Meaning of “Little Children”

John begins with the words, “Little children.” This is a loving pastoral expression. John is not speaking harshly to frighten his readers. He is warning them as a spiritual teacher who cares about their faith.

Throughout 1 John, believers are repeatedly addressed in affectionate language. John wants them to understand the seriousness of false teaching while also reassuring them that they can remain faithful to Christ.

The expression reminds Christians that spiritual maturity involves listening carefully to God’s Word, recognizing false teaching, and remaining faithful to Jesus.

What Does “It Is the Last Time” Mean?

The phrase “it is the last time” refers to the period of history in which God’s purposes concerning Christ are unfolding. In the New Testament, the coming of Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection, and the proclamation of the Gospel mark a decisive stage in God’s plan.

John was therefore encouraging believers to understand their spiritual situation correctly. They were living in an era characterized by both the proclamation of Christ’s truth and opposition to that truth.

The statement does not give a date for Christ’s return. Instead, it emphasizes spiritual urgency and watchfulness.

Christians are called to remain faithful rather than attempting to calculate an exact timetable for future events.

What Is “Antichrist”?

The word “antichrist” is commonly understood in connection with opposition to Christ. The Greek term behind it carries the idea of being against Christ or acting in opposition to Christ.

In 1 John, the concept is particularly connected with false teaching about Jesus. John later says:

“They went out from us, but they were not of us…”
— 1 John 2:19

John’s concern is therefore not simply about a mysterious future individual. He is also addressing people who were already spreading teaching that contradicted the truth concerning Christ.

This distinction is important. The Bible contains passages that Christians have historically connected with a future final opponent of Christ, but 1 John also explicitly speaks about many antichrists already being present.

“Antichrist Shall Come”

John says that his readers had heard that “antichrist shall come.” This reflects an expectation of a future manifestation of opposition to Christ.

The verse therefore contains a future expectation. Christians should not dismiss the biblical teaching about future opposition to Christ.

At the same time, John immediately adds another important truth:

“Even now are there many antichrists.”

This means that opposition to Christ was already visible in John’s own time.

The passage consequently teaches believers to pay attention not only to future events but also to the spiritual realities occurring in their own generation.

“Many Antichrists”

The phrase “many antichrists” is one of the central ideas of this verse.

John wanted Christians to understand that opposition to Christ could appear through multiple people and teachings. False teachers could claim religious knowledge while presenting ideas that were incompatible with the Gospel.

This provides an important lesson about spiritual discernment.

A person should not accept a teaching merely because it sounds religious, confident, or impressive. Christians are encouraged to compare teaching with the truth revealed in Scripture.

The following verses make this especially clear. John speaks about those who deny the Father and the Son and warns believers about deception.

Why Does John Say This Shows “It Is the Last Time”?

John concludes:

“Whereby we know that it is the last time.”

The presence of antichrists was evidence that the believers were living in the period John describes as the “last time.”

This does not mean that John gives his readers a precise calendar date. Instead, he tells them that the appearance of opposition to Christ is consistent with the biblical expectation of the age in which they are living.

The Christian response should therefore be faithfulness rather than speculation.

Instead of becoming obsessed with identifying every political leader, celebrity, organization, or contemporary person as the antichrist, the central message of John’s letter is to remain faithful to Christ and reject teaching that contradicts Him.

A Warning Against Deception

One of the strongest themes surrounding 1 John 2:18 is deception.

John understood that false teaching could threaten the faith of believers. People could hear ideas that appeared spiritual but actually moved them away from the truth about Jesus.

That warning remains relevant as a general biblical principle. Christians encounter many different religious claims, interpretations, philosophies, and teachings. Discernment requires examining those claims carefully.

A believer should ask:

  • Does this teaching agree with Scripture?
  • What does it teach about Jesus Christ?
  • Does it preserve the truth of the Gospel?
  • Is Scripture being handled honestly?
  • Does the teaching encourage faithfulness to Christ?

These questions help believers avoid being carried away by every new religious claim.

The Relationship Between Truth and Faithfulness

The wider passage emphasizes that believers already have knowledge of the truth. John does not tell them to abandon what they received and constantly search for something completely new.

Instead, he encourages them to abide in Christ.

This is an important balance. Biblical Christianity is not simply about knowing information concerning the end times. It is about continuing faithfully in Christ.

A person can become fascinated with prophecy while neglecting prayer, obedience, love, truth, and faithfulness. John’s teaching directs attention back to Christ Himself.

The Message for Christians Today

1 John 2:18 encourages Christians today to live with spiritual awareness.

The verse reminds believers that opposition to Christ should not surprise them. False teaching is not a new phenomenon. John encountered it in the earliest Christian communities, and he warned believers to remain grounded in the truth.

The passage also encourages Christians not to live in constant fear.

The purpose of John’s warning is not to create panic. His purpose is to help believers recognize deception and remain faithful.

The Christian response to difficult times is therefore not fear-driven speculation but steadfast faith.

“Little children, it is the last time…”

“even now are there many antichrists”

“whereby we know that it is the last time.”
