English Explanation
Revelation 3:22 is the closing statement of the message to the seven churches in the Book of Revelation. The verse says, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” Although these words are brief, they contain an important spiritual message about listening, obedience, repentance, and responding to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
The expression “He that hath an ear” refers to everyone who is willing to listen spiritually. Almost every person has physical ears, but Jesus is speaking about something deeper than ordinary hearing. A person may hear words without truly understanding them or allowing them to change his or her life. Spiritual hearing means receiving God’s truth with an open heart and being willing to respond to it.
What Does “Let Him Hear” Mean?
The command “let him hear” is an invitation as well as a responsibility. It encourages believers not merely to read the words of Scripture but to pay attention to what God is communicating through them.
Hearing God’s Word requires humility. A person who approaches Scripture only to confirm personal opinions may miss its message. True spiritual hearing involves asking, “What is God teaching me through His Word, and how should I respond?”
Throughout the Bible, hearing is frequently connected with obedience. The purpose of hearing God’s instruction is not simply to gain knowledge. God’s truth is intended to shape our character, decisions, relationships, faith, and daily conduct.
“What the Spirit Saith”
The verse specifically says to hear “what the Spirit saith.” The Holy Spirit is presented as the One communicating Christ’s message to the churches. This reminds Christians that the message of Scripture is not merely human advice. The Spirit calls God’s people toward faithfulness, repentance, perseverance, holiness, and renewed devotion to Christ.
In Revelation chapters 2 and 3, Christ gives messages to seven churches. Each church has its own circumstances, strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and spiritual needs. Yet the repeated statement, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches,” makes these messages relevant beyond the original congregations.
The churches were different, but the spiritual principles remain valuable. A believer can examine these messages and ask whether there are areas of spiritual growth, correction, or renewed faithfulness needed in his or her own life.
“Unto the Churches”
The plural word “churches” is significant. The message is not directed only toward one congregation or one generation. The churches throughout Revelation were real communities facing real challenges, but the spiritual instruction extends to God’s people more broadly.
This teaches that Christianity is not merely an individual journey. Believers are part of a spiritual community. Churches are called to remain faithful to Christ, preserve sound teaching, encourage believers, confront sin appropriately, and maintain love and devotion.
At the same time, the individual believer has personal responsibility. The command begins with “He that hath an ear.” Each person must decide whether to listen and respond.
A Call to Spiritual Attention
Modern life contains countless voices competing for our attention. People hear opinions through television, social media, news, entertainment, education, and conversations every day. Revelation 3:22 reminds Christians that they must intentionally listen to God’s truth.
Spiritual hearing requires attention. It means making room for Scripture, prayer, reflection, and honest self-examination.
Sometimes God’s Word encourages us. Sometimes it corrects us. Sometimes it challenges attitudes we have become comfortable with. Sometimes it gives hope when circumstances are difficult. The important response is not merely to hear but to receive the message faithfully.
Hearing Must Lead to Action
One of the central lessons connected with this verse is that genuine hearing should produce a response.
A person can know many Bible verses and still fail to practice their teachings. Biblical knowledge becomes spiritually fruitful when it influences everyday life.
For example, if Scripture teaches forgiveness, hearing that teaching should influence how we respond to those who have hurt us. If Scripture teaches love, that love should become visible in our relationships. If Scripture calls believers to repentance, hearing that call should lead to turning away from sinful behavior.
Therefore, Revelation 3:22 can be understood as a call to listen, understand, believe, and respond.
The Message for Believers Today
This verse remains relevant because every generation needs spiritual discernment. Christians can become distracted, discouraged, spiritually complacent, or overly influenced by surrounding culture. The repeated call to hear what the Spirit says directs attention back to Christ and His Word.
The verse also gives encouragement. God has not left His people without guidance. Scripture provides instruction, correction, encouragement, warning, and hope.
The proper question is not simply, “What does this verse mean?” but also, “How should this truth affect my life?”
A believer may ask:
- Am I listening carefully to God’s Word?
- Am I willing to accept correction?
- Am I obeying what I already know?
- Have distractions weakened my spiritual attention?
- Am I encouraging others to remain faithful?
- Is my relationship with Christ growing?
- Am I responding to the Spirit’s call with humility?
These questions can turn Bible reading from a purely intellectual activity into a meaningful spiritual practice.

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
