Detailed English Explanation
“Even as Sara obeyed Abraham”
Peter points back to Sarah (Sara), the wife of Abraham, whose life is recorded in the book of Genesis. He presents her as an example of a woman who demonstrated trust and respect within her marriage.
The word “obeyed” should not be understood as teaching that a woman has no voice, dignity, judgment, or responsibility before God. Scripture consistently presents people as morally responsible before God. Christian marriage is not intended to be a relationship of oppression or fear. Rather, Peter is describing a pattern of respectful conduct and faithfulness.
Sarah lived in a difficult and uncertain period. Abraham was called to leave his homeland and journey according to God’s direction. Their life involved uncertainty, travel, waiting, and difficult circumstances. Sarah participated in that journey and shared in the challenges of Abraham’s calling.
Her example therefore includes faithfulness during uncertainty.
“Calling him lord”
Peter mentions that Sarah called Abraham “lord.” This reflects a respectful form of address and illustrates the honor she showed toward her husband.
The important lesson is not that every Christian wife must use the literal word “lord” when speaking to her husband. The deeper principle is respect.
Christian marriage should not be characterized by humiliation, insults, manipulation, or contempt. Both husband and wife possess dignity as people created by God. Respect helps create an environment in which love, trust, communication, and spiritual growth can flourish.
This verse should also be read alongside the broader teaching of the New Testament concerning husbands. In Ephesians 5, husbands are instructed to love their wives sacrificially. Therefore, Peter’s teaching should never be used as an excuse for controlling or mistreating a wife.
“Whose daughters ye are”
Peter then gives the readers a spiritual connection with Sarah:
“Whose daughters ye are…”
The phrase means that women who follow Sarah’s faithful example can be considered her spiritual daughters.
This is an important principle. Biblical spiritual heritage is not merely about physical ancestry. A person demonstrates connection with faithful people by following the same kind of faith and conduct.
Sarah is remembered because of her relationship with Abraham, but more importantly, her story is connected with God’s promises and purposes. Women who demonstrate faith, goodness, courage, and respectful conduct are presented as following her example.
This means that Christian identity is expressed through character and faith, not merely through outward appearance or social status.
“As long as ye do well”
Peter places a practical condition on this spiritual comparison:
“As long as ye do well…”
Christian faith should produce good conduct.
Peter is not teaching that salvation is earned by good works. Rather, genuine faith should influence the way a person lives. A believer’s character should increasingly reflect goodness, integrity, kindness, self-control, faithfulness, and love.
Doing well includes treating others with dignity, maintaining a faithful heart, making wise decisions, and remaining committed to what is right even when circumstances are difficult.
This is particularly important because Peter was writing to Christians who faced pressures and difficulties. His message is that believers should not abandon godly character simply because their circumstances are challenging.
“And are not afraid with any amazement”
The final part of the verse is especially meaningful:
“And are not afraid with any amazement.”
The word “amazement” in this context carries the idea of terror, alarm, or something frightening. Peter encourages Christian women not to allow fear to control them.
This does not mean that Christians will never experience fear. Fear is a normal human emotion. The biblical instruction is not to allow fear to dominate one’s faith and decisions.
A woman may face uncertainty, opposition, difficult circumstances, or pressures from society. Peter encourages her to remain courageous and grounded in God.
True Christian strength is not the absence of difficult circumstances. It is the ability to remain faithful in the middle of difficult circumstances.
Respect without fear
One of the most important distinctions in understanding 1 Peter 3:6 is the difference between respect and fear.
Peter praises Sarah’s respectful relationship with Abraham, but he also tells Christian women not to live in terror. Therefore, this passage should never be interpreted as permission for abuse, intimidation, or violence.
A healthy Christian marriage should include love, respect, responsibility, communication, and mutual care. Respect does not require a person to tolerate wrongdoing or remain silent about serious harm.
The final words of the verse remind believers that Christian character includes courage. Faith should make a person stronger in doing what is right, not trapped in constant fear.
Spiritual Lessons from 1 Peter 3:6
1. Faith should influence relationships
Sarah’s faith was demonstrated not only through religious words but also through her conduct. Our relationship with God should affect the way we treat the people closest to us.
2. Respect has value in marriage
Respect is an important part of a healthy marriage. Husbands and wives should speak to one another with dignity rather than contempt.
3. God values inner character
The surrounding passage emphasizes that spiritual beauty is not primarily dependent upon clothing, jewelry, hairstyle, or outward appearance. God looks at the heart and character.
4. Christian women are called to courage
Peter’s instruction not to be afraid is significant. Christian faith should produce courage when circumstances become frightening.
5. Good conduct gives credibility to faith
Peter connects the example of Sarah with doing what is good. Christian belief should be visible through consistent and honorable behavior.
6. Biblical submission should never be confused with abuse
The verse describes respect within marriage, but it does not authorize cruelty, violence, manipulation, or oppression. Christian leadership must be understood in harmony with the biblical command for husbands to love sacrificially and treat their wives with honor.
“Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.”
“Even as Sara obeyed Abraham”
“Calling him lord”
“Whose daughters ye are”
“As long as ye do well”
“As long as ye do well”
“And are not afraid with any amazement”
