English Explanation
Titus 1:5 explains why Paul left Titus in Crete. Titus had been given an important responsibility: to help establish order in the churches, address matters that were incomplete, and appoint qualified elders in each city. This verse provides an important lesson about Christian leadership, church organization, spiritual maturity, and faithful service to God.
1. “For this cause left I thee in Crete”
Paul tells Titus that he deliberately left him in Crete for a specific purpose. Titus was not simply being left behind because there was nothing else for him to do. He had been entrusted with an important ministry assignment.
Crete was an island in the Mediterranean world, and churches had been established there. However, the work of building healthy Christian communities was not finished. Titus was therefore expected to continue the work Paul had begun.
This teaches us that Christian ministry involves responsibility and commitment. Sometimes a servant of God may be called to remain in a difficult or unfinished situation because important work still needs to be accomplished.
The verse also reminds us that ministry is not always about starting something new. Often, faithful service means strengthening, correcting, organizing, and completing what has already begun.
2. “That thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting”
Paul gives Titus a practical responsibility: “set in order” the things that were incomplete.
The expression “things that are wanting” refers to matters that still needed attention. The churches in Crete needed greater organization, spiritual maturity, and qualified leadership.
This principle remains valuable for Christians today. A church or Christian community can have enthusiasm, numbers, and activity while still having areas that need improvement. Spiritual growth requires attention to doctrine, conduct, leadership, relationships, discipline, and service.
Paul did not tell Titus simply to criticize what was incomplete. He instructed him to set things in order. Christian leadership should therefore aim at restoration and strengthening rather than unnecessary conflict.
There is also a personal application. Believers can ask themselves:
- What areas of my spiritual life need to be strengthened?
- Is my understanding of Scripture growing?
- Am I becoming more faithful in prayer?
- Are my actions consistent with my faith?
- Are there responsibilities I have neglected?
- Do I need to bring greater order into my priorities?
God cares not only about what Christians begin but also about how faithfully they develop and complete their responsibilities.
3. “And ordain elders in every city”
Titus was also instructed to appoint elders. This shows that churches needed recognized spiritual leadership.
The word elders refers to leaders who were expected to guide and care for the local Christian community. The following verses in Titus 1 provide qualifications for these leaders. Therefore, this appointment was not supposed to be based merely on popularity, wealth, social influence, or personal ambition.
Spiritual leadership carries serious responsibility. A leader influences other people’s faith, conduct, understanding, and spiritual direction. For that reason, Paul immediately discusses qualities that should characterize those who serve as elders.
The wider New Testament teaching shows that Christian leaders should demonstrate integrity, self-control, faithfulness, hospitality, sound teaching, and a good reputation.
This is an important lesson for churches today: leadership should be based on character and spiritual maturity rather than simply ability or status.
4. “In every city”
Paul’s instruction was comprehensive. Titus was not told to organize only one congregation or one important location. He was instructed to appoint elders “in every city.”
This demonstrates the importance of local church leadership. Each Christian community needed responsible people who could teach God’s Word, encourage believers, guard sound doctrine, and provide spiritual care.
Healthy Christian communities need both biblical truth and responsible leadership. Organization by itself cannot produce spiritual life, but proper organization can help a church fulfill its God-given responsibilities effectively.
5. “As I had appointed thee”
Paul reminds Titus that this assignment had already been given to him. Titus was acting under Paul’s instruction and authority.
This highlights the importance of faithful obedience in Christian ministry. Titus was not free to redesign the assignment according to his personal preferences. He had been entrusted with a specific responsibility and was expected to carry it out faithfully.
The verse therefore presents Titus as a servant who had to complete an important task. His ministry required patience, wisdom, courage, discernment, and faithfulness.
Lessons from Titus 1:5
Titus 1:5 contains several practical lessons.
First, unfinished work still matters. Christians should not ignore responsibilities simply because previous work has already been done.
Second, Christian ministry requires order. God is not honored by unnecessary confusion and disorder. Churches need biblical teaching, responsible leadership, and clear spiritual direction.
Third, leadership is a serious responsibility. Those who lead others should possess spiritual maturity and good character.
Fourth, faithful servants complete their assignments. Titus was given a difficult responsibility in Crete, but Paul expected him to remain faithful to it.
Fifth, churches need qualified spiritual leaders. Strong churches require people who can teach truth, protect the congregation from false teaching, and provide godly guidance.
Titus 1:5 is therefore more than an instruction concerning an ancient church. It presents a lasting principle: God’s people should pursue spiritual maturity, biblical order, faithful leadership, and responsible service.
“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee.”
“For this cause left I thee in Crete”
“That thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting”
“And ordain elders in every city”
“In every city”
“As I had appointed thee”
