spiritual discernment.

A faithful Christian should ask:

  • Is this teaching consistent with Scripture?
  • Does this practice honor God?
  • Does it lead people toward holiness?
  • Does it encourage faithfulness to Christ?
  • Does it compromise biblical truth?

Discernment does not mean becoming suspicious of everyone. It means carefully examining teachings and actions rather than accepting everything without question.

The Ephesian believers were commended because they did not tolerate practices they understood to be contrary to God’s truth.

6. Hatred of evil must not replace love for Christ

There is another important lesson because of the larger message to Ephesus.

Jesus praised the Ephesians for rejecting false teaching and the deeds of the Nicolaitans, but He also told them that they had left their first love.

This shows that doctrinal discernment alone is not enough.

A Christian can be knowledgeable about Scripture, capable of identifying false teaching, and strongly opposed to sinful practices, yet still need spiritual renewal in personal devotion to Christ.

Truth and love belong together.

Believers are called to remain faithful to God’s truth while maintaining humility, compassion, patience, and love.

7. A warning against compromise

Revelation 2:6 also provides a warning about spiritual compromise.

Compromise can happen gradually. A person may first tolerate something that seems insignificant. Over time, that tolerance can become acceptance, and acceptance can eventually influence behavior.

The message to Ephesus reminds Christians that faithfulness sometimes requires saying no to practices that conflict with God’s Word.

This does not mean living in fear of every cultural change. Instead, it means maintaining a biblical foundation and allowing Scripture to guide moral and spiritual decisions.

8. What Christians can learn today

Revelation 2:6 can be applied in several practical ways.

First, know God’s Word.
Discernment requires knowledge. A person cannot recognize spiritual error without understanding biblical truth.

Second, examine teachings carefully.
Not every spiritual-sounding message is necessarily faithful to Scripture.

Third, distinguish people from sinful actions.
Christians can reject sinful deeds while continuing to treat people with dignity and compassion.

Fourth, avoid spiritual compromise.
Faithfulness sometimes requires refusing practices that conflict with God’s commandments.

Fifth, maintain love for Christ.
Correct doctrine and moral discernment should never become substitutes for genuine devotion to Jesus.

Sixth, examine your own life.
Before criticizing others, believers should ask whether their own lives reflect repentance, obedience, humility, and love.
