English Explanation

1. “But the other of love”

The expression “the other of love” refers to those who preached Christ with genuine love. Their motivation was different from the people described in the preceding verse, who preached Christ from envy and strife.

This distinction is important because the same outward activity can come from very different motives. Two people may proclaim the same message, yet their hearts may be motivated by completely different purposes.

Those who preached “of love” cared about Christ, the Gospel, and the work Paul had been called to accomplish. Their ministry was not about gaining personal attention or competing with Paul. Instead, they wanted to support the Gospel and strengthen the work of Christian ministry.

For believers today, this provides a valuable principle: our motives matter to God.

A person may perform a good action but have an unhealthy motive. Christian service should therefore be accompanied by humility, love, sincerity, and a desire to honor God.

2. “Knowing that I am set”

Paul says that these believers understood that he was “set” for a particular purpose.

The word conveys the idea of being appointed, established, or placed in a particular position. Paul did not see his imprisonment as proof that his ministry had failed. Instead, he understood that his circumstances were connected with his calling.

Paul had been called to proclaim Christ, and even his suffering became part of the circumstances in which he carried out that calling.

This is a powerful reminder that difficult circumstances do not necessarily mean that a person has been abandoned by God. Sometimes a difficult season can become an opportunity for faithfulness.

Paul’s imprisonment could have caused him to become discouraged, bitter, or silent. Instead, he continued to speak about Christ.

3. “For the defence”

The word “defence” points to the idea of defending or giving an answer concerning the Gospel.

Paul understood that the Christian message would face questions, opposition, criticism, and misunderstanding. He was prepared to explain and defend the truth he had received.

This does not mean that Christians are called to argue angrily with everyone who disagrees with them. Biblical defense of the faith should be carried out with truth, wisdom, humility, and love.

A faithful defense of the Gospel involves knowing what we believe and being able to explain why we believe it.

Paul’s example teaches Christians that faith and understanding belong together. Believers should not be ashamed of the Gospel, but they should also communicate it responsibly and respectfully.

4. “Of the gospel”

The central subject of Paul’s calling was the Gospel.

The Gospel is the good news concerning Jesus Christ—His life, death, resurrection, and the salvation offered through Him. Paul devoted his ministry to proclaiming this message.

His purpose was not simply to defend his personal reputation. His greater concern was the truth of the Gospel.

This distinction is significant. Christians can become overly concerned about defending themselves, their reputation, or their personal opinions. Paul demonstrates a different priority: the Gospel deserved faithful proclamation even when the messenger suffered.

5. The importance of sincere Christian service

Philippians 1:17 encourages Christians to examine the motives behind their service.

Why do we teach?
Why do we preach?
Why do we serve others?
Why do we share Scripture?

Christian service should flow from love rather than jealousy, pride, competition, or the desire for recognition.

The people Paul describes positively were motivated by love. They understood his calling and supported the Gospel rather than competing for personal status.

This is particularly relevant for churches and Christian ministries. Different believers may have different gifts, responsibilities, and methods of service. These differences should not automatically become reasons for rivalry.

When Christ is the center, believers can work together with humility.

Lessons from Philippians 1:17

1. Motives are important

God is concerned not only with what we do but also with why we do it. A good ministry should be accompanied by a sincere heart.

2. Difficult circumstances do not cancel God’s purpose

Paul was imprisoned, yet he continued to fulfill his calling. His circumstances did not prevent him from serving God.

3. The Gospel deserves faithful defense

Christians should know the Gospel and be prepared to explain it accurately and respectfully.

4. Christian ministry should be motivated by love

Love produces a different kind of ministry. It seeks the good of others rather than personal recognition.

5. Personal suffering can become an opportunity

Paul’s imprisonment became part of his testimony. His circumstances gave him opportunities to demonstrate faithfulness and proclaim Christ.

6. Avoid competition in Christian service

The ministry of Christ is not supposed to become a competition for popularity. Believers should rejoice when the Gospel is faithfully proclaimed and should seek unity rather than rivalry.

Urdu Explanation —
