“Whosoever is born of God”
The phrase “born of God” describes spiritual regeneration. It means that a person has received new spiritual life from God. Christianity is not simply about changing outward behavior or following a collection of religious rules. According to John, genuine faith in Christ brings an inward transformation.
Being born of God changes the believer’s relationship with sin. Before spiritual transformation, sin can dominate a person’s desires and choices. But the person who has received new life from God begins to see sin differently. Instead of treating sin as something normal and acceptable, the believer develops a desire to live according to God’s will.
This new birth is therefore connected with a changed life. The believer’s identity is no longer defined by rebellion against God but by belonging to God.
“Doth not commit sin”
The statement that someone born of God “doth not commit sin” can sound absolute in English. However, the broader teaching of 1 John helps us understand John’s meaning.
In the same letter, John acknowledges that believers can sin. He writes that if people claim they have no sin, they deceive themselves. He also points believers toward Jesus Christ as the advocate and the sacrifice for sins.
Therefore, 1 John 3:9 should not be understood as saying that a Christian never makes a mistake or never falls into temptation.
Rather, John is describing a pattern or practice of sin. A person genuinely born of God does not make sin the settled direction of his or her life. Sin may occur, but sin is no longer something the believer willingly embraces as a permanent way of living.
The difference is important. There is a difference between falling into sin and deliberately making sin one’s lifestyle.
“For his seed remaineth in him”
The word “seed” is an important part of this verse. John uses this picture to describe the spiritual life that comes from God and remains in the believer.
Just as a seed contains life that can produce growth, God’s life within a believer produces spiritual change. The believer does not remain spiritually unchanged after being born of God.
This does not mean that Christian growth happens instantly or that every believer becomes spiritually mature immediately. Spiritual growth is a process. Christians continue learning, repenting, resisting temptation, and becoming more like Christ.
The important point is that God’s work within the believer produces a new direction.
The “seed” therefore points to the continuing work of God that makes a life of deliberate, unrepentant sin inconsistent with the believer’s new identity.
“He cannot sin”
The words “he cannot sin” require careful interpretation. John is not contradicting his earlier teaching that believers may sin. Instead, the statement emphasizes the incompatibility between being born of God and living continuously under the control of sin.
A person who has genuinely received new life from God cannot simply embrace sin as the defining principle of life while claiming that nothing has changed.
This is similar to John’s contrast throughout his letter between light and darkness, righteousness and unrighteousness, love and hatred, truth and deception.
John is concerned with the direction and character of a person’s life.
A Christian may stumble, but he does not make peace with sin. He may fall, but he seeks forgiveness and restoration. He may struggle with temptation, but he does not regard rebellion against God as his rightful identity.
“Because he is born of God”
John returns to the central reason: “because he is born of God.”
The transformed life is not produced merely through human determination. It is the result of God’s work.
A person born of God begins to demonstrate evidence of that new birth through righteousness, obedience, love, and a changed attitude toward sin.
This means that Christian living is not simply an attempt to appear religious. The outward life is connected with an inward spiritual transformation.
What Does 1 John 3:9 Teach About Sin?
This verse teaches several important truths about sin.
First, sin should never be treated as insignificant. God’s people are called to take sin seriously.
Second, genuine spiritual transformation produces changes in behavior and desires. A person cannot claim to have a completely unchanged relationship with God while deliberately choosing a life centered on sin.
Third, believers should not become discouraged when they recognize their weaknesses. The Christian message includes forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Recognizing sin should lead to repentance rather than hopelessness.
Fourth, spiritual growth takes time. A believer may experience struggles and temptations while continuing to grow in obedience.
Therefore, 1 John 3:9 should encourage believers to examine the direction of their lives. Is sin something they are intentionally embracing, or are they fighting against it and seeking to follow God?

3. Do not use grace as an excuse for sin
God’s forgiveness is not permission to deliberately continue in rebellion. Grace leads a believer toward transformation.
4. Look for evidence of spiritual transformation
John repeatedly connects genuine faith with a changed life. Love, righteousness, obedience, and truth are important signs of spiritual life.
5. Return to God when you fall
A believer’s struggle with sin should lead to repentance rather than despair. The Christian should confess sin, seek forgiveness, and continue walking with God.

“Whosoever is born of God”

“For his seed remaineth in him”
“Seed” یعنی “بیج” ایک خوبصورت روحانی تصویر پیش کرتا ہے۔ جیسے ایک بیج کے اندر زندگی موجود ہوتی ہے اور مناسب حالات میں وہ بڑھتا ہے، اسی طرح God کی طرف سے ملنے والی روحانی زندگی انسان کے اندر تبدیلی پیدا کرتی ہے۔
یہ تبدیلی صرف ظاہری نہیں ہوتی۔ انسان کی سوچ، ترجیحات اور خواہشات آہستہ آہستہ God کے کلام کے مطابق تبدیل ہونے لگتی ہیں۔
اگر کسی شخص کی زندگی میں کوئی تبدیلی نہ ہو اور وہ مسلسل اور جان بوجھ کر گناہ کو اختیار کرتا رہے، تو 1 یوحنا 3:9 اسے سنجیدگی سے اپنی روحانی حالت کا جائزہ لینے کی دعوت دیتا ہے۔
“He cannot sin”

1. گناہ کو معمولی نہ سمجھیں
مسیحی کو گناہ کے ساتھ سمجھوتہ نہیں کرنا چاہیے۔ God پاک ہے، اس لیے His people کو بھی پاکیزگی کی طرف بڑھنا چاہیے۔
2. روحانی تبدیلی حقیقی ہونی چاہیے
صرف زبان سے ایمان کا دعویٰ کافی نہیں۔ حقیقی ایمان زندگی میں تبدیلی پیدا کرتا ہے۔
3. کمزوری کے وقت مایوس نہ ہوں
اگر ایک مسیحی اپنی کمزوری دیکھتا ہے تو اسے مایوس ہونے کے بجائے God کی طرف رجوع کرنا چاہیے۔ توبہ، دعا اور Jesus Christ پر ایمان کے ذریعے وہ دوبارہ درست راستے پر چل سکتا ہے۔
4. God کی نئی زندگی گناہ سے نفرت پیدا کرتی ہے
God سے پیدا ہونے والا شخص گناہ کو محبت سے قبول نہیں کرتا۔ اس کے اندر righteousness کی خواہش بڑھتی ہے۔
5. زندگی کی سمت کا جائزہ لیتے رہیں
ہر شخص کو خود سے پوچھنا چاہیے: میری زندگی کس سمت جا رہی ہے؟ کیا میں گناہ کو جان بوجھ کر اپنا رہا ہوں، یا میں God کے ساتھ چلنے اور اپنی زندگی کو تبدیل کرنے کی کوشش کر رہا ہوں؟
اختتامی پیغام
1 یوحنا 3:9 ایک طرف گناہ کے بارے میں سنجیدہ تنبیہ ہے اور دوسری طرف God کی تبدیل کرنے والی قدرت کے بارے میں حوصلہ افزا پیغام بھی ہے۔

اس آیت کا مقصد یہ نہیں کہ ہر مسیحی اپنی ہر غلطی کی وجہ سے خود کو God سے دور سمجھے۔ بلکہ مقصد یہ ہے کہ انسان اپنی زندگی کے مجموعی رخ کو دیکھے۔ اگر وہ گناہ کے ساتھ محبت اور مستقل وابستگی کے بجائے توبہ، ایمان، obedience اور righteousness کی طرف بڑھ رہا ہے تو یہ روحانی نئی زندگی کے اہم آثار ہیں۔
