English Explanation

Naomi Had Returned from Moab

The verse begins by saying that Naomi had “come again out of the country of Moab.” This refers to Naomi’s return to Bethlehem after a difficult period in Moab. She had originally left Bethlehem with her husband Elimelech and their two sons because of famine in the land. During her time in Moab, however, Naomi experienced great personal loss. Her husband died, and later both of her sons died.

Naomi eventually decided to return to Bethlehem with Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law. Ruth chose to remain with Naomi and became part of the people of Israel.

By the time of Ruth 4, Naomi was back in Bethlehem, but her situation was still connected with the family property that had belonged to Elimelech. The mention of Naomi’s return from Moab reminds the reader of the journey that brought her to this point.

The Land Belonged to Elimelech

Boaz tells the nearer kinsman that Naomi was selling “a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s.” Elimelech had been Naomi’s husband and a member of the family connected with this property.

The land was therefore not simply a piece of property being sold by a stranger. It had a family history and was connected with the inheritance of the household. In the ancient Israelite setting, land was closely associated with family identity, inheritance, and livelihood.

This helps explain why Boaz brought the matter to the city gate. Important legal and community matters were handled publicly, with elders and witnesses present. The previous verses describe Boaz sitting at the gate and waiting for the nearer kinsman.

The Role of the Nearer Kinsman

The word “kinsman” is especially important in the story of Ruth. Boaz was related to Elimelech’s family, but there was another relative who was closer. According to the customs described in the chapter, that nearer relative had the first opportunity to respond to the matter.

Boaz therefore does not simply take the land or act secretly. He presents the situation openly and gives the nearer kinsman an opportunity to make a decision.

This demonstrates the importance of lawful order and fairness in the narrative. Boaz’s actions are deliberate and transparent.

Property and Family Responsibility

The issue of the land is closely connected with family responsibility. In the world of Ruth, land was more than an economic possession. It could represent a family’s continuing place within the community.

The mention of Elimelech’s land therefore creates a serious responsibility for the relative who is being approached. He must consider what accepting the property would involve.

The following verses reveal that the matter is more complicated than simply purchasing a field. Ruth’s future and the continuation of the family line become connected with the decision. This is why Ruth 4 should be read as a complete legal and family narrative rather than as an isolated discussion about property.

God’s Providence in Ordinary Events

Although Ruth 4:3 does not directly mention God, the larger book shows God’s providence working through these circumstances.

Naomi returned to Bethlehem after experiencing tremendous loss. Ruth, a widow from Moab, came with her. Ruth then went to glean in a field, where she encountered Boaz. Boaz showed kindness toward Ruth, and eventually the story moved toward the legal redemption process at the city gate.

None of these events appears extraordinary by itself. Yet together they form a remarkable sequence.

The verse reminds readers that God’s purposes can unfold through ordinary events such as returning home, managing property, meeting relatives, and making lawful decisions.

A Lesson About Integrity

Boaz’s approach provides an example of integrity. He does not ignore the nearer kinsman. Instead, he follows the proper process.

This is important because the story could have been handled differently. Boaz clearly had an interest in Ruth, but he did not allow personal desire to make him disregard family customs or legal responsibilities.

His conduct demonstrates patience and respect for what was right.

For believers, this can be an important spiritual lesson. Doing what is right may sometimes require patience. A desired outcome does not justify ignoring proper responsibilities.

Naomi’s Situation Was Changing

Earlier in the book, Naomi had spoken from the perspective of someone who had suffered great loss. She returned to Bethlehem with Ruth and described her life as bitter.

By Ruth 4, however, circumstances are beginning to change.

The land associated with Elimelech is now part of a legal process. Ruth’s relationship with Boaz is moving toward marriage and redemption. Naomi, who once seemed to have no future, is gradually being brought into a new chapter.

This shows an important theme of Ruth: circumstances can change in ways that people cannot see at the beginning.

The Importance of Faithfulness

The story also highlights faithfulness. Ruth remained faithful to Naomi. Boaz acted honorably toward Ruth and Naomi. The nearer kinsman was given the opportunity to fulfill his role. Each person had a responsibility to respond to the situation before them.

Faithfulness is often demonstrated through decisions that seem ordinary. Ruth’s faithfulness was shown in her daily care for Naomi. Boaz’s faithfulness was shown in his treatment of Ruth and his respect for the legal process.

Spiritual Lessons from Ruth 4:3

1. God Can Bring Hope After Loss

Naomi’s story began with grief, but her story did not end there. Her return from Moab eventually became part of a new chapter.

This encourages believers not to assume that a difficult season represents the end of God’s work.

2. Do Not Rush Important Decisions

Boaz handled the matter carefully. He gathered the appropriate person and dealt with the issue publicly.

Important matters should be approached with wisdom, patience, and honesty.

3. Family Responsibilities Matter

The verse reminds us that family relationships can involve responsibilities as well as affection. In the biblical setting, inheritance and family property carried significant importance.

4. Integrity Should Guide Our Actions

Boaz did not manipulate the situation to get what he wanted. He followed the established process.

Integrity means doing what is right even when a different approach might appear easier.

5. God Works Through Ordinary Circumstances

A parcel of land, a family conversation, and a meeting at a city gate may seem like ordinary events. Yet these events became part of the unfolding story of Ruth.

God’s providence can operate through everyday circumstances.
