English Explanation
Titus 1:9 gives an important description of the character and responsibility of a church leader. Paul is explaining to Titus what qualities should be found in those who serve as overseers or elders in the church. The verse emphasizes three connected responsibilities: holding firmly to God’s faithful Word, teaching sound doctrine, and responding wisely to those who oppose the truth.
1. “Holding fast the faithful word”
The phrase “holding fast” means to remain firmly committed to something and not let it go. Paul teaches that a spiritual leader must hold firmly to the faithful Word. The Word of God is not something that should be changed simply because culture, personal opinions, or circumstances change.
The expression “faithful word” points to the trustworthy message that has been taught to believers. Christian teaching is grounded in the truth revealed through Scripture and the gospel of Jesus Christ. A church leader therefore needs a strong foundation in God’s Word.
Holding fast also involves personal faithfulness. It is possible for someone to speak about Scripture publicly while failing to live according to its teaching privately. Titus 1:9 connects doctrine with character. A faithful teacher should not merely know biblical truth but should remain committed to it.
This principle is valuable for every Christian. Believers can face pressure to compromise their convictions. Friends, society, popular opinions, or changing cultural expectations may challenge biblical teaching. The verse encourages Christians to remain rooted in God’s faithful Word.
2. “As he hath been taught”
Paul continues by saying that the faithful Word is to be held “as he hath been taught.” This emphasizes receiving and preserving the sound teaching handed down within the Christian faith.
A spiritual leader should not invent a completely new message. He is responsible for faithfully teaching what he has received from the apostolic Christian tradition. This requires humility because the teacher is a servant of the truth rather than its creator.
Learning is therefore essential to Christian ministry. A person cannot effectively teach what he has never carefully learned. Study, understanding, prayer, and obedience all contribute to faithful ministry.
This phrase also reminds us that Christian maturity develops through instruction. People need to learn Scripture accurately before they can explain it to others. Good teaching requires patience, careful study, and a willingness to remain faithful to the meaning of God’s Word.
3. “That he may be able by sound doctrine”
The purpose of holding firmly to the faithful Word is practical. Paul says that the leader should be able to teach “sound doctrine.”
The word “sound” carries the idea of something healthy, reliable, and spiritually beneficial. Sound doctrine produces spiritual health because it directs people toward truth and faithful living.
Biblical teaching should therefore do more than provide information. It should shape the heart, character, choices, relationships, and conduct of believers.
A church leader needs enough understanding of Scripture to distinguish truth from error. Without sound doctrine, believers can easily become confused by teachings that appear religious but do not agree with Scripture.
Sound doctrine also protects the church. When people understand biblical truth, they are better prepared to recognize false teaching and avoid spiritual confusion.
4. “Both to exhort”
Paul says that sound doctrine enables a leader “to exhort.” To exhort means to encourage, urge, strengthen, or call someone toward faithful action.
Biblical teaching should therefore be encouraging as well as instructive. People need reminders to trust God, follow Christ, forgive others, love their neighbors, remain faithful, and live according to Scripture.
Exhortation does not necessarily mean harsh criticism. A faithful teacher can encourage people with compassion while still speaking honestly about what Scripture teaches.
There are times when believers become discouraged, spiritually tired, or uncertain. Sound biblical teaching can strengthen them and remind them of God’s promises.
5. “And to convince the gainsayers”
The final part of the verse concerns those who oppose sound teaching. The word “gainsayers” refers to people who contradict, oppose, or speak against the truth being taught.
Paul says that a qualified leader should be able to respond to such opposition. This does not mean that Christian leaders should constantly argue with everyone. Rather, they should understand Scripture well enough to explain and defend the truth when it is challenged.
This requires knowledge, wisdom, patience, and self-control. A person may possess biblical knowledge but still respond badly to disagreement. Titus 1:9 presents a better model: hold firmly to the faithful Word and use sound doctrine to encourage believers and answer opposition.
The goal is not to win arguments merely for personal pride. The purpose is to protect the church, preserve biblical truth, and help people understand what Scripture teaches.
The Main Message of Titus 1:9
Titus 1:9 teaches that faithful Christian leadership requires both conviction and compassion.
A leader must have conviction because he is instructed to hold firmly to the faithful Word. At the same time, he needs compassion because he is called to exhort and encourage others.
The verse also demonstrates the relationship between belief and ministry. What a leader believes affects what he teaches, and what he teaches affects the spiritual health of those who listen.
For this reason, Christian ministry should never be built merely upon personality, popularity, eloquence, or human opinion. Its foundation should be the faithful Word of God and sound doctrine.
Practical Lessons for Christians
Remain rooted in Scripture
Christians should regularly read and study the Bible. Familiarity with God’s Word helps believers develop spiritual discernment.
Do not compromise biblical truth
Holding fast means remaining faithful even when doing so is difficult. Christians should not abandon biblical convictions simply because those convictions become unpopular.
Learn before teaching
Titus 1:9 reminds teachers that they must first be taught. Careful learning is essential before confidently explaining Scripture to others.
Use truth to encourage people
Biblical truth should not be used merely to criticize. Sound doctrine can strengthen people, correct them, encourage them, and guide them toward faithful living.
Respond to opposition wisely
When someone challenges Christian teaching, believers should respond with truth, patience, humility, and love. Anger and personal attacks do not strengthen biblical testimony.
Connect doctrine with life
True Christian teaching should influence everyday conduct. What we believe about God should affect how we speak, work, forgive, serve, and treat other people.
Titus 1:9 — اردو میں تفصیلی وضاحت
آیت — ططس 1:9 (KJV):
“Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”
“Holding fast the faithful word” —
“As he hath been taught” —
“By sound doctrine” — صحیح اور صحت مند تعلیم
“Sound doctrine”
“To convince the gainsayers” —
