English Explanation

Revelation 5:1 introduces one of the most important scenes in the book of Revelation. John is given a vision of heaven, where he sees the One sitting upon the throne. In His right hand is a book, or scroll, that is written on both sides and sealed with seven seals. This scene prepares the reader for the appearance of the Lamb, who alone is worthy to open the scroll and reveal what is contained within it.

1. “I saw”

The verse begins with the words, “And I saw.” This reminds us that Revelation contains a series of visions given to John. John was not merely communicating an idea that he had developed himself. He was describing what he saw in the heavenly vision.

Throughout Revelation, John repeatedly uses the language of seeing, hearing, and witnessing. These descriptions invite readers to pay attention to the spiritual reality being revealed.

Revelation 5 follows the magnificent throne-room vision of Revelation 4. In chapter 4, attention is focused upon God as the Creator and upon the worship taking place around His throne. In chapter 5, the focus moves toward God’s purposes for history and the One who is worthy to carry them forward.

2. “In the right hand of him that sat on the throne”

John sees the scroll in the right hand of the One seated on the throne. The throne represents God’s supreme authority and rule.

In biblical imagery, the right hand frequently represents authority, strength, honor, and power. The fact that the scroll is held in the right hand emphasizes that what is about to unfold is under divine authority.

Human beings may make plans, kingdoms may rise and fall, and earthly rulers may exercise power for a time, but Revelation presents God as the ultimate ruler over history.

This is an important message for believers. Even when circumstances appear confusing or frightening, history is not outside God’s control.

3. “A book written within and on the backside”

The word “book” in the KJV refers to a scroll or written document. John sees that it is written “within and on the backside.”

Writing on both sides communicates the idea of a document that is completely filled with writing. There is no empty space left for additional material. It suggests the fullness and completeness of what God has determined.

The scroll is associated with God’s purposes concerning the events that are about to be revealed. Revelation 6 onward describes the opening of the seals and the dramatic events connected with God’s judgment and the fulfillment of His purposes.

The scroll therefore creates anticipation. Something important has been written, but it cannot yet be opened.

4. “Sealed with seven seals”

The scroll is “sealed with seven seals.”

A seal in the ancient world could identify ownership, protect the contents of a document, and prevent unauthorized people from opening it. A sealed document could only be opened by someone who possessed the proper authority.

The number seven is particularly significant throughout Revelation. It often communicates completeness or fullness. Revelation contains seven churches, seven spirits, seven lamps, seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls.

Therefore, the seven seals emphasize the complete and secure nature of the document.

The scroll cannot simply be opened by human curiosity. It is under divine authority, and its opening requires someone who is worthy.

5. The importance of the scroll

The scroll in Revelation 5 creates a dramatic question: Who is worthy to open it?

The following verses make this question central. John sees that no one in heaven, earth, or under the earth is found worthy to open the book or even to look upon it. John begins to weep because no one is found worthy.

Then one of the elders tells him not to weep because the Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed. When John looks, however, he sees a Lamb standing as though it had been slain.

This is one of the most powerful images in the entire New Testament. The One who is worthy is Jesus Christ. He is described both as the conquering Lion and as the sacrificial Lamb.

The scroll therefore points toward God’s redemptive and judicial purposes, which are carried forward through Christ.

6. God remains sovereign over history

Revelation 5:1 provides an important biblical perspective on history. The world may appear chaotic from an earthly viewpoint, but the heavenly throne shows that God remains sovereign.

The scroll is already in God’s hand before any seal is opened. This means that the events revealed in the following chapters are not random accidents beyond divine knowledge.

For Christians, this provides encouragement. God knows the beginning and the end. His purposes are not defeated by earthly circumstances.

7. A message of hope for believers

This verse also teaches believers to trust God even when they cannot understand everything that is happening.

John sees a sealed scroll, but he does not initially know how it will be opened. The complete answer comes as the Lamb appears.

Likewise, believers may sometimes see only part of God’s plan. Questions about suffering, injustice, persecution, and the future may remain unanswered for a time. Revelation reminds us that the answer ultimately rests in Christ.

The Christian message is not that every mystery is immediately explained. It is that Christ is worthy, Christ is victorious, and God remains sovereign.

Spiritual Lessons from Revelation 5:1

First, God is sovereign. The scroll is in the hand of the One seated on the throne. God’s authority is greater than every earthly authority.

Second, God’s purposes are secure. The seven seals demonstrate that what God has determined cannot be casually altered or opened by unauthorized hands.

Third, history has a divine purpose. The scroll points toward events that unfold according to God’s purposes.

Fourth, Christ is central to God’s plan. The mystery of the scroll leads directly to the Lamb who is worthy to open it.

Fifth, believers can have hope. Even when the future is uncertain to us, it is not uncertain to God.

Revelation 5:1 therefore moves the reader from the throne of God toward the victory of Christ. The sealed scroll creates suspense, but the following verses provide the answer: the Lamb is worthy.
