2 Timothy Chapter 4
Verse 2
Verse: Preach the word be instant in season out of season reprove rebuke exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine
English Explanation
Paul gives Timothy an urgent command to proclaim the Gospel faithfully. “In season and out of season” means being ready to preach when it is popular and convenient, as well as when it is difficult, hostile, or unwelcome. The minister’s toolset must include correction (reprove), warning against sin (rebuke), and encouragement (exhort). Crucially, this must be done with immense patience (longsuffering) and careful teaching (doctrine), ensuring that the correction leads to spiritual growth rather than resentment.
Verse 3
Verse: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears
English Explanation
Paul prophesies a cultural shift where people will reject wholesome, convicting truth. Instead of seeking spiritual transformation, they will look for teachers who tell them exactly what they want to hear. “Itching ears” describes a desire for novelty, entertainment, and validation of their worldly lifestyles. People will accumulate teachers who accommodate their personal desires rather than challenging them with the cross.
Verse 4
Verse: And they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned unto fables
English Explanation
When people reject biblical truth, they do not end up believing nothing; instead, they believe anything. This verse highlights the danger of spiritual drift. Having turned their backs on historical, revealed divine truth, they willingly fall prey to myths, human philosophies, and fabricated spiritual ideas (fables) that carry no real power to save or sanctify.
Verse 5
Verse: But watch thou in all things endure afflictions do the work of an evangelist make full proof of thy ministry
English Explanation
In contrast to the compromised teachers and drifting crowds, Timothy is called to stay sober, alert, and clear-headed (“watch thou in all things”). He must accept hardship as a natural part of the calling, actively share the Gospel with unbelievers (the work of an evangelist), and completely fulfill every obligation of his God-given calling, leaving no duty neglected.
Verse 6
Verse: For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand
English Explanation
Paul recognizes that his execution under Emperor Nero is imminent. He views his upcoming death not as a tragedy or defeat, but as a drink offering poured out to God on an altar. The word “departure” refers to a ship untying its ropes to set sail or a soldier striking camp, symbolizing his transition from this earthly life to eternity.
Verse 7
Verse: I have fought a good fight I have finished my course I have kept the faith
English Explanation
Looking back on his life, Paul uses athletic and military metaphors. He has fought the spiritual battle against darkness, he has run the specific race assigned to him by God without quitting, and he has guarded the pure doctrine committed to his trust. It is a triumphant declaration of lifelong faithfulness.
Verse 8
Verse: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing
English Explanation
Paul looks forward to his eternal reward: the “crown of righteousness.” Unlike the perishable wreaths given to Roman athletes, this crown is given by Christ, the truly righteous Judge. Strikingly, Paul notes that this reward is not exclusive to apostles; it belongs to every believer who lives in eager, loving expectation of Christ’s return.
Verse 9
Verse: Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me
English Explanation
Despite his heavenly focus, Paul felt deep human isolation in the cold Roman dungeon. He requests Timothy to make every effort to travel to Rome quickly before time runs out.
Verse 10
Verse: For Demas hath forsaken me having loved this present world and is departed unto Thessalonica Crescens to Galatia Titus unto Dalmatia
English Explanation
Paul shares his heartbreak over Demas, a former co-worker who abandoned him because he loved the comfort and pleasures of the immediate world more than the hardships of the Gospel. Meanwhile, other companions left for legitimate ministry assignments: Crescens to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia.
Verse 11
Verse: Only Luke is with me Take Mark and bring him with thee for he is profitable to me for the ministry
English Explanation
Luke, the beloved physician, is Paul’s sole remaining companion in Rome. Interestingly, Paul asks for John Mark—the very man Paul had refused to travel with years earlier (Acts 15). This demonstrates beautiful Christian reconciliation and restoration, acknowledging Mark’s renewed value to the ministry.
Verse 12
Verse: And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus
English Explanation
Paul mentions sending Tychicus to Ephesus. This was likely to relieve Timothy of his pastoral duties there, allowing Timothy the freedom to leave for Rome to visit Paul.
Verse 13
Verse: The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus when thou comest bring with thee and the books but especially the parchments
English Explanation
This practical request reveals Paul’s human vulnerabilities and intellectual needs. He asks for his heavy cloak to endure the damp prison winter, his books (likely papyrus scrolls), and the parchments (which were probably copies of Old Testament Scriptures or legal documents).
Verse 14
Verse: Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil the Lord reward him according to his works
English Explanation
Paul warns of a specific adversary, Alexander the coppersmith, who caused severe harm to Paul’s ministry. Rather than seeking personal revenge, Paul leaves justice in the hands of God, confident that the Lord will judge righteously.
Verse 15
Verse: Of whom be thou ware also for he hath greatly withstood our words
English Explanation
Timothy is explicitly warned to remain cautious around Alexander, indicating that this man remained an active threat who fiercely opposed the apostolic message.
Verse 16
Verse: At my first answer no man stood with me but all men forsook me I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge
English Explanation
During his first legal defense in Rome, no earthly friends stood by Paul out of fear of Roman persecution. Imitating the grace of Jesus and Stephen, Paul harbors no bitterness and prays that God will forgive them for abandoning him.
Verse 17
Verse: Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me and strengthened me that by me the preaching might be fully known and that all the Gentiles might hear and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion
Explanation
Though abandoned by men, Paul was never alone; Jesus Christ stood by his side, providing supernatural strength. This presence allowed Paul to boldly proclaim the Gospel to the Roman court, fulfilling his mission to reach the Gentiles. “Delivered out of the mouth of the lion” points to escaping immediate execution or spiritual defeat.
Verse 18
Verse: And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom to whom be glory for ever and ever Amen
English Explanation
Paul declares absolute confidence in God’s ultimate protection. This deliverance does not necessarily mean escaping physical death, but rather being kept safe from spiritual failure, apostasy, and the traps of the enemy, ensuring his safe entry into the heavenly kingdom.
Verse 19
Verse: Salute Prisca and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus
English Explanation
Paul sends warm personal greetings to his longtime faithful ministry partners, Priscilla (Prisca) and Aquila, along with the loyal family of Onesiphorus, who had previously refreshed Paul in his chains.
Verse 20
Verse: Erastus abode at Corinth but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick
English Explanation
Paul shares updates on mutual friends: Erastus remained in Corinth, while Trophimus had to be left behind in Miletus due to illness. This shows that even during the apostolic age, physical healing was subject to God’s sovereign will, not the random whim of human ministers.
Verse 21
Verse: Do thy diligence to come before winter Eubulus greeteth thee and Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brethren
English Explanation
Paul renews his urge for Timothy to arrive before winter, when navigation across the Mediterranean would freeze or become too dangerous. He also conveys greetings from local Roman believers who remained faithful.
Verse 22
Verse: The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit Grace be with you Amen (The second epistle unto Timotheus ordained the first bishop of the church of the Ephesians was written from Rome when Paul was brought before Nero the second time)
English Explanation
Paul concludes his final letter with a beautiful dual blessing: focused first on Timothy’s individual spirit for internal strength, and then expanding (“with you” plural) to include the whole congregation. The traditional postscript notes his location in Rome under Nero’s reign.
Titus Chapter 1
Verse 1
Verse: Paul a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness
English Explanation
Paul introduces himself by his dual identity: a humble slave (servant) of God and an authorized representative (apostle) of Jesus Christ. His mission is centered on building up the faith of God’s chosen people and leading them to an accurate knowledge of biblical truth—a truth designed to produce genuine, holy living (godliness).
Verse 2
Verse: In hope of eternal life which God that cannot lie promised before the world began
English Explanation
Christian ministry is anchored in the absolute certainty of eternal life. This hope is not a wishful desire but a guaranteed reality based on the unchanging character of God, who is inherently incapable of lying, and who decreed this redemptive promise before time even entered existence.
Verse 3
Verse: But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour
English Explanation
At the perfect moment in human history, God revealed His eternal plan through the proclamation of His Word. Paul asserts that his personal preaching ministry was not a human choice, but a stewardship directly commanded by God our Savior.
Verse 4
Verse: To Titus mine own son after the common faith Grace mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour
English Explanation
Paul addresses Titus, his spiritual son whom he mentored in their shared Christian faith. He blesses him with three foundational spiritual gifts: grace (unmerited favor), mercy (compassion for weakness), and peace (reconciliation), originating equally from God the Father and Jesus Christ.
Verse 5
Verse: For this cause left I thee in Crete that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting and ordain elders in every city as I had appointed thee
English Explanation
Paul states the specific reason Titus was stationed on the island of Crete: to correct organizational deficiencies in the young churches and to ordain qualified spiritual leaders (elders) in every city. This highlights the necessity of order, leadership, and structure in maintaining sound local congregations.
