Detailed Explanation in English

Revelation 21:19 gives a beautiful description of the foundations of the wall surrounding the New Jerusalem. This verse is part of John’s vision of the holy city that comes down from heaven from God. The description emphasizes extraordinary beauty, permanence, purity, and the glory of God’s eternal dwelling place.

The verse begins by saying, “And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones.” The word “garnished” means decorated or adorned. John does not see ordinary construction materials. Instead, the foundations themselves are associated with precious stones. This presents the New Jerusalem as a city whose beauty is far beyond the greatest earthly buildings.

The New Jerusalem represents the eternal dwelling place of God with His redeemed people. Earlier in Revelation 21, John hears that the tabernacle of God will be with people and that God will dwell with them. The city therefore should not be viewed merely as an impressive architectural structure. Its description communicates the holiness, majesty, security, and glory associated with God’s eternal kingdom.

The First Foundation: Jasper

John says, “The first foundation was jasper.” Jasper is mentioned several times in Revelation. In Revelation 21:11, the light of the New Jerusalem is described as being like a stone most precious, even like jasper, clear as crystal.

The use of jasper in the foundations connects the city with brilliance and magnificent beauty. The foundation is not hidden or insignificant. In John’s vision, even the foundations are worthy of admiration.

A foundation normally represents strength and stability. Spiritually, this reminds readers that the future dwelling place of God’s people is secure. Earthly cities can be destroyed, kingdoms can disappear, and human achievements can fade. The city John sees belongs to an eternal kingdom.

The Second Foundation: Sapphire

The second foundation is sapphire. Sapphire is traditionally associated with a beautiful blue appearance and has long been considered a precious stone.

In biblical imagery, heavenly glory is sometimes connected with the appearance of sapphire. For example, Exodus 24 describes something under the feet of the God of Israel as being like a paved work of sapphire stone, as clear as heaven itself.

In Revelation 21, sapphire contributes to the magnificent picture of the New Jerusalem. The message is not simply that heaven will be beautiful in a physical sense. The precious materials point readers toward the incomparable glory of God and the perfection of the place He prepares for His people.

The Third Foundation: Chalcedony

The third foundation is chalcedony. This is another precious stone named among the foundations of the city.

John is not giving a technical explanation of modern mineralogy. His purpose is to communicate the extraordinary splendor of the New Jerusalem. The accumulation of precious stones creates a picture of abundance and magnificence.

The foundations of a city are normally hidden beneath the visible structure. Yet in this vision, the foundations themselves are celebrated. This can remind believers that God’s work is perfect from beginning to end. Nothing about His eternal kingdom is neglected or poorly constructed.

The Fourth Foundation: Emerald

The fourth foundation is emerald. Emerald is known for its beautiful green appearance and was regarded as a precious stone in the ancient world.

Revelation has already used emerald imagery. In Revelation 4:3, the appearance around the throne is compared to an emerald-like rainbow. The presence of emerald among the foundations therefore fits naturally within Revelation’s broader imagery of heavenly glory.

The repeated use of precious stones throughout Revelation also shows that John is attempting to describe realities that are greater than ordinary human experience. Human language struggles to communicate the full glory of what John sees.

Spiritual Meaning of the Foundations

One important lesson from this verse is the permanence of God’s eternal kingdom. Human cities are built, inhabited, changed, and eventually destroyed. The New Jerusalem is presented as an eternal city connected with God’s final victory.

Another lesson is the value God places on His eternal dwelling place. The foundations are described with precious stones because John wants his readers to understand that the glory of the New Jerusalem is beyond comparison.

The verse also encourages Christians to look beyond temporary earthly possessions. Precious stones are valuable in this world, but even the most valuable earthly treasures cannot compare with the glory described in Revelation 21.

The New Jerusalem is also a picture of God’s presence with His people. The greatest blessing of the city is not simply its gold, walls, gates, or precious stones. Revelation 21:3 explains that God will dwell with His people. The beauty of the city points toward the greater reality of living forever in the presence of God.

A Message of Hope

Revelation was written to believers who needed hope and encouragement. The early Christians faced suffering, opposition, and uncertainty. John’s vision reminds them that suffering does not have the final word.

The future God promises is glorious and secure. The New Jerusalem is not presented as a temporary improvement to the present world but as part of God’s final work of restoration.

For Christians today, Revelation 21:19 can therefore encourage perseverance. Earthly circumstances may change, but God’s promises remain firm. The precious foundations symbolize a kingdom whose glory cannot be compared with the temporary achievements of humanity.
