Detailed Explanation in English

1 John 2:3 gives a practical way to examine whether our relationship with God is genuine. The verse does not merely speak about knowing facts about God. It speaks about knowing Him personally and allowing that relationship to influence the way we live.

John writes, “And hereby we do know that we know him.” The repetition of the word “know” is important. A person may know about someone without actually knowing that person. In the same way, someone can learn religious teachings, read Scripture, attend church, or know many facts about Jesus Christ without allowing that knowledge to transform his life. John points believers toward something deeper: a genuine relationship with God produces obedience.

The second part of the verse says, “if we keep his commandments.” The word “keep” carries the idea of observing, guarding, or faithfully following. John is therefore connecting our profession of faith with our daily conduct. A person who truly desires to follow Christ should also desire to live according to His teachings.

This does not mean that Christians become completely sinless. The surrounding passage makes this clear. In 1 John 1:8–9, John explains that believers must acknowledge their sins and depend upon God’s forgiveness and cleansing. Therefore, 1 John 2:3 should not be understood as teaching that a person must achieve perfect obedience before he can know God.

Instead, the verse describes the direction of a believer’s life. Genuine faith produces a desire to obey God. When a Christian fails, he does not need to pretend that the failure did not happen. He can confess his sin, seek forgiveness, and continue walking in obedience.

Knowing God Is More Than Knowing Facts

The Bible frequently presents knowing God as something relational and active. It involves trusting Him, loving Him, listening to His Word, and allowing His will to shape our decisions.

Imagine someone saying, “I know this person very well,” while consistently ignoring everything that person has asked of them. Such a claim would be difficult to demonstrate. John makes a similar point spiritually: if someone claims to know God but has no interest in following His commandments, there is a contradiction between the person’s words and conduct.

This does not mean that every Christian will behave perfectly. Rather, the important question is whether obedience matters to the person.

A believer may struggle with temptation, make mistakes, become discouraged, or sometimes fall into sin. Yet the believer’s heart should continually turn back toward God. The desire to obey becomes evidence that the relationship is real.

Obedience as Evidence of Faith

The verse says, “hereby we do know.” In other words, obedience provides evidence. John is not giving believers a method for earning God’s love. Instead, he is describing a practical indication of a genuine relationship with Him.

Christian obedience is therefore not supposed to be merely external. It begins with the heart. A person can follow rules outwardly while having no love for God. Biblical obedience is different because it grows from faith and love.

Jesus Himself connected love and obedience. In John 14:15, He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” This shows that obedience is closely connected with love for Christ.

When someone loves God, His commandments are not viewed simply as restrictions. They become guidance for living in a way that honors Him.

What Does “Keep His Commandments” Mean?

The commandments of Christ include teachings about love, forgiveness, humility, truthfulness, mercy, purity, faithfulness, and our relationship with God and other people.

For example, Christians are called to love others rather than respond to hatred with hatred. They are instructed to forgive, speak truthfully, care for people in need, avoid hypocrisy, and place their trust in God.

Therefore, keeping God’s commandments affects ordinary life.

It affects:

  • How we speak to our family.
  • How we treat friends and strangers.
  • How we respond when someone hurts us.
  • How honestly we behave when nobody is watching.
  • How we use our time and possessions.
  • How we respond to temptation.
  • How we treat people who disagree with us.
  • Whether we are willing to forgive.
  • Whether we seek to live according to Scripture.

The verse consequently moves Christianity beyond words. Faith becomes visible through conduct.

The Importance of Consistency

1 John 2:3 also challenges hypocrisy. It is easy to say, “I know God,” but our actions should increasingly support that confession.

Christian maturity involves bringing our beliefs and behavior closer together.

This does not happen instantly. Spiritual growth is a process. A new believer may have many areas of life that still need to change. Even mature Christians continue to learn and grow.

The important point is that the believer does not deliberately reject God’s will as a way of life. Instead, he seeks God’s help to become more obedient.

When failure occurs, the answer is not despair. The Christian message includes repentance, forgiveness, restoration, and growth.

Obedience Does Not Earn Salvation

One important distinction should be made. 1 John 2:3 does not teach that people purchase salvation by performing enough good works.

The wider teaching of the New Testament emphasizes salvation through God’s grace and faith in Jesus Christ. Good works and obedience are the fruit that should follow genuine faith.

A useful way to understand this is:

We do not obey God in order to make Him love us; we obey because we have come to love and trust Him.

Obedience is therefore evidence of a transformed life, not a payment for God’s grace.

A Message for Daily Christian Life

This verse is highly practical. It encourages believers to examine their lives honestly.

Instead of asking only, “Do I say that I know God?” we can also ask:

“Is my life being shaped by what God has commanded?”

That question can lead to meaningful spiritual reflection.

If we find areas where we are disobeying God, we should not hide them. We should bring them before Him, confess our wrongdoing, seek forgiveness, and make changes where possible.

The goal is not perfection through human strength. The goal is faithful growth through God’s grace.

“And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”

“if we keep his commandments”

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
