Verse-by-Verse Commentary
Revelation 2:23
Verse: And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works
English Explanation
This verse emphasizes the absolute sovereignty and omniscience of Jesus Christ. The phrase “kill her children with death” signifies a severe, unavoidable divine judgment against those who follow false doctrines (specifically referencing the followers of “Jezebel” in Thyatira). “Reins and hearts” is an archaic expression meaning the innermost thoughts, motives, and emotions. Christ asserts that nothing is hidden from Him; He evaluates the true intentions of the heart and promises impartial justice, rewarding or punishing everyone strictly according to their actual deeds and faithfulness.
Revelation 2:24
Verse: But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira as many as have not this doctrine and which have not known the depths of Satan as they speak I will put upon you none other burden
English Explanation
Christ addresses the faithful remnant in the city of Thyatira who have rejected the corrupt, heretical teachings prevalent in their congregation. “The depths of Satan” refers to heretical claims that one needed to experience or understand evil deeply to overcome it, or perhaps gnostic philosophies of the time. To those who remained pure and did not indulge in these spiritual compromises, the Lord offers comfort, stating He will impose no extra rules or spiritual burdens beyond remaining faithful.
Revelation 2:25
Verse: But that which ye have already hold fast till I come
English Explanation
A direct, urgent command to the faithful believers. Christ instructs them to preserve, protect, and firmly cling to the true faith, love, charity, and sound doctrine they already possess. They must endure and resist moral and spiritual compromise until His final return (the Second Coming), emphasizing perseverance as a core Christian duty.
Revelation 2:26
Verse: And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations
English Explanation
This verse introduces the reward for the “overcomer”—the person who successfully resists sin, worldly pressures, and false teachings until the very end of their life or the age. Christ promises that those who remain dedicated to His commands will share in His future messianic rule, granting them spiritual authority and governance over the nations in the coming Kingdom.
Revelation 2:27
Verse: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my Father
English Explanation
Drawing directly from Psalm 2, this verse describes the firm, unyielding justice of Christ’s millennial reign, which He will share with His faithful followers. The “rod of iron” symbolizes unbendable justice and absolute authority, before which evil and rebellious nations will be completely shattered like fragile clay pottery. This authority is delegated directly from God the Father to Christ, who then shares it with His saints.
Revelation 2:28
Verse: And I will give him the morning star
English Explanation
The “morning star” is a beautiful symbol of hope, light, and the dawn of a new era. In Revelation 22:16, Jesus identifies Himself as the “bright and morning star.” Therefore, this promise means that overcomers will receive Christ Himself, enjoying intimate fellowship with Him, and sharing in His heavenly glory and radiance.
Revelation 2:29
Verse: He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches
English Explanation
This is a universal call to spiritual alertness repeated throughout the letters to the seven churches. It implies that while the message was historically delivered to specific congregations, its spiritual truths and warnings apply to every individual believer and church across all generations who are willing to listen and obey the Holy Spirit.
Revelation 3:1
Verse: And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars I know thy works that thou hast a name that thou livest and art dead
English Explanation
Christ addresses the leader (angel) of the church in Sardis, introducing Himself as the one who holds the fullness of the Holy Spirit (the seven Spirits) and controls the church’s leadership (the seven stars). He delivers a chilling diagnosis: Sardis had an excellent reputation among men for being active and vibrant (“a name that thou livest”), but in reality, God saw them as spiritually bankrupt and stagnant (“art dead”).
Revelation 3:2
Verse: Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die for I have not found thy works perfect before God
English Explanation
The church is commanded to wake up from its spiritual slumber and become vigilant. Even though they are near death, a small spark of faith remains, and they must revive and strengthen it before it burns out completely. Christ notes that their deeds are “not perfect” (unfulfilled or hollow) in the eyes of God, lacking the right motives and complete obedience.
Revelation 3:3
Verse: Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and repent If therefore thou shalt not watch I will come on thee as a thief and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee
English Explanation
Christ provides a roadmap for spiritual restoration: remember the gospel joyfully received at the beginning, safeguard that truth, and turn away from current sins (repent). If they fail to become spiritually alert, Christ warns that judgment will catch them completely off guard, coming suddenly and unexpectedly like a thief in the night.
Revelation 3:4
Verse: Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy
English Explanation
Even in a spiritually dying church like Sardis, God acknowledges a faithful minority (“a few names”) who refused to compromise with the sinful, pagan culture around them (“have not defiled their garments”). Because of their faithfulness and reliance on Christ’s righteousness, they are promised the honor of walking intimately with Jesus, clothed in white robes symbolizing purity, victory, and worthiness.
Revelation 3:5
Verse: He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels
English Explanation
Three glorious promises are given to the victorious believer: 1) They will be clothed in permanent white robes of victory. 2) Their citizenship in eternity is secure, as Christ promises never to erase their name from the Book of Life. 3) Christ will personally and proudly acknowledge them as His own before God the Father and the heavenly hosts.
Revelation 3:6
Verse: He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches
English Explanation
A repetition of the divine warning to listen deeply. This serves as a transition, reminding everyone that the spiritual lessons drawn from the failure and hope of Sardis are highly relevant to all believers everywhere.
Revelation 3:7
Verse: And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write These things saith he that is holy he that is true he that hath the key of David he that openeth and no man shutteth and shutteth and no man openeth
English Explanation
Christ addresses the faithful church of Philadelphia. He identifies Himself by His ultimate attributes: completely holy and perfectly true. The “key of David” signifies His absolute sovereign control over the Kingdom of God. What He opens (opportunities for ministry, salvation, entry into the Kingdom), no human or demonic force can close, and what He closes is sealed forever.
Revelation 3:8
Verse: I know thy works behold I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied my name
English Explanation
Christ commends Philadelphia, a church that may have been small in size or lacking material wealth and worldly influence (“thou hast a little strength”). Despite their limitations, they remained absolutely obedient to the scriptures and loyal to Jesus under persecution. Because of this, Christ rewards them with an “open door” of spiritual opportunities and divine favor that no enemy can take away.
Revelation 3:9
Verse: Behold I will make them of the synagogue of Satan which say they are Jews and are not but do lie behold I will make them to come and worship before thy feet and to know that I have loved thee
English Explanation
The church faced intense opposition from hypocritical religious groups who claimed to be God’s chosen people but were actually doing the work of the devil (“synagogue of Satan”). Christ promises a complete vindication for His humble followers: these persecutors will eventually acknowledge their error, bow before the believers in submission, and realize that the love and approval of God belong to the true followers of Jesus.
Revelation 3:10
Verse: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation which shall come upon all the world to try them that dwell upon the earth
English Explanation
Because the Philadelphian believers endured trials patiently without giving up, Christ offers a powerful promise of protection. He pledges to safeguard them from the “hour of temptation” (a period of intense global tribulation and divine testing) meant to judge the unrepentant world (“them that dwell upon the earth”). This highlights God’s faithfulness to shield His loyal children.
Revelation 3:11
Verse: Behold I come quickly hold that fast which thou hast that no man take thy crown
English Explanation
Christ reminds them that His return is imminent (“I come quickly”), urging them to maintain their spiritual stamina. The command to “hold fast” is a call to protect their current faith, love, and devotion so that they do not stumble at the finish line and forfeit the eternal reward or “crown” prepared for victorious believers.
Revelation 3:12
Verse: Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God and he shall go no more out and I will write upon him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God which is new Jerusalem which cometh down out of heaven from my God and I will write upon him my new name
English Explanation
The victorious believer is promised ultimate stability, permanence, and identity. A “pillar” represents strength and absolute security within God’s eternal presence; unlike earthly citizens who might flee due to earthquakes or wars, they will “go no more out.” Furthermore, bearing the names of God, the New Jerusalem, and Christ’s new name signifies that the overcomer belongs fully and eternally to the divine family and the heavenly kingdom.
Revelation 3:13
Verse: He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches
English Explanation
The standard call for spiritual attentiveness concludes the letter to Philadelphia. It urges all readers to take to heart the magnificent rewards of obedience, endurance, and keeping God’s word.
Revelation 3:14
Verse: And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write These things saith the Amen the faithful and true witness the beginning of the creation of God
English Explanation
Christ addresses the final church, Laodicea. He introduces Himself using titles that assert His ultimate authority: “The Amen” (the final word, certainty, and fulfillment of all truth), the “faithful and true witness” (who sees and reports reality perfectly), and the “beginning of the creation of God” (meaning the Source, Ruler, and Creator of all things, not a created being).
Revelation 3:15
Verse: I know thy works that thou art neither cold nor hot I would thou wert cold or hot
English Explanation
Christ diagnoses the severe spiritual condition of the Laodicean church: lukewarmness. They were neither “cold” (openly rejecting God or completely indifferent) nor “hot” (fervent, passionate, and active for the Gospel). Their spiritual apathy, driven by material wealth and self-sufficiency, was repulsive to Christ. He expresses a desire for them to be either decisively cold or passionately hot, rather than occupying a hypocritical middle ground.
