Detailed Explanation in English
1. “Thou art worthy, O Lord”
The verse begins with the words, “Thou art worthy, O Lord.” This is a statement of recognition and worship. The heavenly elders are not simply offering praise because they are commanded to do so; they are declaring that the Lord is genuinely worthy of worship.
The word “worthy” expresses value, honor, and deservingness. God deserves worship because of who He is and because of what He has done. His authority does not come from human approval. His greatness does not depend upon the opinions of people. He is worthy because He is the Creator and sovereign Lord.
In Revelation 4, John sees a throne in heaven surrounded by worship. The scene reminds believers that earthly circumstances do not change God’s authority. Even when the world appears confused or troubled, God remains seated upon His throne.
The phrase “O Lord” directs attention to God’s supreme authority. He is not merely one ruler among many. He is the Lord over creation.
2. “To receive glory”
The elders declare that God is worthy “to receive glory.”
Glory refers to God’s greatness, majesty, excellence, and divine honor being recognized. God does not become more glorious because human beings praise Him. Rather, worship acknowledges the glory that already belongs to Him.
People can easily give glory to wealth, success, power, intelligence, famous individuals, or earthly achievements. Revelation 4:11 redirects our attention toward God. Everything that is impressive in creation ultimately points beyond itself to the Creator.
When believers give glory to God, they acknowledge that their abilities, opportunities, possessions, and lives ultimately exist under His authority.
3. “And honour”
The verse also says that God is worthy to receive “honour.”
Honor means treating someone with appropriate respect and recognition. God deserves the highest honor because He is the Creator and Lord.
This has practical consequences for Christian living. Worship is not limited to singing or attending a religious gathering. A person can honor God through honesty, kindness, obedience, humility, service, prayer, and faithful living.
When believers recognize God’s authority, they seek to live in a way that reflects respect for Him.
4. “And power”
The elders continue by declaring that God is worthy to receive “power.”
The word points to authority, might, and sovereign rule. God possesses ultimate authority over creation. Human rulers may have authority for a limited period, but God’s authority is eternal.
This message would have been especially meaningful to the early Christians living in a world dominated by powerful political and military authorities. Revelation reminds God’s people that earthly power is temporary, while God’s sovereignty is everlasting.
The Lord does not need to compete for ultimate authority. He is already sovereign.
5. “For thou hast created all things”
The verse then gives the reason for this worship:
“For thou hast created all things.”
Creation is the foundation of the elders’ declaration. God deserves glory, honor, and power because He created all things.
The universe, the earth, living creatures, humanity, and everything that exists ultimately depend upon God as Creator. Creation points toward God’s wisdom, power, order, and purpose.
This statement also establishes a distinction between the Creator and His creation. Creation itself should not receive the worship that belongs to the Creator.
For Christians, this truth provides a foundation for understanding human dignity. Every human being exists because God is the Creator. Human life therefore has value and purpose.
6. “And for thy pleasure they are”
The next phrase says:
“And for thy pleasure they are.”
This does not mean that creation exists merely for God’s entertainment. Rather, the expression communicates God’s will, purpose, delight, and good intention.
Creation exists according to God’s purpose. The world is not presented as an ultimately meaningless accident. God has a purpose for what He has created.
This truth can encourage believers during difficult seasons. A person may sometimes wonder about the purpose of life, especially when facing suffering, disappointment, or uncertainty. Revelation 4:11 points back to the Creator: our existence ultimately belongs within God’s purpose.
7. “And were created”
The final words are:
“And were created.”
The verse emphasizes both the existence of creation and its origin. Everything created has its beginning in God’s creative will.
The statement also gives believers a reason for humility. Human beings can discover, develop, build, and accomplish remarkable things, but they do not replace the Creator. Every ability ultimately exists within the created order.
Instead of taking ultimate credit for everything, believers are encouraged to recognize God as the source and sustainer of creation.
What Revelation 4:11 Teaches Christians Today
God deserves first place
The central lesson is that God deserves the highest place in our lives. When God becomes the center of our thinking, our priorities begin to change.
Life has purpose
The verse teaches that creation exists according to God’s purpose. This gives Christian faith a strong foundation for understanding the meaning of life.
Worship is a response to God’s character
The elders worship because they recognize who God is. True worship is therefore not simply an emotional experience. It is a response to God’s greatness, authority, and creative power.
Human beings should practice humility
Everything we have ultimately exists within God’s creation. Our talents, opportunities, relationships, and accomplishments should lead us toward gratitude rather than pride.
God remains sovereign
Revelation 4 presents God on His throne. This is an important reminder that God’s authority does not disappear when circumstances become difficult. Earthly events may be confusing, but God’s sovereignty remains.
