Explanation in English
Genesis 25:22–23 describes an unusual experience in Rebekah’s pregnancy. She was carrying twins, but instead of experiencing an ordinary pregnancy, she felt an intense struggle within her. The text says that “the children struggled together within her.” This caused Rebekah to seek an explanation from God.
Her question, “If it be so, why am I thus?”, expresses her confusion and distress. She did not understand why such a severe struggle was taking place inside her. Her response is important because it shows that she did not simply ignore what was happening. She went to inquire of the Lord.
God’s answer revealed that the struggle had a deeper significance. He told Rebekah that there were “two nations” in her womb. The unborn twins were not merely two individuals who would eventually become brothers; their descendants would develop into two distinct peoples.
The two sons were Esau and Jacob. Esau became associated with the nation of Edom, while Jacob’s descendants became the people of Israel. Thus, God’s explanation reaches beyond the immediate pregnancy and points toward the future history of two peoples.
The statement “the one people shall be stronger than the other people” indicates that these two nations would have different positions and experiences. Their relationship would be characterized by conflict and differences in strength.
The final statement is especially significant:
“And the elder shall serve the younger.”
In the ancient world, the firstborn son normally enjoyed a position of special privilege and inheritance. Esau, therefore, as the elder twin, would ordinarily be expected to have priority over Jacob. Yet God’s declaration reversed the normal expectation: the elder would serve the younger.
This does not mean that every younger person will automatically become greater than every older person. Rather, within the specific context of Genesis, God was revealing His purpose concerning Jacob and Esau and their descendants.
The passage is also important because it introduces a recurring biblical theme: God’s purposes are not always determined by ordinary human expectations or social customs. Human beings often judge importance according to birth order, wealth, power, status, or position. God, however, can accomplish His purposes in ways that people do not anticipate.
Later in Genesis, Jacob receives the blessing associated with the covenant promise, while Esau becomes the ancestor of Edom. The relationship between the descendants of Jacob and Esau continues to be an important part of the biblical story.
Another important lesson is found in Rebekah’s response. When she experienced something she could not understand, she sought God for an answer. This provides a practical spiritual lesson: confusion does not necessarily mean that God has abandoned a person. Sometimes circumstances are difficult to understand until their larger purpose becomes clearer.
The passage should also be read carefully. It describes God’s foreknowledge and purpose; it is not simply a statement that sibling rivalry is good or that conflict should be encouraged. The struggle between Jacob and Esau eventually becomes complicated by deception, resentment, separation, and reconciliation.
Therefore, Genesis 25:22–23 can be understood on several levels: it describes Rebekah’s unusual pregnancy, announces the future relationship between two peoples, establishes the unexpected position of Jacob, and prepares the reader for major events that follow in Genesis.
At the heart of the passage is the idea that God’s purposes can reach beyond what human beings naturally expect. The elder normally had priority, yet God announced that the elder would serve the younger. The declaration therefore becomes a major turning point in the story of Jacob and Esau.
“And the children struggled together within her…”
“Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels…”
“and the elder shall serve the younger.”
