English Explanation of Genesis 16:6

1. “But Abram said unto Sarai”

The verse begins with Abram responding to Sarai. The previous verse records Sarai’s complaint that Hagar’s attitude toward her had changed after Hagar became pregnant. Sarai believed that the situation had become a source of conflict and asked Abram to recognize the wrong she believed had occurred.

Abram’s response is significant because he does not appear to take direct control of Hagar’s treatment. Instead, he tells Sarai that Hagar is in her hand. In the social structure represented in this ancient narrative, Sarai had authority over Hagar as her maidservant.

2. “Behold, thy maid is in thine hand”

The expression “in thine hand” indicates authority or control. Abram is essentially acknowledging Sarai’s position over Hagar within the household.

The phrase should not be understood as saying that Hagar had no value as a human being. Rather, it describes the household relationship and authority structure of the ancient world. Modern readers should also recognize that the biblical narrative is describing a historical situation involving servitude, family conflict, pregnancy, and unequal power.

This part of the verse also demonstrates how difficult circumstances can become when people try to solve a problem through human arrangements rather than waiting patiently for God’s direction. Genesis 16 begins with Sarai’s inability to have children and her decision to use Hagar as a means of producing offspring. The resulting situation becomes increasingly painful for everyone involved.

3. “Do to her as it pleaseth thee”

Abram gives Sarai permission to deal with Hagar according to her judgment. The wording reflects the authority Sarai possessed over her maid.

However, this statement should not be interpreted as a general moral command that people may mistreat those under their authority. The next part of the verse specifically tells us what happened: “Sarai dealt hardly with her.”

The narrative therefore records an act of harsh treatment rather than presenting cruelty as an ideal. This distinction is important when studying difficult passages of Scripture. A biblical narrative may describe what people did without necessarily presenting every action as something readers should imitate.

4. “And when Sarai dealt hardly with her”

The phrase “dealt hardly” describes severe or harsh treatment. Other English translations use expressions such as “mistreated,” “treated harshly,” or “afflicted” to communicate the sense of the Hebrew wording.

Sarai’s jealousy, pain, and frustration had developed into mistreatment of Hagar. The circumstances were complicated: Sarai had originally offered Hagar to Abram as a solution to her childlessness, but after Hagar conceived, the relationship between the two women deteriorated.

This teaches an important lesson about resentment. When unresolved pain is allowed to grow, it can affect how a person treats someone else. Sarai’s suffering was real, but the resulting harsh treatment of Hagar created another layer of suffering.

5. “She fled from her face”

The final phrase tells us that Hagar ran away from Sarai. Hagar was no longer able or willing to remain under the treatment she was receiving.

This moment is important because the story does not end with Hagar’s disappearance. In the following verses, Hagar encounters the Angel of the Lord in the wilderness. She is addressed personally, asked where she has come from and where she is going, and receives a message concerning her future child.

Genesis 16 therefore moves from human conflict to God’s awareness of the suffering of an individual who appears vulnerable and displaced.

The larger passage gives Hagar’s son the name Ishmael, explaining the name in connection with God hearing her affliction. Hagar subsequently recognizes God as the One who sees her.

Main Lessons from Genesis 16:6

Genesis 16:6 contains several themes that remain meaningful for readers today.

First, human decisions can have complicated consequences. Sarai attempted to resolve her childlessness through Hagar, but the arrangement produced jealousy, conflict, and suffering.

Second, power must be handled carefully. Sarai had authority over Hagar, but the exercise of authority became harsh. Having power over another person does not make cruelty right.

Third, personal pain does not justify mistreating another person. Sarai’s frustration and emotional suffering were genuine, but Hagar also became a victim of the resulting conflict.

Fourth, the story reminds readers that God sees people who are suffering. Hagar’s story continues beyond her flight. The following verses show that she was not forgotten in the wilderness.

Finally, Genesis 16:6 should be read in its larger context. Isolating one sentence can make the verse appear to approve of harsh treatment. Reading the surrounding verses reveals a much more complex account involving human weakness, family conflict, suffering, and God’s subsequent care for Hagar.

“But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.”
