Part 1: Comprehensive English Commentary

1. Context and Biblical Background

In his second letter to the church at Corinth, the Apostle Paul addresses the core message of the Gospel: reconciliation between humanity and God. Chapter 5 culminates in a powerful declaration of how God accomplishes this restored relationship. Verse 21 functions as the cornerstone of apostolic gospel preaching, offering a concise summary of salvation history and the mechanism of redemption.

2. Verse Breakdown and Analysis

“For he hath made him…”

The supreme actor in this divine plan is God the Father. Salvation is not an afterthought or human invention; it originates in the eternal grace and love of God. God initiated the redemptive process by sending His Son to fulfill the demands of divine holiness and justice.

“…to be sin for us, who knew no sin;”

Jesus Christ lived a perfectly sinless life. He possessed complete moral perfection and absolute purity, free from original and actual sin. Yet, on the cross, God treated Him as if He embodied all human transgression. This does not mean Jesus became morally corrupt or personally sinful; rather, He became a substitutionary sin offering. The guilt and penalty of human sin were legally transferred (imputed) to Him so that He bore God’s judgment on our behalf.

“…that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

This clause reveals the divine purpose of Christ’s sacrifice. Humanity, stained by transgression, cannot achieve divine righteousness through self-effort or legalistic obedience. In Christ, believers receive the legal status of absolute righteousness. Just as our sin was imputed to Christ, His flawless righteousness is imputed to those who trust in Him.

3. The Theological Principle: The Great Exchange

Theologians refer to 2 Corinthians 5:21 as “The Great Exchange.” This doctrine rests upon two central truths:

  1. Imputation of Sin: Our guilt, debt, and punishment were placed entirely upon Christ at Calvary.

  2. Imputation of Righteousness: Christ’s obedience, perfection, and righteous standing are credited to the believer’s account before God.

Through this double imputation, justice is satisfied, grace is magnified, and believers are fully reconciled to God.

Part 2: Detailed Urdu Commentary (تفصیلی اردو وضاحت)

(Urdu Translation)

(Context & Background)

(Detailed Explanation in Urdu)

(God Made Him to Be Sin for Us)

(Who Knew No Sin)

(That We Might Be Made the Righteousness of God)

(The Doctrine of the Great Exchange)
