Detailed English Explanation

1. “And this have ye done again”

The opening words indicate that this was not an isolated event. The people had continued in a pattern of behavior that was displeasing to God. They were repeating actions that demonstrated a deeper spiritual problem.

The word “again” is significant because repeated wrongdoing can become a habit. A person may continue religious activities while refusing to deal honestly with the behavior that God has commanded him or her to change.

This teaches an important principle: genuine repentance is more than feeling sorry after the consequences of sin appear. True repentance involves turning away from wrong behavior and returning to faithful obedience to God.

2. “Covering the altar of the LORD with tears”

This is a vivid expression. The altar represented worship and the offering of sacrifices to God. The people were crying at the altar, apparently seeking God’s intervention and blessing.

Their tears were real, but tears by themselves did not make their worship acceptable. The verse demonstrates that emotional sorrow is not necessarily the same thing as genuine repentance.

A person may experience deep sadness, regret, fear, or disappointment, yet still fail to correct the conduct that caused the problem. God looks beyond outward emotion and considers the heart and the life of the person who worships Him.

3. “With weeping, and with crying out”

The repetition of tears, weeping, and crying out emphasizes the intensity of their distress. They were not approaching the altar casually. They were deeply troubled and desperately seeking God’s response.

However, their distress did not automatically result in acceptance of their offerings. This is an important lesson about prayer and worship. God does not merely evaluate the intensity of a person’s emotions. He desires sincerity, faithfulness, humility, and obedience.

The passage therefore encourages believers to examine the reasons behind their prayers. Instead of asking only, “Why is God not answering me?” a person should also ask, “Is there something in my life that I need to confess, correct, or surrender to God?”

4. “Insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more”

The verse says that God no longer regarded their offering. This does not mean that an offering was inherently worthless. Rather, the condition and conduct of the worshipper mattered.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly emphasizes that outward religious actions are not a substitute for righteousness. Worship becomes empty when a person attempts to honor God publicly while deliberately disregarding His commands privately.

This principle remains highly relevant today. Attending religious services, giving money, praying, singing, or performing other religious activities cannot be used as a replacement for integrity and obedience.

5. “Or receiveth it with good will at your hand”

The final part of the verse describes God’s unwillingness to receive their offering with favor. The issue was therefore not merely the offering itself but the relationship between the worshipper and God.

God desires worship that comes from a sincere heart. He is not impressed merely by religious appearance. He desires people who genuinely seek Him and allow His principles to shape their relationships and decisions.

Malachi 2:13 therefore calls readers to self-examination. When something is wrong in our relationship with God or with other people, the appropriate response is not simply to increase outward religious activity. We should honestly examine our lives, acknowledge wrongdoing, seek forgiveness, and pursue reconciliation where possible.

“And this have ye done again”

“Covering the altar of the LORD with tears”

“With weeping, and with crying out”

“He regardeth not the offering any more”

“Or receiveth it with good will at your hand”
