English Explanation
Revelation 9:15 is part of the sixth trumpet judgment in the Book of Revelation. The verse describes four angels who had been restrained at the great river Euphrates and were released at the appointed time. Their release is connected with a terrible judgment in which a third part of humanity is killed. The language is solemn and emphasizes both the seriousness of judgment and the complete authority of God over the events described in Revelation.
The Four Angels Were Loosed
The verse begins, “And the four angels were loosed.” Earlier in Revelation 9, John heard a voice from the golden altar before God commanding the sixth angel to release the four angels bound at the Euphrates. Their being “loosed” means that a restraint was removed and they were permitted to carry out the role appointed to them.
The important point is that these events do not happen outside God’s knowledge or authority. Revelation repeatedly presents God as sovereign over history. Even when the judgment is frightening and destructive, the timing and limits remain under divine authority.
The four angels should not automatically be understood as holy angels in the sense of angels who serve God faithfully. The context describes them as having been bound and prepared for this particular judgment. Revelation uses angelic language in different contexts, so their exact nature has been interpreted differently by Bible commentators.
“Prepared for an Hour, and a Day, and a Month, and a Year”
One of the most striking expressions in the verse is the statement that the four angels were “prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year.”
This wording emphasizes an appointed time. The judgment is not presented as an accidental event. A specific period had been determined for their release and activity.
The phrase can be understood as pointing to a divinely appointed moment rather than necessarily giving a simple mathematical timetable. Revelation contains prophetic symbolism, and readers should therefore be careful about turning every time expression into a modern chronological prediction.
The central lesson is clear: God’s judgment occurs according to His appointed purpose and timing.
Human beings often experience history as unpredictable. Wars, disasters, political changes, and social upheavals can appear chaotic. Revelation, however, presents a different perspective. Behind the apparent disorder of history is the sovereignty of God.
“For to Slay the Third Part of Men”
The purpose of their release is given directly: “for to slay the third part of men.”
This is an extremely severe judgment. The expression “third part” indicates a limited but enormous portion of humanity. Revelation frequently uses fractions such as a third to describe judgments. The limitation is significant. Even in the midst of judgment, the destruction is presented as having a boundary.
This verse should not be treated merely as a frightening prediction. It is also a warning about the seriousness of rebellion against God. Revelation presents humanity as accountable to its Creator. The judgments described throughout the book demonstrate that evil does not continue forever without consequence.
At the same time, Revelation is not teaching that every human tragedy should immediately be identified with a particular prophetic judgment. Christians should approach difficult prophetic passages with humility and avoid claiming certainty where Scripture itself leaves room for interpretation.
The Euphrates and the Prophetic Setting
The previous verse identifies the location of the four angels as the great river Euphrates. The Euphrates was historically associated with the eastern boundary of the land of Israel and with major ancient kingdoms and military powers.
Within the imagery of Revelation, the Euphrates contributes to the sense of a massive conflict and judgment. The river also appears elsewhere in biblical prophecy, making it an important symbol in discussions about God’s judgment and the nations.
However, interpretations differ. Some readers understand the passage primarily as describing literal future events, while others emphasize its symbolic and apocalyptic character. The safest approach is to recognize the theological message without pretending that every detail has only one possible interpretation.
God’s Sovereignty Over Time
A major theme of Revelation 9:15 is divine sovereignty.
The four angels are not simply released whenever they choose. They are described as having been prepared for an appointed time. This teaches that God’s purposes are not governed by human circumstances.
For believers, this can provide both seriousness and comfort. The verse is serious because it reminds humanity that judgment is real. It is comforting because history is not ultimately without direction.
The Bible consistently teaches that God is righteous and that evil will eventually face judgment. Revelation brings that theme to its most dramatic expression.
A Warning to Humanity
Revelation 9 is also a warning about the human response to judgment. Later in the chapter, despite the terrible judgments, many people still refuse to repent of their sins. This shows that witnessing judgment does not automatically produce genuine repentance.
True repentance involves turning away from sin and turning toward God. The message of Revelation therefore should not simply produce fear. It should encourage people to examine their lives, seek God sincerely, and remain faithful to Christ.
Spiritual Lesson for Today
Although Revelation 9:15 describes a dramatic prophetic judgment, it also contains principles that are relevant to believers today.
First, God’s timing is perfect. Human beings may not understand why certain events happen when they do, but Scripture repeatedly emphasizes God’s control over time.
Second, evil has consequences. Scripture does not present wickedness as something that God will ignore forever.
Third, human life is precious. The statement that a third of humanity is killed should awaken a serious appreciation for life and the urgency of spiritual repentance.
Fourth, prophecy should produce faithfulness rather than speculation. Christians should not become obsessed with assigning modern political events to every prophetic symbol. The proper response to Revelation is faithful obedience, watchfulness, and trust in God.
Finally, this passage reminds readers that God’s judgment is not the final message of the Bible. The larger biblical story moves toward God’s ultimate victory, the defeat of evil, and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.
“And the four angels were loosed” — “اور وہ چار فرشتے چھوڑ دیے گئے۔”
“which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year”
“for to slay the third part of men”
