English Explanation
Revelation 9:3 describes one of the terrifying scenes connected with the sounding of the fifth trumpet. The Apostle John sees smoke rising from the bottomless pit, and from that smoke come locusts upon the earth. These are not presented simply as ordinary insects. The verse says that they are given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. This imagery communicates judgment, suffering, spiritual conflict, and the authority permitted to these destructive creatures.
The verse should be understood within the larger context of Revelation 9. In the previous verse, the bottomless pit is opened, and smoke rises from it like the smoke of a great furnace. The smoke darkens the sun and the air. Then, in verse 3, the locusts emerge from the smoke. Their appearance shows that the opening of the pit is followed by a terrible manifestation of judgment.
The Meaning of the Smoke
Smoke in this passage creates an atmosphere of darkness and fear. The source of the smoke is the bottomless pit, which represents a place associated with the powers of evil and divine judgment. The darkness is significant because Scripture frequently uses darkness as an image of confusion, judgment, separation from God, and the consequences of rebellion.
The locusts do not simply appear in an ordinary agricultural setting. They come out of the smoke. Their origin connects them with the supernatural events taking place after the opening of the bottomless pit.
This reminds readers that Revelation uses symbolic and highly visual language. John describes heavenly and spiritual realities through images that communicate their seriousness and terrifying nature.
The Locusts Upon the Earth
Locusts were familiar to people in the ancient world. A large swarm could destroy vegetation and bring severe agricultural devastation. Because of this, locusts became a powerful biblical picture of destruction and judgment.
The Old Testament contains important examples. In the book of Joel, a devastating locust invasion is associated with the Day of the Lord. In Revelation 9, however, the locusts have a very different and supernatural role. They are given power like scorpions, indicating that their effect is not merely the destruction of crops.
The verse therefore moves the imagery from ordinary agricultural destruction toward something much more terrifying.
“Unto Them Was Given Power”
One of the most important expressions in this verse is “unto them was given power.”
The wording emphasizes that their authority is given. They do not possess unlimited power independently. Their authority is permitted within the boundaries established by God.
This is an important theme throughout Revelation. Evil may appear extremely powerful, but it is never ultimately sovereign. God remains the supreme ruler, and even terrifying forces operate within limits that are established in the divine plan.
For believers, this provides an important message of hope. The world may experience suffering, deception, persecution, and judgment, but evil does not have the final word.
Power Like Scorpions
Scorpions were known for their painful sting. Their sting could cause intense suffering, making them a fitting image for the power given to these locusts.
The comparison does not necessarily mean that the locusts are ordinary scorpions or that they should be understood as a literal combination of insects. John is communicating through prophetic imagery. The locusts have power as the scorpions of the earth have power.
The comparison emphasizes pain, danger, and suffering.
Later in Revelation 9, the locusts are specifically instructed not to destroy the grass, trees, or other vegetation as ordinary locusts would. Instead, their purpose involves afflicting people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. This further demonstrates that the imagery is supernatural rather than a simple description of an agricultural plague.
A Warning About Judgment
Revelation 9:3 should not be separated from the broader message of Revelation. The book repeatedly calls people to recognize God’s holiness, turn away from rebellion, and remain faithful to Jesus Christ.
The frightening imagery reminds humanity that rebellion against God has serious consequences. Revelation is not merely a book about mysterious creatures and future events. It is also a message about God’s authority, judgment, justice, and ultimate victory.
The locusts therefore function as part of a larger warning. Human beings should not treat spiritual realities lightly or assume that evil will continue forever without consequence.
The Spiritual Lesson
There is also a powerful spiritual lesson in the fact that the locusts emerge from darkness. Darkness in Scripture can represent a world that has turned away from God’s truth. When humanity rejects God’s ways, the consequences can become destructive.
The passage encourages believers to remain spiritually alert. Christians are called to resist evil, remain faithful to Christ, and place their confidence in God rather than in worldly power.
Revelation 9:3 also teaches humility. Human beings cannot control every spiritual reality, and God’s prophetic purposes are greater than human understanding. The correct response to difficult prophetic passages is not fear or speculation alone, but careful study, faith, repentance, and trust in God.
