English Explanation

Revelation 9:7 presents one of the most unusual and symbolic descriptions in the book of Revelation. The verse describes strange locust-like creatures that appear during the sounding of the fifth trumpet. John does not simply call them ordinary locusts. Instead, he carefully describes their appearance through several comparisons: they are like horses prepared for battle, they have something resembling crowns like gold on their heads, and their faces are like the faces of men.

This passage should be read within the larger context of Revelation 9. Earlier in the chapter, the fifth angel sounds his trumpet, and a star falls from heaven. The fallen star is associated with the opening of the bottomless pit. Smoke rises from the pit, and from the smoke come locust-like beings. These creatures are given authority to torment people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. Therefore, Revelation 9:7 is part of a prophetic vision concerning judgment, spiritual conflict, and the seriousness of rebellion against God.

1. “The shapes of the locusts”

John begins by saying, “the shapes of the locusts.” This wording is important because the creatures are described in terms of their appearance rather than being presented simply as ordinary insects.

In the Bible, locusts can represent destruction and judgment. A swarm of natural locusts can destroy crops rapidly, leaving devastation behind. In Revelation, however, the imagery becomes far more supernatural and terrifying. Their appearance is designed to communicate something beyond ordinary agricultural destruction.

The unusual description reminds readers that Revelation frequently uses symbols to communicate spiritual realities. John sees something that is difficult to describe using ordinary human language, so he compares what he sees with familiar things.

2. “Like unto horses prepared unto battle”

The first comparison is striking. The locusts are “like unto horses prepared unto battle.”

A horse prepared for battle suggests strength, readiness, movement, and warfare. In the ancient world, horses were strongly associated with military power. A horse prepared for battle was not an image of peace or relaxation. It represented an approaching conflict.

This description therefore emphasizes the terrifying and organized nature of these creatures. They are not portrayed as a harmless swarm moving randomly. Their appearance suggests an army prepared for action.

The imagery also teaches an important spiritual lesson: the judgment described in Revelation is not accidental or uncontrolled. God remains sovereign over the events of Revelation. Even when terrifying forces appear, they operate within the limits permitted by God.

3. “On their heads were as it were crowns like gold”

John next says that on their heads were “as it were crowns like gold.”

Notice the careful wording: “as it were.” John is describing something that resembles a crown. He does not necessarily mean that these are ordinary royal crowns made of literal gold.

A crown commonly represents authority, victory, status, or power. The appearance of crowns therefore adds to the impression that these creatures possess significant authority.

Yet their authority should not be understood as equal to God’s authority. Revelation repeatedly teaches that every created power remains under God’s ultimate sovereignty.

The imagery can also create an ironic contrast. Crowns normally suggest honor and victory, while these creatures are associated with torment and judgment. Their crown-like appearance emphasizes the authority they have been permitted to exercise during this particular judgment.

4. “Their faces were as the faces of men”

The final description in this verse says that “their faces were as the faces of men.”

This makes the creatures even more mysterious. They are locust-like, but their faces resemble human faces.

The human-like appearance may emphasize intelligence, awareness, or purposeful action. Unlike ordinary insects, these creatures are presented as beings acting with intention.

This is one reason Revelation should not be reduced to a literal description of ordinary insects. The imagery combines characteristics from different creatures to communicate the terrifying nature of the vision.

The face of a human being can also remind readers of humanity’s responsibility before God. Throughout Scripture, people are accountable for their choices, and Revelation repeatedly calls humanity to repentance and faithfulness.

5. The relationship to the fifth trumpet

Revelation 9:7 cannot be understood properly without considering the fifth trumpet. The creatures appear as part of a judgment released after the opening of the bottomless pit.

The chapter emphasizes that these beings are not ordinary locusts. Their mission is connected with torment rather than destruction of vegetation. Their appearance is frightening because the vision communicates a severe period of judgment.

The verse therefore contributes to the larger message of Revelation: evil is real, judgment is serious, and God remains sovereign even over terrifying events.

6. A message about God’s sovereignty

One of the strongest lessons from this passage is that frightening spiritual forces do not operate independently of God.

Revelation 9 describes authority being given to these creatures, showing that their activity has boundaries. They do not possess unlimited power.

For believers, this can provide an important reminder. The world may contain spiritual conflict and circumstances that are difficult to understand, but God’s authority remains greater than every opposing power.

The passage should therefore not encourage believers to become obsessed with identifying every symbol with a modern political event, military organization, technology, or historical figure. Revelation calls readers first to recognize God’s authority and respond faithfully to Him.

7. The importance of reading Revelation carefully

Revelation contains visions, symbols, comparisons, numbers, and dramatic imagery. Revelation 9:7 is a clear example. John repeatedly uses words such as “like” and “as it were.”

These words indicate that he is describing what he saw through comparisons.

The purpose is not merely to satisfy human curiosity about the appearance of supernatural beings. The imagery creates a serious warning about judgment and the consequences of rebellion against God.

The passage should therefore be approached with humility. Where Christians have different interpretations concerning the exact identity of these creatures, the central message remains clear: God has authority over judgment, evil does not have unlimited power, and humanity should take God’s warnings seriously.

Spiritual Lessons from Revelation 9:7

This verse offers several important lessons.

First, spiritual conflict is serious. The battle imagery reminds us that Scripture does not present evil as something harmless.

Second, authority belongs ultimately to God. Even the terrifying creatures of this vision act within boundaries established by divine authority.

Third, outward power does not equal ultimate victory. The crown-like imagery may suggest authority, but Revelation ultimately points toward God’s final triumph.

Fourth, God’s warnings should not be ignored. Revelation contains judgment scenes not simply to frighten readers but to call them toward repentance, faithfulness, and reverence for God.

Finally, believers should remain spiritually alert. The imagery of an army prepared for battle encourages seriousness about one’s spiritual life rather than complacency.
