English Explanation
Revelation 5:10 is a powerful declaration about the identity, calling, and future hope of God’s redeemed people. The verse appears in the heavenly worship surrounding Jesus Christ, the Lamb who is worthy to take the book and open its seals. The redeemed praise Christ because He has purchased people for God and has given them a special spiritual position: “kings and priests.” The verse concludes with the promise, “we shall reign on the earth.”
“And hast made us unto our God”
The first important truth is that this position comes from Christ. The redeemed do not make themselves kings and priests through human achievement, wealth, education, social position, or personal power. Christ has made them what they are.
This points to the transforming work of God in the lives of believers. Before redemption, humanity is separated from God because of sin. Through the work of Jesus Christ, believers are brought into a relationship with God and become part of His redeemed people.
The phrase “unto our God” also emphasizes belonging. Christians belong to God. Their identity is ultimately not determined by earthly status but by their relationship with their Creator and Redeemer.
This is an encouragement to believers who may feel insignificant in the world. A person may have little influence according to earthly standards, but God gives His people a much greater spiritual identity.
“Kings”
The word “kings” points toward authority and future participation in Christ’s kingdom. Scripture repeatedly teaches that Jesus Christ is the true King, and His redeemed people will share in His kingdom according to His purpose.
This does not mean that Christians should become proud or seek domination over others. Biblical authority is different from worldly ambition. Jesus taught His followers that greatness is connected with service. Therefore, being associated with Christ’s reign should produce humility, faithfulness, righteousness, and service.
The believer’s future reign is ultimately connected to Christ’s victory. Jesus is the King, and His people participate in His kingdom because they belong to Him.
This gives Christians hope when earthly circumstances are difficult. Political systems change, nations rise and fall, and human power is temporary. The kingdom of Christ is presented in Scripture as belonging to God’s ultimate purposes.
“And priests”
The second description is “priests.” In the Bible, priests were associated with worship, service to God, and approaching God on behalf of His people.
Through Christ, believers have been given a spiritual calling. They are called to worship God, serve Him, proclaim His truth, and live lives that reflect His holiness.
Being a priest does not mean that Christians become independent mediators who replace Jesus. The New Testament teaches that Christ is the unique mediator between God and humanity. Rather, the priestly identity of believers emphasizes their direct relationship with God and their calling to serve Him.
A believer’s life is therefore meant to be an offering of worship. Worship is not limited to singing in a church service. It includes obedience, love, generosity, prayer, service, forgiveness, and faithful living.
“And we shall reign on the earth”
The final statement is a promise of future hope: “we shall reign on the earth.”
This phrase connects the redeemed with God’s future purposes for the earth. Revelation does not present salvation merely as escape from earthly existence. It points toward the ultimate triumph of Christ and the establishment of His righteous rule.
Christians can therefore look beyond present suffering. The world may currently experience injustice, conflict, corruption, and suffering, but these conditions do not represent the final outcome described in Revelation.
The promise of reigning with Christ should encourage believers to remain faithful. Earthly circumstances are temporary, while God’s promises have eternal significance.
The Context of Revelation 5
Revelation 5 presents one of the most important scenes in the book of Revelation. John sees God upon the throne and a book sealed with seven seals. A question is raised concerning who is worthy to open the book.
John initially weeps because no one is found worthy. Then one of the elders tells him not to weep because the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed.
When John looks, he sees the Lamb. The Lamb represents Jesus Christ, whose sacrificial death accomplished redemption.
The heavenly worship that follows focuses on Christ’s worthiness. Revelation 5:10 is therefore not primarily about human greatness. It is about what Christ has accomplished for His people.
The redeemed are kings and priests because the Lamb has redeemed them.
What This Verse Teaches Christians Today
Revelation 5:10 contains several important lessons.
First, believers have a new identity. Their value is not determined by worldly success. Their identity is connected to God and Christ.
Second, Christians are called to serve. Being called priests means that believers should live lives devoted to God.
Third, Christians should exercise spiritual responsibility with humility. The promise of future reign should never become an excuse for pride or domination.
Fourth, believers have a future hope. The present world is not the final chapter. Christ’s kingdom and God’s purposes will ultimately prevail.
Fifth, Christ deserves the glory. The redeemed praise Him because He is worthy. Their position is a gift of redemption, not a human achievement.
“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests, and we shall reign on the earth.”
“And hast made us unto our God”
“Priests” —
“We shall reign on the earth”
“And we shall reign on the earth.”
