Detailed Explanation in English

1. “And we know”

The verse begins with “And we know.” John repeatedly uses the idea of knowing throughout his letter. He wants believers to understand that their faith should produce confidence, assurance, and spiritual understanding.

The word “know” points toward certainty. A believer does not need to live continually in confusion about whether God is real or whether a life devoted to Him has meaning. Through faith, obedience, and the truth revealed in Scripture, believers can develop a strong assurance that they belong to God.

This knowledge does not mean that a Christian knows everything. Human beings remain limited in their understanding. Rather, it means that believers can confidently know the fundamental truth concerning their spiritual identity and relationship with God.

2. “That we are of God”

The second important statement is “that we are of God.”

To be “of God” means to belong to Him and to identify with His truth and purposes. It describes a spiritual identity. A believer’s life is no longer supposed to be controlled entirely by the values and desires of the world.

This statement also provides comfort. Christians may face rejection, temptation, suffering, uncertainty, or opposition, but their ultimate identity is not determined by those circumstances. Their identity is connected to God.

Being “of God” also carries a responsibility. If a person belongs to God, that person’s life should increasingly reflect God’s character. Faith should influence conduct, attitudes, relationships, choices, and priorities.

Therefore, 1 John 5:19 is not simply saying, “We belong to God, so nothing matters.” Instead, it encourages believers to live according to the truth they have received.

3. “And the whole world”

John then changes his focus from believers to “the whole world.”

In this context, “the world” does not simply mean the physical planet or every human being without exception. John is describing humanity and the present worldly system in its condition of opposition to God’s righteousness.

The Bible frequently distinguishes between belonging to God and following the sinful values of the world. The world can represent attitudes, systems, desires, and behaviors that reject God’s truth.

This distinction is important. Christians live physically in the world, but they are called not to allow sinful worldly values to become the foundation of their lives.

4. “Lieth in wickedness”

The final phrase is particularly serious: “lieth in wickedness.”

John is describing the spiritual condition of the world. Sin is not merely an occasional problem affecting a small number of people. Wickedness is deeply present in human society.

The phrase can also be understood as describing humanity as being under the influence or domination of wickedness. People naturally encounter temptation, selfishness, dishonesty, hatred, pride, greed, violence, and many other forms of sin.

John’s purpose is not simply to make believers afraid of the world. Rather, he wants them to recognize its spiritual danger.

If believers understand that the world is influenced by wickedness, they can become more careful about the things they accept, imitate, and pursue.

5. The contrast between believers and the world

The power of 1 John 5:19 becomes especially clear when the two parts of the verse are placed together:

“We are of God”
versus
“the whole world lieth in wickedness.”

This is a spiritual contrast.

The believer belongs to God, while the world is characterized by wickedness. John is calling Christians to recognize that they should not blindly follow every value, philosophy, desire, or cultural influence around them.

This does not mean that Christians should hate people or withdraw completely from society. Instead, believers should live among others while remaining faithful to God.

They can show love without approving sin. They can participate in society without allowing society to determine their spiritual values. They can treat people with kindness while remaining committed to biblical truth.

6. A message of assurance

Another important lesson is that this verse is ultimately encouraging.

John does not say, “We are lost because the world is wicked.” He says, “we know that we are of God.”

That comes first.

The presence of evil in the world does not cancel God’s work in the lives of His people. Believers can remain faithful even when their surroundings are spiritually difficult.

This is particularly meaningful during times of fear, social conflict, moral confusion, or personal temptation. A Christian can remember: I belong to God, even though I live in a world where wickedness exists.

7. A call to righteous living

The verse should also encourage self-examination.

If we say that we are “of God,” our lives should increasingly demonstrate that identity. Our words, decisions, relationships, treatment of others, use of money, response to temptation, and attitude toward truth should all be considered in light of our relationship with God.

The verse therefore contains both assurance and responsibility.

It assures believers that they belong to God, while also reminding them that the surrounding world is spiritually dangerous. This should motivate Christians to remain close to Scripture, practice righteousness, resist temptation, love others, and maintain their faith.
