English Explanation

Ruth 3:2 records an important moment in Naomi and Ruth’s story. Naomi begins to explain to Ruth that Boaz is not merely a kind man who has allowed her to gather grain in his field. He is also a close relative of their family. Naomi says, “And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast?” This question reminds Ruth of the relationship between Boaz and Naomi’s family and prepares the way for the events that follow.

The chapter comes after Ruth has spent the barley and wheat harvest gleaning in Boaz’s field. Boaz had noticed Ruth’s faithfulness toward Naomi and had treated her with kindness and protection. He instructed his workers not to harm her and allowed her to continue gathering grain among his fields. Through these circumstances, Ruth had received food and security during a difficult season of her life.

Naomi now recognizes that Boaz may have an important role in providing a future for Ruth. She says that Boaz will be “winnowing barley to night in the threshingfloor.” Winnowing was part of the agricultural process in which harvested grain was separated from unwanted material. After threshing, the grain could be tossed or moved so that lighter chaff would be separated from the heavier grain. The threshingfloor was therefore an important place connected with the preparation and protection of the harvest.

The mention of the threshingfloor is significant because Naomi knows where Boaz will be that evening. She is giving Ruth information that will become important in the next part of the narrative. The verse itself does not contain the entire plan Naomi will describe, but it establishes the setting for the conversation that follows.

One important lesson from this verse is that God can work through ordinary circumstances. Ruth had simply gone into the fields to gather leftover grain because she and Naomi needed food. Yet those ordinary actions became part of a much greater story. Ruth’s daily work eventually brought her into contact with Boaz, a man who would become very important in her future.

The verse also demonstrates the importance of family relationships and responsibility in the biblical setting. Boaz was “of our kindred,” meaning that he belonged to Naomi’s extended family. This relationship becomes especially important as the story develops because the law and customs concerning family redemption provide the background for what happens in Ruth chapter 3 and chapter 4.

Naomi’s words also show her growing awareness that Ruth’s situation may be changing. Earlier in the story, Naomi had experienced deep sorrow and loss. She had returned to Bethlehem believing that her life had become empty. Ruth, however, remained faithfully beside her. By chapter 3, Naomi begins to look toward a possible future for Ruth.

The verse also teaches the value of wise planning. Naomi does not act impulsively. She observes the circumstances, understands the family relationship, and explains the situation to Ruth. The following verses show Naomi giving Ruth careful instructions. Whatever one’s circumstances, this passage encourages thoughtful action rather than unnecessary haste.

Boaz’s work at the threshingfloor also gives us a picture of diligence. Harvest required significant labor. Winnowing was not simply a symbolic activity; it was part of preparing food from the harvest. Boaz was actively involved in the work associated with his fields. His position as a man of wealth or standing did not remove him from responsibility and work.

Another theme is provision. Ruth had previously been gathering enough grain to survive. Boaz’s field had become a place where she experienced kindness and provision. The mention of the barley threshingfloor reminds the reader that the harvest was continuing. In the larger story, this harvest becomes connected with hope, family restoration, and a new future.

The verse therefore serves as a bridge between Ruth’s season of uncertainty and the developments that will follow. Ruth began her journey as a widow accompanying Naomi to a foreign land. She worked faithfully to provide food. She found favor in Boaz’s field. Now Naomi points out that Boaz is their relative and tells Ruth where he will be that night.

For Christians, this passage can also encourage trust in God’s providence. The book of Ruth does not usually describe God’s activity through dramatic miracles. Instead, His purposes are revealed through everyday events: returning home, entering a field, finding favor, harvesting grain, meeting a relative, and making wise decisions. The story demonstrates how seemingly ordinary events can become significant within God’s larger purposes.

Ruth 3:2 is therefore more than a statement about where Boaz was working. It introduces a major turning point in Ruth’s story. Naomi recognizes an opportunity, Ruth is about to receive further instructions, and the relationship between Ruth and Boaz is moving toward an important development.

“And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.”
