English Explanation
Revelation 9:19 is part of the Apostle John’s vision concerning the terrifying horsemen released during the sixth trumpet judgment. The verse describes the unusual source of their power: their mouths and their tails. Their tails are compared to serpents and are said to have heads with which they cause harm.
This passage uses highly symbolic and dramatic imagery. Revelation frequently communicates heavenly and prophetic realities through visions involving beasts, animals, weapons, fire, darkness, and other extraordinary images. The purpose is not merely to create fear, but to communicate the seriousness of judgment, human rebellion, and the consequences of turning away from God.
Power in Their Mouths
The verse begins:
“For their power is in their mouth…”
The mouth is frequently associated in Scripture with speech, commands, declarations, testimony, and destructive words. In this vision, the creatures possess destructive power coming from their mouths. Revelation 9 describes fire, smoke, and brimstone proceeding from the mouths of the horses earlier in the passage.
The imagery emphasizes that their destructive capability is extraordinary. These are not ordinary earthly animals. John is describing something he saw in a prophetic vision, using familiar images to communicate something beyond ordinary human experience.
The mouth can represent the outward expression of an inward power. In biblical teaching, words can have profound consequences. Truth can encourage and restore, while lies, deception, and destructive speech can bring great damage. In Revelation, however, the immediate context concerns judgment rather than ordinary human conversation.
Power in Their Tails
The verse then says that their power is also “in their tails.”
This is an unusual feature. Normally, a creature’s tail is not considered its primary source of strength. John deliberately presents an unnatural and terrifying picture.
The repetition of the word “power” emphasizes that the danger comes from more than one direction. The creatures are dangerous from both the front and the rear. Their mouths bring destruction, while their tails also possess the ability to hurt.
This can remind readers that divine judgment described in Revelation is comprehensive. Human beings cannot assume that danger exists only where they expect it. The vision presents an overwhelming scene in which destructive forces operate in ways beyond ordinary human understanding.
Tails Like Serpents
John continues:
“for their tails were like unto serpents…”
The serpent is an important biblical image. One of the most significant appearances of the serpent is in Genesis, where the serpent is associated with temptation and deception. Later in Revelation, Satan himself is identified as “that old serpent” (Revelation 20:2).
Because of this biblical background, serpent imagery can carry associations of danger, deception, evil, and spiritual opposition. However, we should be careful not to assume that every appearance of a serpent in Scripture has exactly the same meaning. The immediate context must always be considered.
Here, the serpent-like tails emphasize the terrifying and harmful character of the creatures. John is not describing harmless animals. Their appearance communicates danger.
Heads on the Tails
The verse says that the tails “had heads.”
This makes the vision even more extraordinary. The creatures do not merely have serpent-like tails; those tails have heads capable of causing harm.
The imagery communicates intentional destructive capability. The tails are presented almost as independent weapons. They are not passive parts of the creatures but active sources of danger.
John’s description demonstrates how Revelation uses symbolic imagery to portray realities associated with God’s judgment. Rather than giving readers an ordinary military description, the vision presents supernatural-looking creatures whose appearance itself communicates terror.
“With Them They Do Hurt”
The final phrase says:
“and with them they do hurt.”
The word “hurt” is important because the vision concerns judgment. The preceding verses describe devastating consequences, including death. Revelation 9 presents a world experiencing severe judgment, yet the chapter also contains a sobering spiritual message: humanity’s suffering does not automatically produce repentance.
Later in Revelation 9:20–21, John says that those who remained after these judgments did not repent of their works. This is one of the most important lessons surrounding this passage.
The chapter therefore does more than describe frightening creatures. It challenges readers to consider the seriousness of sin and the tragedy of a heart that refuses to turn toward God even after experiencing severe consequences.
The Meaning of the Vision
There are different Christian interpretations of the imagery in Revelation 9. Some understand the creatures more literally as supernatural beings involved in future judgment. Others interpret much of the imagery symbolically, seeing the creatures as representing destructive forces, armies, spiritual realities, or events associated with the end times.
Because Revelation is highly symbolic, it is wise to avoid claiming certainty about details that the text itself does not explicitly explain.
What is clear is the central message: God’s judgment is real, serious, and beyond human control. The strange appearance of the creatures reinforces the terrifying nature of the judgment John witnessed.
The verse also reminds Christians not to become obsessed with identifying every symbolic detail. Revelation ultimately points readers toward God’s sovereignty, the seriousness of evil, the certainty of judgment, and the need for faithfulness.
A Spiritual Lesson
Revelation 9:19 can encourage believers to take spiritual matters seriously. The imagery is frightening, but it serves a greater purpose. Scripture repeatedly calls people to recognize God’s authority and turn away from evil.
The passage also teaches humility. We should not pretend to understand every detail of John’s vision when the biblical text does not provide a complete explanation. Faithful interpretation requires attention to the surrounding verses, the wider biblical context, and the central message of Revelation.
The terrifying creatures show that evil and judgment are not matters to treat lightly. At the same time, the book of Revelation ultimately presents God as sovereign over history. Evil does not have the final word.
For Christians, this passage can therefore be read as both a warning and a call to faithfulness. Instead of becoming consumed by speculation about prophetic symbols, believers can focus on living faithfully before God, rejecting evil, and holding firmly to the hope presented throughout Revelation.
“For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.”
“For their power is in their mouth…”
“for their tails were like unto serpents…”
“and with them they do hurt.”
