English Explanation
Revelation 20:9 describes a dramatic moment near the end of the thousand-year reign mentioned earlier in Revelation 20. The verse presents a final gathering of rebellious forces against God’s people, followed by immediate divine judgment. It is a powerful passage about the holiness of God, the protection of His people, the seriousness of rebellion, and the certainty of God’s ultimate victory.
The verse begins, “And they went up on the breadth of the earth.” The people described here are connected with the nations that Satan deceives after the thousand years. Revelation 20:8 says that Satan will go out to deceive the nations in the four quarters of the earth, called Gog and Magog, gathering them for battle. The language emphasizes the enormous geographical reach of this rebellion. They are not described as a small group in an isolated location. They spread across the earth in opposition to God.
The next phrase says that they “compassed the camp of the saints about.” The saints are God’s people, those who belong to Him. The word “camp” creates the picture of an encamped community surrounded by hostile forces. From a human perspective, the situation appears extremely dangerous. The enemies surround the people of God, apparently preparing to attack them.
Yet the verse does not describe a long battle in which God’s people must defeat the opposing army through their own strength. Instead, the judgment comes directly from heaven.
The enemies also surround “the beloved city.” This expression has commonly been understood in connection with Jerusalem, particularly within the larger biblical context of the holy city and God’s purposes for His people. Revelation later speaks extensively about the New Jerusalem, the holy city that comes from God. The phrase “beloved city” therefore carries a strong sense of a place specially associated with God’s covenant purposes and His people.
One of the most important truths in this verse is that the apparent strength of the enemies does not determine the outcome. They surround the saints and the beloved city, but they do not overcome them. Their rebellion ends suddenly because “fire came down from God out of heaven.”
This fire represents direct divine judgment. The source is clearly identified: “from God out of heaven.” The emphasis is not on human military power or political authority. God Himself brings the rebellion to its conclusion.
Throughout Scripture, fire can be associated with God’s holy presence and judgment. In this passage, the fire demonstrates that evil cannot ultimately resist the authority of God. The enemies may gather in enormous numbers, but numbers cannot overcome divine sovereignty.
The final words are especially decisive: “and devoured them.” The rebellion is completely stopped. There is no suggestion that the attacking forces succeed in conquering the saints or taking the beloved city. Their attempt ends in divine judgment.
The Main Spiritual Message
Revelation 20:9 teaches that the apparent triumph of evil is temporary. Sometimes Scripture portrays God’s people as surrounded by opposition, and believers may experience similar situations in their own lives. The Christian message does not promise that believers will never face pressure, hostility, suffering, or opposition. Instead, Scripture repeatedly teaches that God remains sovereign even when circumstances appear frightening.
This verse also demonstrates the seriousness of rebellion against God. The nations have been deceived, and they gather against God’s people. Their rebellion is not presented as harmless disagreement. It represents organized opposition to God’s purposes.
At the same time, the passage shows that God’s judgment is certain. The enemies do not need to be defeated through a lengthy human campaign. God’s intervention is sufficient.
There is also an important contrast between human confidence and divine authority. The rebellious forces appear powerful because they are numerous and surround the saints. But their outward strength does not change the final reality. God remains in control.
For Christians, this passage can therefore provide both a warning and encouragement. It is a warning not to follow deception or rebellion against God. It is an encouragement to remain faithful even when opposition seems overwhelming.
The verse also points toward the larger conclusion of Revelation 20. Satan’s deception and the rebellion of the nations do not prevent God from accomplishing His purposes. The chapter continues with the judgment of the devil and the great white throne judgment. The overall message is that God’s justice will ultimately prevail.
Revelation 20:9 should therefore be read within the broader biblical teaching about God’s holiness, judgment, and final victory. It is not merely a description of an ancient military event. In the context of Revelation, it forms part of the prophetic picture of the final defeat of organized rebellion against God.
“And they went up on the breadth of the earth”
“and compassed the camp of the saints about”
“and fire came down from God out of heaven”
“and devoured them.”
