English Explanation

1. The Context of the Verse

Genesis 43 takes place during a serious famine. Jacob’s family had already used the grain they had brought back from Egypt, so they needed to return for more. However, there was a problem. Joseph, who was governing the distribution of grain in Egypt, had previously instructed his brothers that they must not return without their youngest brother.

The brothers now needed to explain this condition to their father. They reminded Jacob that the Egyptian ruler had said, “Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.”

The words were not merely a casual request. They were presented as a firm requirement for another journey to Egypt.

2. “Your Youngest Brother”

The phrase “your youngest brother” refers to Benjamin. At this point in the story, Benjamin had remained in Canaan with Jacob.

Benjamin was particularly important to Jacob because he was the younger son of Rachel. Jacob had already experienced the loss of Joseph, who was also Rachel’s son. From Jacob’s perspective, allowing Benjamin to travel to a foreign land created another frightening possibility of loss.

This helps explain why Jacob hesitated so strongly when his sons asked him to send Benjamin with them.

3. Joseph’s Hidden Purpose

Although Joseph’s brothers did not know his true identity, Joseph had a purpose in requiring Benjamin to come to Egypt. He wanted to know more about his brothers and the condition of his family.

Years earlier, Joseph’s brothers had sold him into slavery. Now they stood before Joseph without recognizing him. The circumstances had completely changed. Joseph was no longer the helpless young man they had betrayed; he had become a powerful ruler in Egypt.

The requirement concerning Benjamin became an important part of the process through which Joseph’s family would eventually be reunited.

4. A Difficult Choice for Jacob

Jacob’s decision was emotionally difficult. On one side was the need for food because of the famine. On the other side was his fear concerning Benjamin.

This situation illustrates how difficult circumstances can force people to make decisions they would rather avoid. Jacob could not simply ignore the famine. His family needed food. At the same time, he deeply feared sending Benjamin away.

The story shows that human beings may sometimes struggle to see what God is accomplishing while they are living through painful circumstances.

5. The Importance of Trust

The passage also points toward the importance of trust. Jacob had experienced many painful events, and his understanding of the situation was incomplete. He did not yet know that Joseph was alive and that God had preserved him in Egypt for a greater purpose.

From Jacob’s perspective, circumstances appeared threatening. From the larger perspective of the biblical story, God was bringing about the preservation and restoration of Jacob’s family.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: people may not always understand the purpose behind their circumstances immediately. Faith involves continuing to trust God even when the complete picture is not yet visible.

6. Family Responsibility

Genesis 43 also highlights the responsibility of family members toward one another. The brothers knew that Benjamin had to accompany them if they were going to obtain more grain.

Their earlier actions toward Joseph had caused enormous pain within the family. As the story continues, they are gradually confronted with the consequences of their past actions and are placed in situations that test their character.

The journey toward Egypt therefore becomes more than a journey to obtain food. It becomes part of a larger process of reconciliation and transformation.

7. The Famine as a Turning Point

The famine was a crisis, but it also became a turning point in the lives of Joseph’s family.

Without the famine, Joseph’s brothers might never have returned to Egypt. Without their return, Benjamin might not have come before Joseph. Without Benjamin’s arrival, the events leading toward Joseph’s revelation and the eventual reunion of the family would have unfolded differently.

The biblical narrative demonstrates how God can work through circumstances that initially appear tragic or threatening.

8. God’s Providence

One of the major themes surrounding Joseph’s life is God’s providence. Joseph suffered betrayal, slavery, imprisonment, and separation from his family, yet these events eventually became connected to God’s purpose of preserving many lives during the famine.

Genesis 43:5 sits in the middle of that unfolding story.

The brothers believed they were simply dealing with a powerful Egyptian ruler’s demand. They did not understand that the ruler was their own brother Joseph, and they did not yet know how close they were to a dramatic family reunion.

The verse therefore reminds readers that God’s work may be progressing even when people cannot recognize it.

“And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.”
