Detailed Explanation in English

“Who, being in the form of God”

The opening phrase describes Jesus Christ as being “in the form of God.” The word “form” is important because Paul is not merely saying that Jesus looked like God from the outside. The statement points to His true status and nature.

In the context of Philippians 2, Christ’s position is contrasted with His later willingness to become a servant. He possessed divine glory, yet He willingly humbled Himself.

The verse therefore presents Christ as existing in a condition of divine dignity before His humiliation. The following verse says that He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant.” The contrast is striking:

  • He was in the form of God.
  • He took the form of a servant.
  • He was highly exalted.
  • He willingly humbled Himself.

The passage does not portray humility as weakness. Instead, it presents humility as a deliberate expression of love and obedience.

“Thought it not robbery to be equal with God”

The phrase “thought it not robbery” can sound unusual to modern readers. In the older language of the King James Version, the idea concerns something being regarded as an act of robbery or something to be grasped selfishly.

Paul’s point is that Christ did not regard equality with God as something that had to be selfishly seized or used for His own advantage. He did not cling to His exalted position in a self-centered manner.

Instead, Christ willingly chose the path of humility.

This becomes clearer when the verse is read together with Philippians 2:7–8. Paul continues by saying that Christ:

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”

Then Paul describes Christ’s obedience even unto death, specifically the death of the cross.

Therefore, Philippians 2:6 should not be separated from the verses that follow. The central message is not merely Christ’s exalted position but the remarkable humility He demonstrated.

Equality with God and Christ’s humility

The verse establishes a profound theological contrast. Christ was associated with divine glory, yet He willingly entered human existence and accepted the position of a servant.

Christian teaching understands this passage as affirming the divine identity of Jesus Christ while simultaneously emphasizing His genuine humanity.

This truth is also connected with the opening of John’s Gospel, where Jesus Christ is presented as the Word who was with God and was God, and who became flesh.

Philippians 2:6–8 therefore helps Christians understand the mystery of Christ’s incarnation: the One presented in divine glory willingly entered the human condition and accepted suffering and death.

The example of Christ’s humility

Paul’s purpose in writing these words was also practical. Philippians 2:5 introduces the section by saying:

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”

Paul was teaching believers to develop an attitude like Christ’s.

The Christian life should not be dominated by pride, competition, selfish ambition, or the desire for personal recognition. Instead, believers are called to demonstrate humility, service, love, and concern for others.

Philippians 2:3–4 gives the immediate context: believers are instructed not to act through selfish ambition or empty pride but to consider others and their interests.

Christ becomes the supreme example of this principle.

Christ’s voluntary humility

One of the most important lessons from Philippians 2:6 is that Christ’s humility was voluntary.

He did not humble Himself because He lacked worth. He humbled Himself despite His exalted position.

This distinction is important. Biblical humility does not mean believing that a person has no value. Rather, humility means refusing to make one’s own status, rights, or interests the center of everything.

Christ’s example demonstrates that true greatness can be expressed through service.

He possessed glory, yet He served.

He possessed authority, yet He obeyed.

He was exalted, yet He humbled Himself.

He ultimately went to the cross.

The connection with the cross

Philippians 2:6 reaches its full significance when connected with verses 7 and 8. The passage moves from Christ’s divine status to His incarnation, servanthood, obedience, and death.

The cross represents the deepest expression of His self-giving love.

Paul’s argument is essentially this: if Christ was willing to humble Himself so profoundly for others, Christians should not live as though personal status and recognition are their highest priorities.

The verse therefore has both doctrinal and practical importance.

Doctrinally, it speaks about Christ’s identity.

Practically, it teaches believers how to live.

What Philippians 2:6 teaches Christians today

This verse offers several important lessons.

1. Christ is presented as divine

The verse places Christ in relation to God in a uniquely exalted way. His equality with God is central to the passage.

2. Christ’s humility was deliberate

He willingly accepted the role of a servant. His humility was not accidental or forced.

3. True greatness is not selfish

Christ did not use His exalted position for selfish advantage. His example challenges believers to use their abilities and positions for service.

4. Christians are called to imitate Christ

Paul does not present Christ merely as someone to admire. He presents Christ as the pattern for Christian behavior.

5. Humility should influence relationships

The surrounding verses speak directly about how believers should treat one another. Christian humility should appear in everyday relationships, families, churches, communities, and workplaces.

Philippians 2:6 Explanation in Urdu

“Who, being in the form of God”

“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.”

“Thought it not robbery to be equal with God”

“Let this mind be in you”

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
