English Explanation of Genesis 45:19
1. “Now thou art commanded, this do ye”
The verse begins with an important command. Joseph tells his brothers that they should follow the instructions that have been given to them.
This was not merely a casual invitation. Pharaoh had authorized the family to come to Egypt, and Joseph was communicating the seriousness of that invitation.
Joseph’s position in Egypt meant that he had authority to arrange practical matters for his family. His brothers no longer needed to wonder whether they would be accepted. They had been invited to come.
This is significant because the family had previously experienced separation, fear, and uncertainty. Now there was a clear path toward reunion.
2. “Take you wagons out of the land of Egypt”
The wagons were provided so that Jacob’s family could make the journey from Canaan to Egypt more easily.
This was especially important because the family included children, women, and an elderly father. Traveling during a famine would have been difficult, and Joseph wanted to make sure that his family had the necessary transportation.
The wagons therefore represent practical provision. Joseph did not simply say, “Come to Egypt.” He made arrangements to help them get there.
This gives an important lesson about caring for others. Genuine care is often demonstrated through practical help. Words of love are valuable, but assistance with real needs can make those words meaningful.
3. “For your little ones, and for your wives”
Joseph specifically mentions the little ones and wives.
The journey was not only about the brothers themselves. Their entire households were involved. Joseph understood that moving a large family required special consideration for those who might find the journey difficult.
This also shows the importance of family responsibility. Joseph wanted the entire family to be brought safely to Egypt.
The mention of children is especially meaningful because the famine could have placed families under enormous pressure. By providing transportation, Joseph helped protect them from unnecessary hardship.
4. “And bring your father, and come”
Joseph’s desire to see his father Jacob is one of the emotional themes running throughout this chapter.
For many years, Jacob had believed that Joseph was dead. Joseph had been separated from his father because of the actions of his brothers. Now, however, the situation had completely changed.
Joseph was not satisfied with merely seeing his brothers. He wanted his father to come to Egypt so that their family could be reunited.
The words “bring your father, and come” express urgency and affection. Joseph wanted Jacob to experience the restoration personally.
This reminds readers that family relationships can experience deep wounds, but circumstances can change in unexpected ways. Joseph’s story demonstrates how a painful separation eventually became an opportunity for reunion.
5. “Also regard not your stuff”
Joseph tells his brothers not to be overly concerned about their belongings.
This does not necessarily mean that possessions have no value. Rather, the situation demanded that they prioritize the journey and the opportunity being offered to them.
They were entering a new chapter of life. They did not need to become so attached to their existing possessions that they refused to move.
Joseph’s statement also demonstrates the generosity behind Pharaoh’s invitation. The family was being welcomed into Egypt with the assurance that they would have access to good resources.
There is a spiritual lesson here about priorities. Material possessions can be useful, but they should not become more important than family, relationships, or God’s purposes.
6. “For the good of all the land of Egypt is yours”
This is one of the strongest expressions of generosity in the passage.
Joseph assures his brothers that the good land of Egypt is available to them. Egypt was in a severe famine, yet Joseph’s family would receive special provision.
This statement shows how dramatically Joseph’s circumstances had changed. Earlier in Genesis, Joseph had been rejected and sold by his brothers. Now he was in a position where he could provide for the same family that had once caused him great suffering.
The contrast is remarkable.
Joseph did not use his authority merely for personal revenge. Instead, he used his position to help his family survive.
This connects with the larger message of Joseph’s story: God can work through circumstances that appear hopeless and can ultimately bring preservation and blessing from them.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 45:19
1. God can bring restoration after separation
Joseph and Jacob had experienced years of separation. Yet the story was moving toward reunion.
This encourages readers not to assume that a painful chapter is necessarily the end of the story.
2. Provision can come through unexpected people
Joseph became the person who provided for his family during famine. The same brothers who had harmed him eventually depended upon him.
The story shows that circumstances can change dramatically.
3. Caring for family includes practical help
Joseph provided wagons because he understood that his family needed more than an invitation. They needed practical assistance.
Love and responsibility are often demonstrated through concrete actions.
4. Possessions should not control our decisions
Joseph told his brothers not to focus excessively on their belongings. Their family and their future were more important.
The passage encourages healthy priorities rather than excessive attachment to material things.
5. Position can be used for good
Joseph possessed significant authority in Egypt. Instead of using his position for revenge, he used it to preserve his family.
His example demonstrates that influence and authority can become opportunities to help others.
