English Explanation

Revelation 20:10 presents one of the most solemn and decisive statements about the final defeat of evil in the Bible. The verse describes what happens to the devil, the deceiver who has opposed God and led humanity into rebellion. After the events described in Revelation 20, Satan is finally cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet already are. The verse concludes by describing their continuing punishment as being “tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

1. “The devil that deceived them”

The verse begins by identifying the devil as the one “that deceived them.” Deception is one of the major descriptions of Satan’s activity throughout Revelation. He works through lies, temptation, false promises, and opposition to God’s truth.

In the preceding context, Satan is released for a final period and goes out to deceive the nations. He gathers them for rebellion against God’s people. Yet this rebellion does not succeed. God’s authority remains absolute, and evil cannot ultimately overcome His purposes.

The phrase reminds readers that spiritual deception is serious. Evil often does not appear openly evil at first. It can present falsehood as truth and rebellion as freedom. Scripture therefore repeatedly calls people to discernment, faithfulness, and obedience to God’s truth.

2. “Was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone”

The devil is finally cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. This represents the final judgment of Satan.

The lake of fire has already appeared in Revelation as the place associated with God’s final judgment. Earlier in Revelation 20, the beast and the false prophet are described as being cast into this place. Now the devil himself is cast there.

This is important because Satan’s opposition to God is not temporary in its final outcome. Although evil may appear powerful for a season, it has a predetermined end under God’s judgment.

The imagery of fire and brimstone communicates the seriousness and completeness of divine judgment. It is not presented as a temporary defeat from which Satan can recover. Instead, the verse portrays the final removal of the devil from his position as deceiver and enemy.

3. “Where the beast and the false prophet are”

The verse says that the lake of fire is where “the beast and the false prophet are.” These figures represent major forces of opposition to God in the book of Revelation.

The beast is associated with rebellious worldly power, while the false prophet is associated with deceptive religious influence and false worship. Together, they oppose God’s kingdom and lead people away from faithfulness to God.

Their presence in the lake of fire demonstrates that every power that stands against God will ultimately face His judgment. Political power, deception, false worship, and satanic influence cannot establish a permanent kingdom against God.

4. “Shall be tormented day and night”

The verse uses the phrase “day and night” to communicate continual punishment. The language emphasizes that the judgment is not merely a brief event.

This is one of the strongest statements in Revelation concerning the final destiny of the devil. The passage does not describe Satan as eventually escaping his judgment or returning to deceive the nations again. His opposition has reached its final conclusion.

The seriousness of this statement also highlights the seriousness of evil itself. Sin is not something Scripture treats lightly. Rebellion against God has consequences, and God’s final judgment demonstrates His holiness, justice, and authority.

5. “For ever and ever”

The final words are “for ever and ever.” This expression emphasizes the everlasting character of the judgment described in the passage.

Revelation 20:10 therefore presents a decisive contrast between the temporary activity of evil and the ultimate permanence of God’s victory. Satan may deceive for a time, persecute God’s people, and encourage rebellion, but he does not win.

The final word belongs to God.

6. The victory of God over evil

One of the greatest themes of Revelation is that God remains sovereign even when evil appears dominant.

The book contains wars, persecution, deception, judgment, and rebellion. Nevertheless, these events never place God’s throne in danger. The conclusion of Revelation reveals that evil ultimately faces judgment while God’s kingdom endures.

Revelation 20:10 should therefore not be read only as a frightening passage. It is also a declaration of hope for those who trust God. The enemy who deceives the nations will not continue forever. The powers that oppose God’s people will not rule forever. God’s justice will ultimately prevail.

7. A warning against deception

This verse also provides a spiritual warning. Since the devil is specifically identified as “the devil that deceived them,” believers are encouraged to remain grounded in God’s truth.

Deception can take many forms: false teaching, spiritual pride, hatred, greed, idolatry, injustice, and the rejection of God’s commands. The answer is not fear but faithful dependence upon God and His truth.

The message of Revelation is ultimately a call to remain faithful to Christ despite pressure from the world.

8. A message of final hope

Revelation 20:10 points toward the complete restoration and renewal that follows God’s final judgment. Evil does not receive the final victory. Satan does not receive the final victory. The beast does not receive the final victory. The false prophet does not receive the final victory.

God’s purposes prevail.

For Christians, this provides confidence that suffering and opposition are temporary, while God’s kingdom and promises are everlasting. The verse reminds believers that they can remain faithful even when circumstances are difficult because the final outcome is already revealed.

“for ever and ever” — “ابدالآباد”
