English Explanation

Revelation 3:22 is the concluding statement of the messages to the seven churches in the Book of Revelation. The verse is short, but it carries a powerful spiritual invitation: every person who is willing to listen is called to hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

The words, “He that hath an ear”, are not simply referring to physical hearing. Almost everyone has physical ears, but Scripture frequently uses hearing as a picture of spiritual attentiveness and obedience. A person may hear words with the ears but fail to understand their meaning or respond to them. This verse calls the reader to listen with an open and responsive heart.

The phrase “let him hear” is an invitation rather than merely a statement. It suggests that God’s message should not be treated as ordinary information. The message requires attention, reflection, and response. Biblical hearing involves more than recognizing words; it involves allowing God’s truth to influence one’s life.

The verse then says, “what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” This is especially important because the message is directed to the churches. Throughout Revelation chapters 2 and 3, Christ addresses seven churches and speaks about their spiritual conditions. Some are praised for faithfulness, while others are warned about compromise, spiritual weakness, false teaching, or becoming spiritually lukewarm.

The repeated expression, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches,” shows that these messages were not limited to the original congregations. They contain lessons for believers and churches who read them afterward. The churches of Revelation represent real communities in their historical setting, but their spiritual warnings and encouragements also invite continuing reflection.

A Call to Spiritual Listening

One of the central lessons of Revelation 3:22 is the importance of spiritual listening. Modern life is filled with competing voices. People hear opinions from society, media, friends, institutions, and countless other sources. In the middle of these voices, Scripture calls believers to pay attention to what the Spirit says.

Spiritual listening requires humility. A person who assumes that he already knows everything has little willingness to receive correction. The messages to the churches demonstrate that even a congregation can become comfortable while serious spiritual problems remain unnoticed.

The verse therefore encourages self-examination. Instead of asking only what others need to change, believers can ask: What is the Spirit teaching me? Where do I need correction? Where should I become more faithful? What truth have I neglected?

The Message Is for the Churches

The plural word “churches” is significant. The message is not addressed only to isolated individuals. Christian communities also have responsibilities. Churches are called to remain faithful to Christ, preserve truth, encourage believers, resist spiritual compromise, and maintain genuine devotion.

Revelation 3 contains the famous message to the church at Laodicea. That church described itself as rich and needing nothing, while Christ exposed a very different spiritual condition. The final invitation to hear what the Spirit says provides an important lesson: outward appearance does not necessarily reveal inward spiritual reality.

A church may have activity, organization, resources, or reputation while still needing spiritual renewal. The appropriate response is not despair but attentive listening and obedience.

Hearing Should Lead to Response

Throughout Scripture, hearing and doing are closely connected. If someone hears a warning but refuses to act, the hearing has not produced its intended result.

Revelation 3:22 therefore challenges believers to move beyond passive religious knowledge. Reading Scripture is important, but the message becomes personally meaningful when it shapes conduct, priorities, relationships, worship, and faithfulness.

The verse invites readers to consider whether they are truly listening. Sometimes the answer to a spiritual problem is not that God has stopped speaking, but that people have stopped paying attention.

Encouragement for Believers

This verse is also encouraging. The Spirit continues to speak to the churches. The invitation to hear demonstrates that God’s message is intended to be received.

For someone who feels spiritually distant, Revelation 3:22 can become an invitation to return to attentive faith. For someone experiencing spiritual growth, it is a reminder to remain humble and teachable. For a church community, it is a call to examine its faithfulness and listen carefully to biblical truth.

The verse does not say merely, “Hear what the Spirit said.” It says, “what the Spirit saith.” This language emphasizes the continuing relevance of the message. Scripture continues to confront, encourage, teach, and guide those who approach it with sincerity.

Main Spiritual Lessons

Revelation 3:22 teaches several important principles:

  1. Spiritual hearing requires attention. We should not treat God’s Word as ordinary information.
  2. Hearing requires humility. We must be willing to receive correction as well as encouragement.
  3. The message applies to churches. Christian communities must continually examine their faithfulness.
  4. True hearing should produce action. Biblical understanding should influence daily life.
  5. Christ’s message deserves a response. The reader is invited to listen rather than remain indifferent.
  6. Spiritual examination is valuable. We should regularly consider whether our lives reflect the faith we profess.
  7. God’s truth remains relevant. The message to the churches continues to provide spiritual instruction for readers today.

Revelation 3:22 is therefore a fitting conclusion to the seven messages of Revelation 2–3. It leaves the reader with a personal question: Am I willing to hear what the Spirit says?

The verse reminds us that spiritual growth begins with a willingness to listen. A receptive heart can recognize correction, receive encouragement, and respond faithfully to God’s truth. The call is simple but profound: “He that hath an ear, let him hear.”
