English Explanation of Genesis 11:5-9
The passage of Genesis 11:5-9 describes the event commonly known as the Tower of Babel. It explains how humanity, after the flood, united together with one language and decided to build a great city and tower. Their goal was not only construction but also to make a name for themselves and avoid being scattered across the earth.
The verse begins with the statement that “the LORD came down to see the city and the tower.” This does not mean that God lacked knowledge of what was happening. The Bible often uses human expressions to describe God’s actions in a way people can understand. The phrase shows that God carefully observes human activities and judges actions according to His wisdom and justice.
The people of Babel had unity, ability, and ambition. Their shared language allowed them to cooperate easily and accomplish large projects. However, their problem was not their intelligence, creativity, or unity itself. The issue was their pride and desire to establish their greatness independently from God.
The people said, “Let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name.” Their desire was to create lasting fame and security through their own power. Instead of honoring God, they focused on human achievement and self-glory.
When God said, “Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language,” it describes God’s decision to stop their proud plan. The confusion of languages caused communication problems among the people. Because they could no longer understand one another, their cooperation ended, and they spread throughout the earth.
The name Babel became associated with confusion because God confused the language of humanity there. This event explains, within the biblical account, why different nations and languages exist among people.
The story teaches several important lessons:
1. Human Pride Has Limits
The Tower of Babel reminds people that human achievements, no matter how impressive, cannot replace dependence on God. Knowledge, technology, and strength are valuable, but pride can lead people away from wisdom.
2. Unity Requires the Right Purpose
The people of Babel were united, but their purpose was centered on personal glory. Unity is powerful when it is guided by humility, justice, and respect for God.
3. God Sees Human Actions
The passage shows that God is aware of human decisions. Nothing done by individuals or societies is hidden from His understanding.
4. God’s Plan Continues Despite Human Rebellion
Although the people tried to remain together in one place, God’s purpose for humanity was that they would spread across the earth. The confusion of languages became part of the unfolding biblical story.

پیدائش کی کتاب باب 11 آیات 5 سے 9 میں برجِ بابل (Tower of Babel) کا واقعہ بیان کیا گیا ہے۔ اس واقعہ میں بتایا گیا ہے کہ سیلاب کے بعد انسانوں کی ایک نسل ایک زبان بولتی تھی اور سب ایک جگہ جمع ہو کر ایک بڑا شہر اور ایک بلند مینار بنانے کا ارادہ کرتی ہے۔
آیت میں لکھا ہے:
“اور خداوند اس شہر اور اس برج کو دیکھنے کے لیے نیچے آیا جسے بنی آدم بنا رہے تھے۔”
اس کا مطلب یہ نہیں کہ خدا کو پہلے سے علم نہیں تھا کہ انسان کیا کر رہے ہیں۔ بائبل میں بعض اوقات انسانی اندازِ بیان استعمال کیا جاتا ہے تاکہ انسان خدا کے کام کو آسانی سے سمجھ سکیں۔ اس جملے سے ظاہر ہوتا ہے کہ خدا انسانوں کے اعمال کو دیکھتا ہے اور ان کا جائزہ لیتا ہے۔
بابل کے لوگوں کے پاس ایک بڑی طاقت تھی: وہ سب ایک زبان بولتے تھے۔ ایک زبان ہونے کی وجہ سے وہ مل کر بڑے کام کر سکتے تھے۔ لیکن مسئلہ ان کی صلاحیت یا اتحاد نہیں تھا بلکہ ان کا غرور تھا۔
انہوں نے کہا:
“آؤ ہم اپنے لیے ایک شہر اور ایک برج بنائیں اور اپنا نام پیدا کریں۔”
ان کا مقصد خدا کی عظمت ظاہر کرنا نہیں بلکہ اپنی شہرت اور طاقت قائم کرنا تھا۔ وہ اپنی کامیابی کو خدا پر انحصار کے بجائے اپنی قابلیت کا نتیجہ سمجھ رہے تھے۔
جب خدا نے فرمایا:
“آؤ ہم نیچے جائیں اور وہاں ان کی زبان میں اختلاف ڈال دیں تاکہ وہ ایک دوسرے کی بات نہ سمجھ سکیں۔”
تو اس کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ خدا نے ان کے منصوبے کو روکنے کے لیے زبانوں میں فرق پیدا کر دیا۔ جب لوگ ایک دوسرے کی بات نہ سمجھ سکے تو ان کا مشترکہ کام جاری نہ رہ سکا۔
اس کے بعد لوگ مختلف علاقوں میں پھیل گئے اور شہر کی تعمیر مکمل نہ ہو سکی۔ اسی وجہ سے اس جگہ کا نام بابل مشہور ہوا، کیونکہ وہاں زبانوں میں اختلاف پیدا ہوا۔
اس واقعے سے کئی روحانی سبق ملتے ہیں:
1. غرور انسان کو نقصان پہنچا سکتا ہے
انسان کی ترقی اور کامیابیاں اچھی چیزیں ہیں، لیکن جب انسان خود کو خدا سے بڑا سمجھنے لگے تو غرور پیدا ہوتا ہے جو نقصان کا باعث بنتا ہے۔
2. اتحاد کا مقصد اہم ہے
صرف اکٹھا ہونا کافی نہیں، بلکہ مقصد بھی درست ہونا چاہیے۔ اچھا اتحاد وہ ہے جو بھلائی، عاجزی اور خدا کی مرضی کے مطابق ہو۔
3. خدا انسان کے اعمال کو دیکھتا ہے
یہ واقعہ یاد دلاتا ہے کہ خدا انسانوں کے ارادوں اور کاموں سے باخبر ہے۔
4. خدا کا منصوبہ ہمیشہ قائم رہتا ہے
انسان اپنے منصوبے بنا سکتا ہے، لیکن خدا کی حکمت اور مقصد آخرکار قائم رہتے ہیں۔
