Detailed Explanation (English)

Hebrews 11:26 offers a powerful perspective on faith, value, and sacrifice through the life of Moses. Positioned within the famous “Hall of Faith” chapter in the Book of Hebrews, this verse highlights the conscious, spiritual choice Moses made when he turned his back on the power and prosperity of Pharaoh’s court to identify with the suffering people of God.

                              The Heavenly Reward

1. “Esteeming the Reproach of Christ”

The word “esteeming” (from the Greek hegeomai) means to consider, calculate, weigh, or account. Moses carefully evaluated his options: remaining a prince in Egypt with unlimited status and wealth, or bearing the disgrace, hardship, and persecution associated with God’s chosen people.

The phrase “reproach of Christ” connects Moses’ ancient suffering to the overarching redemptive purpose of Christ. Centuries before Jesus was born, Moses suffered disgrace for the sake of God’s Messiah and God’s holy cause. To choose affliction alongside God’s oppressed people was to share in the very reproach, humiliation, and suffering that the Messiah Himself would endure.

2. “Greater Riches Than the Treasures in Egypt”

Egypt in biblical history represents the pinnacle of human achievement, worldly security, intellectual glory, and vast financial wealth. As an adopted prince of Pharaoh, Moses had immediate access to royal power and luxury.

Yet, under divine conviction, Moses calculated that suffering for the purpose of God was far more valuable than all the physical treasures of Egypt combined. He recognized that worldly riches are temporary and fading, whereas spiritual devotion carries everlasting weight.

3. “For He Had Respect Unto the Recompence of the Reward”

The phrase “had respect unto” means to fix one’s gaze intentionally on a distant goal. Moses did not make a blind or foolish sacrifice; he fixed his focus on eternal reality.

The “recompence of the reward” speaks of God’s ultimate heavenly compensation. Faith gave Moses the spiritual vision to see past immediate physical discomfort and envision eternal glory. He recognized that suffering for God temporarily yields eternal life, divine favor, and heavenly joy.
