English Explanation

The verse from 3 John 1:9 introduces a serious problem that existed in the early church. The Apostle John explains that he had written a message to the church, but a man named Diotrephes rejected John’s authority and refused to welcome him or those who represented the truth.

The name Diotrephes appears only in this passage of Scripture. Although little historical information is available about him, John gives a clear description of his character. The main issue was that Diotrephes “loveth to have the preeminence among them.” This means he desired to be first, to have control, honor, and influence over others. His problem was not simply having a position in the church; the problem was that he loved personal importance more than serving God and caring for others.

True spiritual leadership is based on humility, love, and service. Jesus taught that greatness comes through serving others rather than seeking power or recognition. Diotrephes represents the danger of pride entering spiritual communities. When a person seeks personal authority above truth, unity, and God’s purpose, it can harm the whole church.

John also says that Diotrephes “receiveth us not.” In the early church, receiving God’s messengers was considered an important responsibility. Refusing to welcome John showed rejection of apostolic teaching and resistance to spiritual correction. Diotrephes was not only proud; he was unwilling to accept guidance from someone appointed to teach the truth.

This verse teaches that pride can affect anyone, including people who hold religious positions. A person may appear devoted outwardly but still struggle with a desire for control, praise, or superiority. The Bible repeatedly warns against pride because it separates people from God’s wisdom and creates conflict among believers.

Another important lesson from this verse is the importance of recognizing true authority. Spiritual authority should not be based only on a person’s position, popularity, or influence. It should be connected with faithfulness to God’s Word, love for others, and a humble attitude.

The example of Diotrephes also encourages believers to examine their own hearts. Everyone should ask: Do I seek to serve or to be honored? Do I listen to correction, or do I reject advice because of pride? Do I encourage unity, or do I create division?

John’s message reminds the church that leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege for personal status. A good leader welcomes truth, supports others, and points people toward God rather than toward himself.

The contrast in 3 John is also meaningful. After describing Diotrephes, John later mentions Demetrius as someone who had a good testimony. This comparison shows that believers have a choice: they can follow the path of pride and self-interest, or they can follow the path of faithfulness and good character.

The spiritual lesson of 3 John 1:9 remains relevant today. Churches, communities, and families can be damaged when individuals place personal ambition above love and truth. God desires people who lead with kindness, honesty, humility, and commitment to what is right.
